robdaddy Oct 30th, 2001 02:36 AM

Beth--Fantastic! You're on a positive roll, and I wouldn't be surprised if you don't have additional interviews lined up before you leave. I have been following your saga for several weeks now, and I'll bet I'm not the only constant reader and occasional contributor who is cheering you on. A wee bit of advice: apparently you have excellent experience and education, so please don't feel you have to take the first thing offered you unless you really feel good about it...somebody, somewhere is foaming at the mouth for a candidate just like you! Just know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. Have a successful trip, and let us know the minute you know. (I wonder if our English cousins have an expression equivalent to "woohoo!")

Kavey Oct 30th, 2001 03:04 AM

Hey Beth! <BR>Muchos Congrats! <BR>Would LOVE to meet in London. Drop me an email, and we can fix a date... <BR>Hugs to you and to those who said Hi, above. <BR> <BR>Kavey

Paige Oct 30th, 2001 03:35 AM

Judy Oct 30th, 2001 04:15 AM

Renee Oct 30th, 2001 04:17 AM

Good luck to you, Beth. I will say a special prayer that you receive the job that you desire and will meet your every need. Hard work truly pays off!

beth anderson Oct 30th, 2001 04:40 AM

Hi everybody, thank you so much. I have so much positive energy flowing from everyone, I know I am gonna get a job soon. I'll send postcards if I have your addresses - my email is a real address. <BR> <BR>Can't believe how much my life has been on spin cycle in just one week. In the ten days since I left I have been to Charlotte NC, Dewey Beach DE, here, home to PA tomorrow for 5 days then off to London. <BR> <BR>thank you all for listening to me prattle on about my little life - your support is tremendous and I don't feel as if I am making this jump alone! <BR> <BR>more later as the saga unfolds... <BR> <BR>:-) <BR> <BR>Beth

Sheila Oct 30th, 2001 07:28 AM

Congratulations Beth. I have only been to London once but I absolutely loved it. Good luck in finding the job of your dreams.

kk Oct 30th, 2001 07:31 AM

Speaking of positive energy, Beth, imagine how much of all of ours is flowing to you. That should help, too. <BR>Also imagine, if you will, how many people will now want to come visit you, once you are ensconced in London with your spiffy new job. <BR>I hope that dream comes true for you! <BR>All the best, kk

lisa Oct 30th, 2001 08:14 AM

WOOO HOOO! You go, girl! Good luck with the interview and let us know what happens. And if you get the job, will you help another Washington-area Fodorite find something over there too?

Danna Oct 30th, 2001 11:28 AM

Beth!!!!!1 How wonderful, even through my green eyed jealousy I wish you good luck! Fingers crossed here for you.

Lori Oct 30th, 2001 12:16 PM

Wonderful news ... Good Luck!! London is my favorite city. I hope you get to meet Kavey, she sounds like a wonderful person.

Julie Oct 30th, 2001 01:22 PM

Beth, <BR> <BR>London - my all-time favorite city! How wonderful for you. I had visited London several times before I went to school there for a summer - it was amazing. Congrats and I wish you all the best.

Ann Oct 31st, 2001 09:04 AM

Congrats, Beth! You're going about this the right way--get a job first, to make sure you're all legal and such. <BR> <BR>Couple of observations, from having worked in the UK: there tends to be a much more rigid hierarchy in the UK (Obviously, not all companies will be like that, but it does apply to many. You may even not be able to call your boss by her/his first name! I did only encounter that in a couple of places, but I couldn't believe it.); companies there LOVE to send people on typically useless classes all of the time, so they can get use out of made up words like "synerginistic"; people tend to get promoted simply on how long they've been with a company, not on skill and hard work (again, obviously there are exceptions, as I know I'll get battered by future posters); it's much more "who you know" rather than "what you know" than it is here in the U.S; I found that while I worked fewer hours in the UK, I was more productive during those hours. People tend to put their heads down and work hard during those 7-8 hours at their jobs, with little socializing outside of lunch and tea breaks. But, with the exception of a few industries, most people are out the door at 5 p.m.; having a few drinks at lunch isn't generally frowned upon (but take your lead from your co-workers on that one); there tend to be a lot more socializing after work with your colleagues than there is here in the U.S. <BR> <BR>Also, my first interview in the U.K. was bizarre. Instead of meeting with one person, I was interviewed by a panel of SEVEN! And this wasn't exactly a CEO position. I've never had an interview in the UK with less than 3 people. Very disconcerting at first. Here in the U.S., I rely on my ability to turn the interview into a conversation, and you can't really do that with 7 people. <BR> <BR>Good luck with the interview! It's been the warmest October on record in the U.K., so hopefully that nice weather will continue for you. I had sleet and rain on the day of my first interview in England. <BR> <BR>With your positive attitude, I'm sure you'll do well.

kathryn Oct 31st, 2001 12:21 PM

Congratulations Beth, you have put so much determination & hard work into achieving your goal, that I'm sure it will stand you in good stead at your interview, and I will be thinking of you & wishing you luck.I'm about 100 miles north of London, but if I can help out at all with any plans, let me know.Knock 'em dead girl!

Agent 009 Oct 31st, 2001 12:24 PM

Beth <BR>HUGE congratulations from Agent 009! <BR>

bobbie Oct 31st, 2001 12:53 PM

Very exciting! hope all goes well, were you maybe going to join us NYC fodorites for lunch in November? just guessing from your email address...hope you'll still be able to make it and then can us know the outcome! fingers crossed!

Robin Oct 31st, 2001 01:54 PM

One more big WOOOOHOOOO from here! (And an extra BOOOO because it's Halloween!) <BR> <BR>Best of luck and extra good vibes to you!

beth anderson Nov 1st, 2001 02:54 PM

Hi all, <BR> <BR>again, thank you so much. It is really amazing, when you finally get serious about doing something, you would be amazed at the connections you will make. <BR> <BR>My aunt phoned me today to tell me she was relating my story to her doctor - he has a daughter living there who is in my field and might be able to pass me on to someone to meet with... <BR> <BR>I am saying this as courage to anyone else who may be thinking of the same thing. Make up your mind you are gonna just jump, hold your breath, and go for it! at minimum it is a cool adventure and at least you tried. <BR> <BR>more later as the story unfolds - if anyone wants my list of jobsite links, etc - let me know, it may take a while but I can send them to you. I won't have easy access to the internet shortly as I will be traveling... <BR> <BR>thanks everyone! <BR> <BR>hugs, <BR> <BR>Beth <BR> <BR>ps. I hope to be able to attend the Fodors NYC luncheon. depends on how exhausted I am and how much $$$ I have left after this trip - to make the road trip. Is it still Sunday? I guess 8 hours drive in one day wouldn't hurt. up & back, eh?

Diane Nov 1st, 2001 07:12 PM

Beth - GOOD LUCK! There is a lot of positive energy just waiting to be tapped. You have to take action in order to tap it...and you're doing just that. Wheeeeeeeee! (Maybe we'll be meeting up with you when we visit in April!)

Ann Nov 7th, 2001 10:11 AM

Beth-what's your field, and what kind of job are you looking for? Who knows, maybe someone on this site can give you a name or contact?

beth Nov 7th, 2001 10:37 AM

Hi, <BR><BR>I am an attorney in telecom. I have quite a few contacts lined up now, and have been on email as I have to keep in touch with everyone I am meeting...<BR><BR>so you'll see me lurk here occasionally... <BR><BR>things are going well so far - bought a cell phone, met Kavey today for lunch and we'll probably meet up again next week...<BR><BR>and tomorrow is my BIG DAY! the first interview. <BR><BR>I have met SO many cool people here... everyone talks to you! in DC I have many friends but I seem to find that people are more reticent to just talk to strangers. <BR><BR>I also will be searching for a flat. I already have one contact for that - some people I met and chatted with for an hour in a coffee shop has a friend who is looking for a flat mate. <BR><BR>more later!! (I may post this separately as I am sure everyone is bored reading this..)<BR><BR>byebye!!<BR><BR>Beth

Julie Nov 7th, 2001 12:28 PM

Hi Beth, I have been reading your posts and am envious of the opportunity you are taking advantage of. I am curious though, as an attorney, I assume your degree was obtained in the USA, what do you need to do in order to qualify to practice in the UK? I also have a JD, but work out of field. I never thought of the possibility of working in Europe until I read your last post. Now you have me very curious...hubby has always mentioned moving to Italy, I only thought of going after we retire...but now, I might consider looking into an earlier move.

beth anderson Nov 11th, 2001 04:10 AM

Hi all, <BR><BR>more adventures:<BR><BR>I went on a London Walks yesterday and made a new friend - an American who works for the Red Cross, she and her husband are stationed in Germany but they put her on a temporary assignment here in London. nice to meet another "local" even if its only a temporary local!<BR><BR>I also met a very nice couple in their 70s (Margaret and Dennis) - I went to Whitehall to watch the Remembrance Day ceremonies and happened to stand next to them, we talked for a bit and they invited me to go with them to the American Embassy to lay flowers at the Memorial to FDR. Very nice of them - they drove me to the Embassy at noon (very quiet at that time oddly enough - we found a spot to park immediately).<BR><BR>After they lay the flowers at his feet we took a few pictures and then they dropped me at Charing Cross station - I am in the EasyEverything cafe there now - and am heading to Greenwich momentarily. <BR><BR>They were a very interesting and sweet couple - they lived in London during the Blitz - (they were both 10 then) and told me of being bundled off to the countryside for a time. <BR><BR>They also told me their daughter lives in NYC - her birthday was 11 September - you can imagine how they must have felt when they heard of the attacks! They had just spoken to her minutes before to wish her happy birthday...<BR><BR>anyway, must dash. I think I will post this separately as I imagine no one will read it here...<BR><BR>Beth

Wrong, wrong. We wait with baited breathe.

Leslie Nov 11th, 2001 05:31 AM

Beth,<BR><BR>Brown Rudnick and Hale and Dorr, both Boston based law firms, have offices in London.

pedant Nov 11th, 2001 05:45 AM

"We wait with baited breathe"<BR><BR>Goodness, I wait with bated breath to see if your bait catches anything!

BTilke Nov 11th, 2001 09:00 AM

Good luck Beth! You know, my husband and a friend were also in London yesterday, watching the Whitehall ceremonies, etc.,--who knows, you may have passed each other! They did a Eurostar day trip from Brussels (trains ran about half an hour late each way) but they had a great time. My husband went to the royal Portrait Gallery and ordered a copy of a painting hanging there of his great-great uncle (you can special order copies of almost any of the portraits in either paper or canvas). The weather was perfect and they can't wait to go back. <BR>Glad you found the EasyEverything cafe--I've used the one in Brussels when my home connection was down. <BR>BTilke
