In a Godda Da Vita

My good People,
Having a bit of 60's moment here and can't remember who did this song. Help me out pleasssee....

I await your response,
Dr. Betty

Susan Dec 8th, 2000 07:34 PM

Dr. Betty; Iron Butterfly!

Dr. Betty Dec 8th, 2000 07:40 PM

Susan,
You are a blessed saint! You must consider joining us for the Beltane tour 2001. Really, I'm sitting here having dinner with the hubsters, listening to "Tommy" and some how we got onto this song and he thought it was Steppenwolf. Is this forum not the best?

Grazie Mille,
Dr. Betty

Rex Dec 8th, 2000 07:44 PM

Since i missed answering this for you (by what - - 11 minutes?), let me at least correct the spelling:

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Courtesy of (what else?)

www.ironbutterfly.com

Best wishes,

Rex

Annette Dec 8th, 2000 07:50 PM

A funny bit on the Simpsons featured the Springfield Church choir and congregation singing In a Godda Da Vita ala "churchy organ" style.

Dr. B, if you've got a hankering for Iron Butterfly, you can download it fo' free over at www.napster.com.

Susan Dec 8th, 2000 08:05 PM

Dr. Betty: Glad to be of help! Sorry I can't make it to Beltane 2001, we're planning a trip to Europe in Sept. (I really love "Tommy," too!

Dr. Betty Dec 8th, 2000 08:17 PM

You guys are the best!

Okay. There was another piece that came up. Please forgive the phonetics...
"Wichie tie tie timmeron ho ranita ho ranita..." What was that?

It's the count down,
Dr. Betty
Bill Dec 8th, 2000 08:37 PM

Uhhh... Brewer and Shipley? (Of "one toke over the line" fame.)

Dr. Betty Dec 8th, 2000 08:46 PM

Good God bill,

Are you for sure? I think I saw those 2 in concert. It very well could be. Amazing what threads the brain remembers.

Dr. Betty

Bill Dec 8th, 2000 08:57 PM

I have this idiot-savant thing for old tunes. Now if I could only do that for a living...

Annette Dec 8th, 2000 09:13 PM

If I'm not mistaken that is a chorus of "Lady Marmalade" by that great belter, Patti LaBelle

nancy Dec 9th, 2000 04:23 AM

I would go with Brewer & Shipley over Patti LaBelle (much earlier than her!)
but, as with most things from that period of my life...it all exists in one big "haze"y fog.
nancy

Bill Dec 9th, 2000 05:45 AM

Getting this thread back to Europe... *grin*
Any of you been to Amsterdam to relive those "hazy daze" of your wicked youth?
My wife and I were there last Spring and naturally just HAD to sample the wares at a "coffee shop". It had been a good 15 years since we had last indulged (actually, when our first child was born - interesting how such things make you instantly serious about life). Anyhow, we had a great time seeing the city with a pleasant buzz. We're still clean & sober back here in the States, but it sure was fun to visit Amsterdam!

Quiz Corner:

Who remembers the film that featured the Iron Butterfly song mentioned above ? Hint: A crime caper featuring a character who has attained world wide "fame".

Chikn Dec 9th, 2000 07:41 AM

Hah! Maybe this is the place where people knowledgeable about everything under the sun can FINALLY help me with something that's bugged me for decades. What is the second line of "Blinded by the Light"?

(This relates to Europe because I've been there, it's nice, I like it, and this forum seems attract proportionately more smart people there than others, or at least more knowledgable.)
Susan Dec 9th, 2000 08:11 AM

Dr. Betty: Wichi Tai Tai is definitely Brewer & Shipley. I have the album, the title of the album is "Weeds."

Bill Dec 9th, 2000 08:38 AM
Chikn -
Ah, the second line of "Blinded By The Light". That's a classic of misunderstood lyrics... what's known in the trade as a "mondagreen" (derivation too complicated to explain). Go to:
http://www.thechicagoloop.net/lyrics/
They've got a ton of them, and many will make you laugh so hard you cry.)
Here's what they say about the line from the song by Mannfred Mann's Earth Band" (later covered by Bruce Springsteen):
Heard as:
"Wrapped up like a douche, another runner in the night"
Actually:
"Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night"
(It relates to some kind of hotrod engine... I think.)

- Bill

PS. Remember Elton John's "Hold me closer, tiny dancer"? Some people are convinced he said "hold me closer, Tony Danza".... Makes sense in a perverse way. Just like Jimi Hendrix's "Scuze me while I kiss this guy". *grin*

Beth Anderson Dec 9th, 2000 09:00 AM

makes me remember a funny story... (second hand - and not apocryphal - I fully trust the source)

there was a radio station, growing up, which (of course) played the actual vinyl albums (of course, that's all they had back then).

anyway, late one night a DJ must have fallen asleep and this song had a skip at the end and played and played and played and played and played..... I don't know how long, must have been hours. or something.

anyway, a few days later some stoner called in to the same radio station requesting the "2 hour version of In a Gadda Da Vida" and was quite serious!

HA HA HA

ok, maybe it's a location joke - you had to be there.

:-)

Dr. Betty Dec 9th, 2000 09:02 AM

Yes indeed!

Brewer and Shipley it is. What does whichi tai tai and the rest of that phrase mean? I'm sure I heard it as a mondagreen... have now been listening to it all on Napster (thank's to my 13 yr.old daughter). Have to go now and check out this website that Bill has mentioned. But before I go, I've gotta think of the movie that Whiteside has hinted at. I may have to find it on the Iron Butterfly website. The best I've narrowed it down to is that a "crime capper" would be a light kind of mystery as opposed to a mass murder blood and gore kind of a thing. So that brings to mind Peter Sellers. Am I close?

Dr. Betty

Susan Dec 9th, 2000 09:31 AM

Dr. Betty: OK, I went and dug out the album. The correct spelling is Witchi-tai-to. I don't know what the line means, but it certainly sounds Native American and there is a picture on the album of an Indian brave on a horse with his arms stretched out and looking up as if he's praying. I thought there might be some explanation inside, but no such luck.
