Re children with "unfortunate" names - My sister is a Head of Department at a secondary school (i.e. 12 years old & upwards) here in the West of Scotland. When she was doing her teacher training, many years ago now, she was placed for a couple of days in the school office to get an idea of how the admin. side of things worked.

A mother who had newly moved to the area came in to enrol her son in the school & when the Secretary asked for the boy's name, the mother replied that his Christian name was "Gooey" (I'd better not give his Surname - just in case he's a Fodorite now!.)

The Secretary explained that it wasn't possible to enrol the boy under a nickname, but the mother was quite emphatic that the boy's real Christian name was indeed "Gooey".

To reinforce her point she spelled out the name quite forcably - "G...U...Y... - Gooyey!"

Apparently she saw the name in a book and liked the look of it.

One of my workmates has a friend who works in a nursery school & has twin girls in her class named Armani & Versace.

Don't let anyone tell you that we're unsophisticated here in Scotland. Oh well, I suppose it's all part of life's rich pageant....

This is a very funny thread! I had that nasty flu that is going around over Thanksgiving weekend, so I spent a lot of time in bed watching TV. On one of those 'entertainment' shows, I saw that Michael Jackson also named one of his daughters Paris after Paris Hilton!

I worked with a single lady in Atlanta named Anita Mann. She got married and then became Anita Cook. I don't know if she was good in the kitchen or not :)

From the ridiculous to the sublime, I knew a dear elderly gentleman here in Spokane whose name was Golden Temple.

I went to college with a Toy Lamb and had a sorority sister named Penny Farthing. I know for a fact that although married, Penny kept her name and is a tremendously successful lawyer.
A while back I remember seeing some female judge, of all things, being interviewed on TV. Her first name was Bambi.

Yet another unfortunate name story: several years ago, when I worked in the DMV, I had a woman come in to renew her driver's license. Her name (and I am being completely honest!): Snow White. Now who would be that mean to a child?

I went to school with a guy named Ben Dover.

How about another unusual name that my DH saw in an insurance claim:" Handsome Son".

I have a very good male friend whose last name is "Cockburn." He was, for several years, a high school band teacher. Every year on the first day of school he'd write his name on the board and then turn and say to the class. "Yes, that's really my name. When I say "go" you will have 15 minutes to laugh uproariously until you get it all out of your system. After that, it will be as if my last name is Smith or Jones, got it?!"

He always says that when he gets married he's going to be the one to change HIS name.

Okay, while flipping through the boobtube last night I came across that hideous Paris/Nicky show. Lots of laughs watching them trying to figure out how to drive a truck (not). Then our TV broke. No kidding- the picture has gone wavy and greenish. I'm taking it as a sign from the gods.

This not nearly so risque, but my parents once knew a couple who named their daughters Sherry and Brandy. The hubby was known to be a partier/drinker, and admitted to naming them after the alcohol.

Well, I did start to feel wavy and greenish while watching The Simple Life, but I think it had more to do with my own gag reflex. Perhaps the TV has a gag reflex? Like it can only tolerate so much before breaking down?

Well, I have taken my share of kidding with my last name of LITTLE. However, it is nothing like the grief that my brothers have had to endure--you know my brothers, Peter and Richard !

In the continuing effort to relate troublesome or mischievous proper nouns (place names in this case). The local paper of Normal, Illinois, a reasonably sized town, carried this headline regarding the recent nuptials of a girl from the smaller town of Oblong to one of it's own:

My school librarian was Mrs. Harry Pitts. We figured the poor guy had sick parents.

Then when I went to school in France, every day I walked past a psychiatrist's office: Dr. Moncheri. I often thought how wierd it would be to be his patient and have to adress him that way.
