jenstu13 Aug 22nd, 2003 10:22 AM

Me too!!! It's fun to read about others experiences and relive your own experiences. Especially while at work.

Marilyn Aug 22nd, 2003 10:30 AM

I have a serious problem. I am afraid THEY may be planning an intervention.

ira Aug 22nd, 2003 10:31 AM

Hey Marilyn,

Great idea. A convention for Fodorites. Where shall we hold it?

FainaAgain Aug 22nd, 2003 10:33 AM

In San Francisco! Unless San Jose intervenes.

Statia Aug 22nd, 2003 10:36 AM

I, myself, am always wondering if there is a 12-step program for this.

GailLK Aug 22nd, 2003 10:36 AM

I have to admit, I'M HOOKED!!! It all started when I decided to go to Italy next year and needed some opinions on hotels, luggage, train travel.... Now I can't seem to go a day without checking these posts. I really enjoy having all this info at my fingertips, especially at work..
Thanks for all the feedbacks....

Grin Aug 22nd, 2003 10:38 AM

We are all addicted, are we not?

Marilyn Aug 22nd, 2003 10:43 AM

ira, you goofball, I said "intervention" not "convention". You know, where they put you in a room and try to deprogram you? Come to think of it, I really like the convention idea a lot better.

Faina, YES! SF is the perfect place, because we are both here. (And so is PCH, apparently)

anonymouse Aug 22nd, 2003 10:44 AM

Personally, I must check Fodor's a couple of times a day. It is really an illness, you know. I'm not responsible!

Seriously, I am truly thankful for all the help I have gotten from this forum. I think travel helps all of us to understand other people and cultures and, hopefully, be more loving and tolerant. Thank you, Fodors!

rhkkmk Aug 22nd, 2003 10:45 AM

i hope fodors has lots of money as they will soon be a co-defendent in my divorce case

sls15 Aug 22nd, 2003 10:45 AM

Addicted beyond belief!
I came for advice on Spain, I stayed for all the behind the scenes drama...San Jose, San Fransisco, name changes and bee booties???...no idea what it all means and I read it all the same.
Oh, and the travel tips of course.

Statia Aug 22nd, 2003 10:53 AM

rhkkmk - LOL!!! Me, too!

RLA Aug 22nd, 2003 11:03 AM

Confessions of a Fodorite:
Guilty. I'm glad I'm not the only one in over my head. My DH went to bed the other night leaving a note on the bathroom counter that said, "My wife left me for the internet." It will be awhile before I actually get to go, so for now, I go vicariously through you! Recently, I did share your pre-trip excitement.... all the way to the theater to see La Divorce. I couldn't wait to see Paris! My day is punctuated with Fodor check-ups. If I had a job, I'd probably be in trouble by now. I, too, can read your comments for hours. I have always railed against the dangers of chat rooms and talking to strangers on the internet, and make sure my teens don't do it. And, here I am. My family thinks I'm nutty for my passion here. I tell them it's legit, comprised of nice people who are sophisticated traveler's who are generous enough to share a wealth of info that we can all benefit from. They say, "Oh, sure..." However, they do enjoy the funny stories I recite to them. :)

Mischka Aug 22nd, 2003 11:17 AM

YES!
Grrrr......
But what fun....
:-)

gualalalisa Aug 22nd, 2003 11:22 AM

Completely addicted!

My husband (or DH, as we Fodorites like to say)is also wondering what I'm up to. I tell him I'm just planning for our upcoming trip but I find that I'm now reading all the different boards, not just Europe.

I love reading about everyone's travel experiences and perspectives, good and bad, and I, too, have gotten lots of valuable info here.

And yes, let's do the intervention/convention in S.F. - I would love to meet all my NorCal Fodorite neighbors.

teacherlady Aug 22nd, 2003 11:34 AM

I didn't know there were so many Northern California types on this board. Anyone else? What did you think of the thunderstorm last night? Tough to sleep.

maitaitom Aug 22nd, 2003 11:35 AM

When my wife asks me what I'm doing so long at the computer, I answer back that I am corresponding with my mistress.

She always sighs, and as she walks away she says with a shrug, "Oh, you're on the Fodors Board again."

I'm totally addicted. And if you don't believe me, you can always ask the Network Administrator where I work who is probably tracking all this ; )

swalter518 Aug 22nd, 2003 11:51 AM

I must stop! My trip is long planned but I live vicariously through eveyone elses. If I don't cut back I'm going to get fired!

Cherie Aug 22nd, 2003 11:54 AM

I'm totally addicted too -- I can't tell you how many times I've had to do a quick "minimize" so my boss doesn't see.
I started by looking for information for an upcoming trip to Paris. The trip is in three weeks (I promise to do a trip report) but I guarantee I'll still be checking daily even after the trip. The advice has been wonderful -- spot-on and often funny. You folks are great.

P.S. I'm a northern California gal too!

RLA Aug 22nd, 2003 11:59 AM

We can get our frustrated DH's or signifcant other's to bring us to a Fodorite Intervention (singles not to be left out), then we can all enjoy the convention! They really would faint if I said I wanted to travel to meet these "strangers" in person.

I tell them that they should read too. What a great supplement to at least our educations anyway. I have learned more about art and history than in school. I'm sorry to say, that my highest education was two years of college, and even then I knew nothing about art and little about anyone's history nor was I inspired to want to. Your comments intrigue me to research things you mention seeing. I am grateful that you mention it, and it's my job to figure out it's significance. I LOVE learning about it.

In a debate about whether kids should miss school due to travel, one poster (an educator or attendance clerk, I think it was) said, "Don't let school get in the way of education." I think it should be excused absence within reason. I once let my kids miss a few days due to travel only is they assured me they would not let thier school work fall. Much later I learned my son got some 0's because he never asked for his work. The teacher left the responsibility up to him and let him be accountable. I hated it, but what a great lesson.

Oops! Sorry, I am way off the subject of the original post.

HeatherH Aug 22nd, 2003 12:04 PM

I haven't posted much, but I read constantly! But, can anyone tell me, are trolls exactly what they sound like, and what on earth is DH short for?

PCHsmiles Aug 22nd, 2003 12:05 PM

... yes, Marilyn, in SF, but only for a while. Then, you know, PHC, and Malibu, at Surfrider Beach, on the beach. Someone said I never travel. I wrote this cute rejoinder, then the Fodor system ate it all up and characterized it as indigestible. I post from atop the hill, if you know the Ritz. The walk up earlier, after much wine and much fun talk, was ... shall we say, virtual. Cochon_Damne would appreciate that.

FainaAgain Aug 22nd, 2003 12:06 PM

Addicted? No, I'm not! I am here only Mon-Fri, not every day! And I can quit any time, just don't want to! And I am not in denial!

Statia Aug 22nd, 2003 12:07 PM

DH = Dear Husband. And, those who let us surf this board half the night are, indeed, dear husbands.

capo Aug 22nd, 2003 12:10 PM

And here I thought it stood for Dusseldorf Hauptbahnhof. :)

Lewis Aug 22nd, 2003 12:25 PM

My name is Lewis and I'm a ......

NancyB Aug 22nd, 2003 12:26 PM

My DH, who is an avid baseball fan, thought it was Designated Hitter...

PCHsmiles Aug 22nd, 2003 12:28 PM

... Faina, may I laugh? Giggles galore, thanks.

Andre Aug 22nd, 2003 12:32 PM

Guilty as charged.

I am totally addicted. And now that I have dsl at home I am REALLY hopeless! At least tying up the phone lines was a deterrent.

kismetchimera Aug 22nd, 2003 01:12 PM

Welcome to my World!!!!Sometimes I wonder what the day would be without reading Fodors' funny, interestings, educationals POSTS?

Jennie Aug 22nd, 2003 01:12 PM

Oh yes . . . I have mentioned on many a thread what a Fodors addict I am. I am so addicted that I keep thinking, rather wistfully, "Gee, I'm really going to miss the Fodor's board while I'm in Europe next month!" I mean, I'll actually BE IN EUROPE and I'm worried about not getting my Fodor's fix.

That's sick . . .

Jennie :)

dln Aug 22nd, 2003 01:16 PM

It would be overstating the obvious to tell you if I am!

Natalia Aug 22nd, 2003 01:21 PM

Just wait until you are IN Europe, go to an internet cafe for emails and just check in on Fodors for a quick peek and end up staying on waaay too long, then you know you are really addicted.
This is what I did in Sorrento earlier this year.

Mucky Aug 22nd, 2003 02:12 PM

My DW ?? (Dear wife I guess) has also gone to bed.
She gives up on me !
When I got the internet years ago I never ever imagined there was a forum that I would base my travels on !!
Off to Tokyo, Australia and Singapore from Wales in 110 days with 2 teenagers ...oh my god will fodors pull me through !!!
Muck

bobthenavigator Aug 22nd, 2003 02:42 PM

The true test of addiction is when you check in daily even when you are not planning a trip. I have been watching the transition of addicts over the past six years or more and it seems to be contagious. I am not aware of a antidote--- once an avid Europhile.

Koshka Aug 22nd, 2003 02:51 PM

I actually did a focus group here in San Francisco for Fodor's market research when fodors.com was in the planning stages.

They were right; travellers love to talk and share.

I sort of come and go depending on whether we are planning a trip, but I always return and am always happy to be a small part of such a cool and knowledgeable group.

Betsy Aug 22nd, 2003 02:53 PM

Yes! Yes! Let's do a SF int...er....convention, ie Get Together. A bunch of us did that a few years ago and it was great fun. We met at a hospitable Fodorite's beautiful apartment in SF and walked to a local Italian restaurant. Decided that maybe a potluck at someone's home might be more conducive to good conversation. It's hard to mingle at a restaurant. Anyone want to step up to the plate (figuratively)? DH and I will come, I'm sure Kal (from the US board--lives in Sacramento) and DW will come and probably bunches of others. Shall I start a new thread to check for interest?
