The press here in the UK are saying NO LAPTOPS or CELLPHONES are allowed.
The list, as of this morning, is Cash, Creit cards and tickets in a clear plastic bag. Prescription medicines, spectacles, women's sanitry items loose (not boxed), handkerchief or unboxed tissues, keys (but not fobs containing batteries), water purchased air-side (not for US flights), duty free perfume and alcohol (not for US bound), strollers if x-rayed and only airport issued wheelchairs, baby milk (and breast milk) if tasted by parent at check-in. NOTHING ELSE AT ALL. But don't worry, if your top-of-the-range laptop is broken in the hold, you're entitled to £50 compensation. |
Latest news from LAX...lines seem to be moving...and carry on bags are allowed. The news states that the airport itself is abiding by TSA policies(http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtrav...rocedures.shtm) however check your airline...they may have special restrictions.

UK and US security agencies are doing the wrong thing. The solution is not to look at baggage, but to look at passengers, and ask them questions. It works for El Al; it will work for anyone else who decides to try it.

This may sound racist but dang it these are the people trying to kill us. I would like to see the passenger list ! And belive you me, I will be checking EVERYONE out on my flight. The sky marshall can take a nap, cause I will be on patrol. |

And watch out for: women with headscarfs, beards, people not drinking. As an additional measure, you could consider serving bacon sandwiches and monitoring those who refuse to eat. The latter measure may obviously upset people called Benjamin or Moeshe (If this latter sentance upset you as being stereotypical, try looking up Irony in the dictionary). |
Given that the components to build bombs can be smuggled aboard airliners undetected in body cavities, what might be recommended as a workable alternative to profiling?

In all seriousness, can somebody explain "profiling" to me? How does it work in practice ? Do you iidentify people from a flight list on name, looks ? Once you have identified them, what do you do ? Do extensive searches of all their luggage ?
Stop them flying because "You look like you pose a risk"? How do you control this - Have booking conditions - All passengers to check in at least 3 hours before hand unless you are calle dAbdul and have a beard, when 8 hours is required ? |
I would say that if you are in your 20's and are a muslim male that you should expect to be closely watched.
Like I said before, if it was blond Swedes that were hijacking planes then I would watch them just as closely. |

It was an acquaintance of one of the plotters who tipped off the police,maybe named Abdul or Mohammad. The shoe bomber's name is Richard Reid and the first names of three of the men just arrested are Don, Stewart and Brian. That wouldn't help you much would it? |

There seems to be some confusion here about what constitutes racism. To say "all blacks are stupid and lazy" is racist.
To say "intelligence has been developed that a black male adult, six feet and 170 lbs. intends to rob the Hawthorne branch of Bank of America" is information that law enforcement can use to apprehend a perpetrator. If a number of innocent people fitting the description are detained and questioned in order to be eliminated as suspects, no one's rights are being violated, and the public is safer as a result. We <u>know</u> that Islamic terrorists intend to hurt Americans. Anyone who might be one should be fair game for detention and interrogation. If white grandmothers from Altoona declare <i>jihad</i> on us, then they should be subject to the same. |
Robespierre - I disagree with almoost all of the above. If two people arrive at the airport and are treated differently on the basis of clour, then it is racism.
Islam is a religion. Anybody can convert to it, therefore anybody could be an islamic terrorist. To be able to detain and interrogate anybody on the basis of what they might do is an errosion of the basic right that we take for granted in the West. If those who maintain all of this is because "They hate us and our freedom", then the plans that you wish to put in place are far more of a victory for the extremists that X number of people killed in an attack. Under what circumstances would it be OK to detain and interrogate you or your family? |
First of all, "they hate us because of our freedom" is a load of propaganda. They hate us because we've chosen sides in the struggle between two indigenous peoples, both of whom have historically valid claims in the mideast.
I would gladly submit to detention and interrogation if it were conducted under all of the rights and protections guaranteed by our Constitution. El Al does this routinely on a daily basis. I don't know whether our government can or not. |
