Juliet Binoche...Chocolat

Well, Rex, I was very disappointed in how Juliet Binoche looked last night. I kept trying to find out why you are so enamored of this woman. What did you think?

xxx Mar 26th, 2001 01:23 PM

I think he would say <BR> <BR>j'ai droolé... <BR> <BR>

puzzled Mar 26th, 2001 02:07 PM

I like her very much as an actress and I think she has a sweet look and charming way about her when not acting. I'm a woman, so I can't feel what Rex must be feeling. But since you raise the question of her looks at the ceremony: WHAT WERE THOSE WEIRD STRINGS WOUND AROUND HER?!!! She looked very uncomfortable, like she was wearing some bizarre old fashioned corset. Did anyone else notice that? I was surprised, because she usually looks so natural, not stiff.

Lidija Mar 26th, 2001 02:11 PM

I think they were strands of pearls weren't they? I think she was going for a kind of flapper look? Usually she looks great on film but something was off with the look last night.

xxx Mar 26th, 2001 02:18 PM

......we now return to our regularly scheduled travel forum (which relates to travel matters).............

puzzled Mar 26th, 2001 02:19 PM

Maybe they were pearls but they were kind of tied around her in a strangling way that just looked unnatural and uncomfortable. I think the look was off because I really believe she was wearing some horrible corset. Her shape looked painfully cinched like pictures I've seen of Victorian ladies and she looked physically in distress which would make sense if she really was wearing such a contraption. I'm curious if anyone else also thinks that was the problem.

xxx Mar 26th, 2001 02:24 PM

she was sending a very special message just to me... <BR> <BR>it was: <BR> <BR>"Fermez les yeux. Rêvez. N'imaginez rien que les perles..." <BR>

Acad... Mar 26th, 2001 02:43 PM

I thought she looked wierd as well. It was "flapper" kind of look, I think. And, yes, I think those were pearls. <BR>Hmmm...the taste of some people...

BadGirl Mar 26th, 2001 05:42 PM

I think she deliberately dressed this way to through Rex off her scent.

spelling Mar 26th, 2001 05:46 PM

To "through" Rex off her scent? He's probably already "through" her scent as it is. Ad I'm threw with both of them.

StCirq Mar 26th, 2001 06:08 PM

I was surprised. I thought she looked "stifled," something I had ever before associated with Juliette. Must've been smoe Hollywood designer's idea.

Patrick Mar 26th, 2001 06:14 PM

I thought her look was pretty clear. Didn't she come from Mardi Gras where she went as a flapper and got caught in one of those bead throwing parades? Her Toni home perm seemed a little harsh also. But isn't she a splendid actress? And on a kinder note, has Julia ever looked better?

Caitlin Mar 26th, 2001 06:23 PM

Julia looked god, although honestly, I wasn't crazy about her dress. But it was refreshing to see someone so honestly excited and, frankly, blown away about being up there--especially a star of that magnitude. BTW, I don't know about the corset, but I heard Juliette Binoche tell some reporter that the pearls were all her own idea.

deepa Mar 26th, 2001 07:19 PM

Yeah, Binoche could have looked better but Bjork! Now, that was scary.

Jon Mar 26th, 2001 09:13 PM

Patrick, I usually enjoy your informative posts, but this time you dropped the ball. Comparing Julia Roberts to Juliet Binoche (whether acting abilities or beauty) is like comparing hot dogs to foie gras. <BR>Juliet looked and acted like a lady; radiating elegance at every turn. Julia looked like she was playing dress-up with a bottomless pocketbook. Did you hear the post award interviews? She is a textbook dingbat. I'm outraged that she won; even more outraged that she is today's highest paid "actress." Of course, the public that gave her this title is the same group that keeps Eminem on the music charts and Temptation Island on TV. <BR>

xwe Mar 27th, 2001 03:02 AM

I am new to this board and have a hard time to figure out why is this question posted and answered so many times here on this board? What is a relation with travel?

007 Mar 27th, 2001 04:52 AM

xwe -- sometimes we get off the topics. Simple as that. <BR> <BR>Yeah, no comparison between Julia and Juliet. Binoche is a beautiful, classy woman. Roberts bears strong resemblance to a horse -- big choppers stringy mane and that nose. Enough, I say! <BR>

Academy Award Mar 27th, 2001 06:32 AM

Sorry I misspelled Juliette Binoche the first time around. <BR> <BR>St Cirq, I took a little (mind you, I said "little") offense that you immediately blamed a Hollywood designer as the creator of her gown. Wouldn't it be more logical to think that a FRENCH designer created it? <BR> <BR>I don't want a fight, I love French designers. I, personally, liked Julia Roberts gown, (vintage French, wasn't it?). She just needs to learn how to wear dresses like that a bit more gracefully. And, I think she is a fine actress. <BR> <BR>All said humbly and in fun! <BR> <BR>

xxx Mar 27th, 2001 06:45 AM

I think Juliette'S dress was by Jean Paul Gauthier

Razz Mar 27th, 2001 06:56 AM

If this is going to turn into a "Bash Julia Roberts" session, count me in. <BR> <BR>Anyone who would make "Pretty Woman" and that dreadful "Sleeping With The Enemy" movie ought to suffer a lifetime Oscar ban. To give Julia Roberts an Oscar so that she is in the same league as Meryl Streep is a crime. Plain and simple.

StCirq Mar 27th, 2001 07:06 AM

Academy Award: <BR> <BR>Please note that I said I was surprised. Surprised because, among other reasons, yes, I would normally assume it was a French designer, but I couldn't imagine a French designer letting her go on stage wearing that thing she was wearing. <BR>In the end, I don't care what she wore. I still think she's a magnificent actress, no matter who dresses her.

one more Mar 27th, 2001 07:20 AM

Razz -- You forgot "Mary Reilly." <BR>

mark Mar 27th, 2001 07:51 AM

She looked like a man dressing like a woman (to paraphrase the infamous Ms. Grace Jones)

xxx Mar 27th, 2001 08:22 AM

And please keep in mind that Julia was obviously not "honestly blown away" by being up there. She has known for weeks that she was going to win, so she had plenty of time to fake surprise. She looked beautiful but I was very unimpressed by her dress. And I totally agree with the poster who calls her a "textbook dingbat."

Neigh! Mar 27th, 2001 08:32 AM

Julia's dress was, as she said, "vintage Gauthier." And my view on the whole thing is that it's rare that a truly talented person in that industry can get anywhere with any recognition. It's the nature of the beast, lowest common denominator and all that. Julia R. appeals to the lowest common demoninator.

AcademyAward Mar 27th, 2001 09:06 AM

Julia Roberts got my attention in Steel Magnolias. I don't care what you say, she, and that film, are both lovely. <BR> <BR>Talk about poor taste...Jennifer Lopez...yuk.

voob Mar 27th, 2001 09:18 AM

<BR>Jennifer gives new meaning to the word titillating!! <BR>BTW Julia's dress was <BR>"vintage Valentino" not Gauthier <BR>Julliette's lack of taste in fashion is well known-remeber the dress when she won best supporting actress--something out of a pirate movie <BR>Neverthe less she and julia are both lovely and terrific actors! (actresses) n

Maybe Mar 27th, 2001 09:58 AM

I don't know - I like Julia's dress. I thought it was very elegant. But I really like Joan Allen's coral dress. J. Lo? Gee it was nice to see her somewhat dressed for a change.

Donna Mar 27th, 2001 10:42 AM

I, too, am a die hard Juliette Binoche fan. I can understand Julia Roberts' Hollywood appeal, but, at the risk of being lynched, I must say she is not one of my favorites. I don't know quite what to think of Juliette's dress, but I loved the way she refused to acquiesce to Joan Rivers. Whether you like the way she dresses or not, Juliette Binoche is class through and through.

Ursula Mar 27th, 2001 11:01 AM

I guess I must have seen all French films with Juliette Binoche so far. She has been a star in France and Europe for years already. But her role in "Chocolat" was weak and she was rather mediocre too. I was very disappointed. I liked the role of the little village's mayor though. He did a nice job.

lisa Mar 27th, 2001 11:16 AM

I saw Tracey Ullman interviewed on the Today show the morning after the Academy Awards, dishing about the various getups, & her comment about Juliette Binoche was "Why was she dressed up as Jack Lemmon in 'Some Like It Hot'?" Meow. Catty, I know, but I still thought it was funny (and true).

Equal Time Mar 27th, 2001 11:21 AM

Hey, how's about we start ragging on the appearance and behavior of the guys for a change? For what Russell Crowe gets paid, you'd think it wouldn't have killed him to smile just once during the evening.

Academy Award Mar 27th, 2001 11:29 AM

Tom Cruise (who I usually swoon over!) didn't look too great, either! Tom Hanks was just so-so. I don't think I would even give Russell Crowe a second look... <BR>But, the handsome hunk that just gets my pulse throbbing...Steve Martin!!! Man, he just DOES something for me! <BR>Whew! I hear he's single again!!!

Caitlin Mar 27th, 2001 11:43 AM

Yes, we ALL have known for weeks or months that Julia Roberts would win, but I did think she was honestly blown away. I'm not a Julia Roberts fan and haven't seen most of her films anyway, and I do think Juliette Binoche is a terrific actor. However, in theory, if not always (or usually) in practice, the Academy Award is given for the performance, not the career, and frankly the "Erin Brokovich" performance was a lot stronger than the "Chocolat" one--it's not exactly the role of J.B.'s career; I don't get what all the hoopla is about that film and agree with Ursula on it. The real question in my mind, though, is whay did "Gladiator" wine? Please. As for Russel Crowe, I think he one for his performance in "The Insider," which he didn't win for last year. Consolation prize.

stacey Mar 27th, 2001 12:17 PM

Two comments on the whole Academy thing - <BR> <BR>Is it just me or is Bob Dylan starting to bear a striking resemblance to Vincent Price? <BR> <BR>I know Matt on Good Morning America mentioned it, but did anyone else notice that all the Best Songs were completely unsingable.....

angel Mar 27th, 2001 12:47 PM

I like Bob Dylan, but . . . a friend and I have joked about "closed captioned for the Dylan-impaired" (hint: see the lyrics so you know what he's singing). <BR> <BR>

joern Mar 27th, 2001 01:04 PM

Did anybody notice how Mike Powers had a double chin - his neck was inflating out past his jaw line - every time he spoke his chin would recede into his flabby adiposed neck - made me think of Jabba the Hut <BR> <BR>

xxx Mar 27th, 2001 01:11 PM

You're right...Bob Dylan did look like Vincent Price! Spooookkkkky. And about Julia Roberts, I though her dress and her big ol' teeth were fine, but what the heck was that on the back of her head? It looked like a spaceship had landed back there. Maybe a "vintage Valentino" spaceship? I dunno.

joern Mar 27th, 2001 01:12 PM

I mean - Mike Meyers - and I believe it's Jabba the Hutt.
