We have the same problem in the US with forest fires and litter. Years ago, there were public service announcements on the TV--Smokey the Bear and Keep America Beautiful campaigns. But, you don't see these anymore because of our braindead president and his lack of concern for the environment.

He only cares about war and oil. This is why the US is starting to resemble a huge garbage dump.

Thingorjus-
Your comments reflect an ignorance of the causes of wild forest fires in specific , and responsibility for fire-fighting in general.

The long-time US policy of suppressing all fires allowed dangerous amounts of combustible forest-floor debris to accumulate over decades.

Firefighting jurisdiction is only the federal responsibility in federally owned lands -- there will be city, state, and county jurisdictions that have nothing to do with Bush, Clinton, or whoever happens to be president.

My heart also goes out to those directly and indirectly affected by these devastating fires. Unbelievable.

I also live in an area here in the western US that has seen many destructive fires this summer. It seems as if there is one every week and fire season goes on for at least another month.

Nerves are on edge. But we have not had the terrible loss of life here that you in Greece are experiencing. I hope for the best for you.

All of you in Greece and your families are in my prayers tonight. My OD visited there last summer to see some of your historical sites. I have been there to see your beautiful historical sites. Your food is some of the best in the world. I pray that you are all safe...
