This thread is over 48 hours old, and I have "been away so long" that I haven't seen it until now (wink).
I am addicted to citing how many threads over the past several years have dealt with this subject. There's addicted, and then there's CHRONICALLY addicted. Approaching four years, and close to 7000 posts... Best wishes, Rex |

It's women grow and men flounder. Check out the lonely planet and you'll see. |
posting from Malibu: Marilyn, I'll be out again October 17-20, maybe extended, if you have a SF get-together ... I'll be in LA, but might be able to easily come up for one day. Oh, for those of you who thrive on trip reports, may I say the morning seems very cool indeed, but coffee on the beach isn't a bad way to start the day. Nobu last night (Cross Creek Rd., just off the PCH), was nice as usual. Ferrari city! The well off really flock down from the canyons just east of the beach. Today, the veranda of the Bel Air Hotel on the canyon road, just off Sunset Blvd., an easy exit off the PCH. Tonight, not sure ... maybe the Reel Inn, for those of you into seafood at a causal pace. You pick your own, hopefully something not too glazed and without that stare. I'm never sure I actually end up with my choice. The finished products all look the same. Anyway, have a good one, time for another cuppa.

I am not addicted.....I could quit anytime I wanted.
And if you believe that, I have a bridge for sale. |
Addicted since 1999 and proud of it.
|
PCHsmiles-
I was in Malibu visiting my parents over the weekend. Did not know that there was a Nobu at Cross Creek. Do you mean that smelly little sushi place next to the Cantina Mexican place??? Malibu is still void of any good food. I think Granita and Koogies are both bad. If it wasn't for the Malibu Mutt I would have starved as kid growing up on the beach! |
Wow! I can't get over how many Fodorites we have in the San Francisco area! I'm in Alamo (in the East Bay) and would LOVE to do a get-together. Any place and any time but September 9-19 -- we'll be in Paris then. So if it's after that, maybe I'll have a lot more to talk about!
|
... Nobu is located at 3835 Cross Creek Rd., one block off PCH. Telephone 310-317-9140. So, you see - new information. The sushi was very nice indeed - very upscale crowd. Not sure what place you have in mind. It's up the street from Wolfgang Puck's Granita, if you're aware of that restautant's location. And near a nifty Italian we're at tonight - Allegria, at 22821 PCH - 310-456-3132. Now I must get off the hotel's computer for a while so they can do some business. And we're headed for the Bel Air Hotel, and that takes 20-25 minutes. Have a good one - I know we will!!

Re: And if you believe that, I have a bridge for sale.
If it's a huge suspension bridge and you can give them a nice discount, the Italian government might be interested. :) The latest National Geographic has an article about what will become the world's longest suspension bridge, by far, spanning the Strait of Messina. http://www.strettodimessina.it/pages/prog-e.html |
... hey, Calamari, enough mooching off the parents. Take 'em out to dinner soon - why not the Reel Inn - sounds like your kind of place. Oh, there's also a Subway, in the shopping center with Granita. Immediate parking right there in front. Are you driving or on foot?
|
I know I'm addicted because I am not really planning a trip right now but have to hear about everyone elses.
I have also been addicted since 1999 |
ran accross this board while researching my upcoming trip to Italy. Now must check it daily, I lurk a lot. Ahh but I have learned so much grasshopper. Have my Scavi reservations as well as Scala Reale. Thnks to all!
|
OK, SF area fodorites, I will post a new thread sometime later this week in an attempt to start the ball rolling for a get together. Meanwhile, any of you who are interested, please send your email address along with your fodors name and your real name to my hotmail address so we can do the organizing directly, off the fodors site. Oooooo, fun!! :-D
|
Marylin, maybe you can start 2 posts - 1 here and 1 on USA website?
|
Will do, Faina. I was thinking the same thing. I may actually post it on Asia as well, since I go on that forum often.
Meanwhile, I have already heard from 2 of you directly -- terrific! I need a little time to plan this post for maximum efficiency, but I'll get to it later this week. I'm in the midst of buying a new car -- giving up my Mercedes for a Honda Civic Hybrid! I'll be the one driving past you all at the gas station. It gets about 50 mpg. |
I am 100% hooked to this site :)
|
Marilyn,
I plan to contact you personally, and I think it's great you are taking the initiative to "lead the way." A suggestion, tho, just in case... Perhaps if nobody steps up to open their home to strangers (I know *I* wouldn't, even to Fodorites) perhaps we can meet up at a restaurant? |
Great Koshka, exactly what I was thinking. I would like to get an idea of where everyone will be coming from to see if SF is the most central location. Also, how many of us, and what date suits the largest number of people. I assume if I get this started everyone will jump on the "thread" in true fodors style and I won't get stuck with all the work!

Hi PCHSMiles -
Sorry to say that I am not mooching off of the parents, but supporting them. My mooching days are long gone...sadly. The Reel Inn does sound like my kind of place. It is not in Paradise Cove though is it? WHere in Malibu is it? Regarding "Subway" I would not go near one of those places with a 10 foot baugette. The homestead is on Broad Beach Rd. so anything south of the colony is too far for the folks. |
Hi, Calamari - I was sort of kidding you! Actually we stopped in at Subway by Granita and had a Philly cheese steak, CA version. Not bad - but we were getting it to go so we could head east and explore some canyons. Like you, we normally avoid such places. I don't have the exact address for Reel Inn, but I can give you an approx. location. We stay on PCH at about 27500, just east of Surfrider Beach. When I head to LA, the Reel Inn is on the left hand side, I believe before Topanga Canyon, and certainly before Sunset Blvd. It is a real local dive, but lots of fun. And the food is not bad at all. You have to watch for it carefully - it right on PCH. Let me know how you like it. One to skip - Moonshadows on PCH - expensive and second rate. Decent italian on PCH - Allegria - about 27,700. We are yawning today - red eye once again, and I don't care how many times I do it, it's still wearing. We'll be out again in mid October, partly on business, so if you find any other decent places to eat, do let me know. Thanks.

PCHSMILES -
Ok. I know the Reel Inn you are talking about. I was not sure people actually ate there. You are right, it does look seedy. I know the chef/owner of Allegria. Have to say I have not eaten there since high school way before he owned it though. Sorry, but "good restaurants" and "Malibu" just have never gone together. I really have never understood why. The locals sure support the crap that is out there. My parents like the roasted chickens from Howes (used to be Trancas Market). I like to head up to Oxnard for some really grimmy Mexican Food with my mom once in awhile. The people of Malibu are starving and nobody cares!!! |
NAH!! Come to Boston.
|
Yes, I am super-addicted and wondering when divorce proceedings will begin, as my husband, who once encouraged me to get online pre-computer days, now feels he has created a monster.
But seriously I love to get online with questions before a trip, and after a trip, I love to read other people's experiemces....I learn a lot and I guess I am just a voyeur at heart. |
... lol, then you must know Casa Malibu at 22752 PCH. What a gem! Fireplaces in the rooms, the Pacific booming 100 feet away. Granita brings scones and coffee each morning, and it's only a 10 minute walk up to Surfrider Beach. Very 50's.
... this time we waded across a small inlet and walked the beach in front of the Colony, trying to look like we belonged with the stars! ... Allegria is very nice, simple southern italian. Good tuscans by the glass. They've actually built an extension, so one may sit upstairs with only a roof for nicer weather. ... But, you're right - not a diner's paradise. That's why we normally head into LA for dinner. Or, the small shopping center on Cross Creek, just off PCH, offers some decent places, very informal. Good food, not great food. ... at Reel Inn, you eye the fish you want, point it out, order some wine and stand around until your number is called. This is fried city, nothing dainty here. Fun, and yes, very seedy. But nice, and hopefully health violations at a minimum ... although I'd probably take pass on a tour of the kitchen if invited. |
cigale
What happend to all of the other posts on this thread? Here one minute gone the next. Must go refill the coffee cup. I am starting to "see things". BTW, I would love to visit Boston! I have never been! Travel all over the world but have seen very little of the USA comparitively speaking. |
PCHSMILES -
Yes, I know where the Casa Malibu is however I have never been inside since I have my own casa in Malibu. Sounds very nice and a great place to plunck my visitors down next time all of their vacations roll around. I have to admit, I would like Granita a whole lot more if they would bring scones to me in bed. Room service happens to be the key to my heart! If you like Italian food, have you been to Il Fornaio in Santa Monica or I Cugini? |
Have to admit that I also am becoming addicted . . scarry thought. All of you are really knowlegable and it's really fun to read about what everyone is doing and what everyone knows, especially about Italy.
|
Calamari, Don't know what's happened to them? were they rude posts?
Come to boston, we'll show you around!!!! |
Yep, I'm an addict. Just one posting and it happens...
|
Best crab legs I ever had were in Boston. Lazy crab legs, shelled and baked in a dish with herbed bread crumbs and light butter/white wine sauce.
|
I am developing crab legs sitting here at my desk reading all of these posts when I should be out swimming or WORKING! It is well worth it. You are all so entertaining. Better than some of my real friends in fact!
|
Count me in for the San Francisco fodorite gathering.
Koshka, I can't believe you were at that fodors.com focus group in San Francisco a few years back!!! I was there too! I wonder if we met. Were you the one who told me she canceled her Gourmet subscription after finding out about epicurious.com? Anyway, that was how I found out about this site . . . way back before they even launched it. And now, yes, I am addicted. Cheers. |
daria, email me with your email, name, and approximate location, so I can put you on the get together list. There are 6 of us so far, and I haven't even posted a separate thread yet. :-))
|
Hi Daria,
Nope, that wasn't me! I'm the one who doesn't cook and is perpetually on a diet! LOL "Gourmet" is not on my subscription list. :-) Wondering what a non-cook can bring to a pot luck, btw! |
... Calamari, do you ever simply drive the canyons looking at all the houses perched on the mountain side? Last week, we spied a new asian style house, but could never locate the street it abutted. We finally discovered that the builder constructed a tram from a street below the new house, and hauled his materials and tools up. Presumably the new owners will enter the house via tram - prbably 150 feet long. Can you imagine the cost. This place is very visible from PHC near Casa Malibu.
|
Koshka: wine, of course! :-D
|
pchsmiles
No, I have never seen the house you are referring to. I am usually in such a hurry to get to the folks house on the beach side that I rarely notice anything but the cars infront of me. It is almost a three hour drive with anxiouse kids and traffic. I will certainly keep my eyes open next time. Sounds amazing yet in violation of local building codes and the coastal commission. Have you seen the castle up above cross creek? I used to know the dentist who owned it. What a great kitchen! Do you visit Malibu often? Sounds like it from your name and local knowledge. BTW, you mentioned wanting to see "The Colony". I have a friend who moved there a couple of years ago. I had to bring her home one day after she had a "proceedure" and was all bandaged up. When we got to the gate the guard asked me who I was going to see. Just joking arounds, I told him I was there to pick up my children at Paul Hewson's house (Bono). He looked at my CAR, then at me and let me right in! No call, no writting down the licence plate, no ID check, no DNA testing. My friend was shocked as she thought that the security was a lot tighter. Drive up in a very nice car and you just might wiz by. You never know. We were laughing so hard I almost ran over Johnny Carson, well it might have been him. |
(bummed because I don't know anyone cool and famous....sigh)
:) |
Brim, you MIGHT know someone cool and famous -- since so many post here under assumed names.
Come to think of it, we're all cooooool...8-) |
