Unlike an Indonesian trip in the 70's, I hope to not find myself between the protestors and the police.

And unlike some other posts, this hopefully will not stimulate political comment -- though it begs for same.

Strikes were a one day event.

Riots? As a resident of Paris for the last 35 years, how could this have been hidden from me? And I live just 1 km from the neighborhood where a few incidents occurred. Next thing you know, they'll be telling us that bankers have stolen all of our money.

Hmmmmmmmmm,

85000 people protest peacefully in Paris.

3,000,000 people all over France demostrate peacefully.

Some gangs decide to go on a rampage that night, and we are supposed to think that that means something other than a bunch of punks hoping to steal something.

I think that the Paris police deserve some applause for having arrested as many as they did.

Double hmmmm....

My daughter is studying in Paris right now. She saw the strike firsthand, and remarked on how orderly and peaceful it was. Too bad that it had to be marred by gang violence, but if it was, I also applaud the French police for trying to arrest those involved.
