>COVERED by Bruce Springsteen???? He
>WROTE Blinded by the Light. For the
>lyrics, get the Greetings from Asbury
>Park album.

WOOPS! Sorry about that! I was sitting there flipping coins about the Springsteen/ Manfred Mann issue when I wrote that. I knew that Manfred Mann had the top-40 hit, but I should have gone with my initial instincts about who wrote it. After all, who more appropriate for singing about hotrods than "The Boss".

Dr. Betty, re "wichi tai tai" (or whatever), I have in my head a song from circa 1972 or 1973 with a title akin to "Anything Is Everything" which used both the mantra you cite plus the translation Elvira provides. It was a truly obnoxious song and I would routinely turn off the radio when it came on. Is this what you're asking about?
|
Neal, I'm not sure if the song in your head is the same one sung by Brewer and Shipley, so could you hum a few bars for me?

And the Earl of Moray...would he be from Scotland? Is this some strange sign that we will all meet in Burghead (astral projection or otherwise)?

Well done Elvira !

By a heck of a coincidence I watched an episode of 'The Simpsons' about 3/4 of an hour ago. It was set in church & Bart had replaced the organists music & the hymn sheets with a rock song. Guess what song ? Yup - the very same Iron Butterfly song ! ( Probably an old episode to you guyz 'cause I'm in the UK ). Yes I know it has been mentioned already by Annette in this thread but it was the first time I've seen the episode. Now, how about those funny little 'mottoes' scratched into the vinyl of old style LPs between the last track & the label ? On my copy of Led Zeppelin III it says 'Do what thou wilt' on one side & 'So mote it be' on the other. I take it this is due to Jimmy Pages interest in Aleister Crowley et all.... Any More ?

OK, Elvira - just how did rock and roll save your life??

Whiteside,
Know it's not your question, but all I can think of is "Uriah Heep"...

Then there's The Stone's "Pizza Burning" song, better known to some as "Beast of Burden"...

As for Amsterdam, Just ask for the menu. One particular cafe handed us a menu w/ laminated examples of each option. (NOT that I would know, but do not try to buy hashish in Lisbon...it's bound to be oregano and shoe-polish and no matter how much you try, it simply doesn't do much for ya')

Lastly, just spent the weekend w/ my little nephews and was tortured with Barney tunes the entire time. There was one that had the refrain "Ride Sally Ride" but ended up being some song about camels and humps...

Char,
You are saying Iron Butterfly played your prom?!!!!
Lucky you guys !
In 1971, my boyfriend and I were driving from our home in southern VT to a gig at a prom in some very *small* and uncool town in central New Hampshire Why? who knows..
got there late cause the cops pulled us over for speeding and as my boyfriend had waist length hair,... well, it took the bailbonds-man a couple hrs to show up.
But we got there. and a new ,unknown band named Aerosmith was playing the prom.
No one was dancing
But then, I didn't think too much of them either!
Much rather have seen Iron Butterfly.
|
Message to Nancy -
The boys school, Servite, thought the Iron Butterfly was very cool. The girls
schools, Marywood and Connelly, were all dressed up for some romantic cheek to cheek which DID NOT happen. We've always been amazed that the Sisters of the Divine Severity allowed us to listen to that godless Butterfly music.
Well, we were seniors - maybe they were done with us. Anyway, it's always made for a fun story. Thanks for the comments! Growing up in Southern Cal, we were priveleged to see lots of budding talent at our local city fairs and shopping centers. We used to go all the time to listen to the Beach Boys and Ike and Tina Turner and the Rightous Brothers and Dick Dale and so on.
We didn't know how cool we (or they)were. Char

That's funny, nancy.

Aerosmith played prom in 1976(?) at one of the high schools I attended in San Antonio (where I lived for 3yrs...)

I wasn't crazy about them either.

Iron Butterfly, however, IS a different matter!!! I had that album and someone swiped it when I got broken into, long ago! At least the burglar had taste! (he swiped all my really good albums!)

...the punk.

re: misheard lyrics:
Parakeet Nation (Cherokee Nation - Paul Revere and the Raiders)
Let's Fuget About Da Money (Let's Forget About Domani - Frank Sinatra)
Pompatus of Love????
|
Ah, yes... "Pompatus of Love".

Cecil Adams ("The Straight Dope" column) tries to get to the bottom of this one. It goes back way before Steve Miller and means... well, nothing!
Check this site:

http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a4_065.html

I always wondered, too, about that Pompatus of love thing!

Good one!

Jimi was apparently well aware of the various ways his lyric could be heard. The only time I saw him perform he clearly said "this guy" -- and pointed at a guy in the front row.

By the way, the "duece" in the Springsteen song the same one as in the Beach Boys song "Little Deuce Coupe": a 1932 Ford Model A coupe, which were (and still sometimes are) often made into hotrods. Apparently lots of them were made, and then the depression and WWII curtailed private car production drastically, so lots of them were still around, and well preserved (and cheap) in the late 40's and early 50's. My father's first car was a deuce coupe.

here's one for you:

Right out of college (within days of graduating) I went to hang out for a week with my college roomie at her Dad's place in Long Beach CA. I rented a car, we drove to San Francisco along Highway 1, listening to the Ramones, Fleetwood Mac, etc etc

there is a song by the Ramones called Blitzkrieg Bop. She admitted to me that when she was younger, she always thought they were singing, "Let's Drink Pop"

(we are from western PA - we say pop, not soda).

TOO funny. especially if you know the Ramones music... and I can't sing anything but Let's Drink Pop when I hear the song...

Misheard lyrics:

Bee Gees 'How deep is your love ?'.

'You come to me on a submarine'.

( 'Summer Breeze' ).

Song called 'Sam' ( I think ) by I know not who:

'Do you need a shoulder of ham ?'.

( 'Do you need a shoulder oh Sam ?' ).

Desmond Dekker:

'Me ears are alight'.

( 'The Isrealites' ).

Kansas "Ducks in the Wind"
Van Halen "Padded Bra"
Creedence "There's a Bathroom on the Right"

And my favorite version of God Bless America "through the night with a light from a bulb"

My niece at three sang something "Lucy the whirl from my Harley if the chain don't break". No idea what song or the artist...
|
I think I know that one, elvira.
I just can't put my finger on it.

Okay, Elvira, if the lyrics aren't "there's a bathroom on the right," WHAT are they? This has bugged me for more than 20 years. 25 years?
