These are wonderful ideas! Thank you so much!

Weekender, I'm staying at the new Hubs that Ann Marie recommended if it's a solo trip. I'm also holding rooms at a couple of Hiltons in hopes that my friend (who didn't go to Paris with me) works up the courage to take her first trip to Europe! I'll drop the reservation I don't need when/if she books the flight. I'm doing a couple of nights in Paris at "our" favorite hotel. I was going to do an overnight to Aberdeen (for Balmoral) but Paris called. ((l))

If you have a recommendation for London, let me know. She seemed relieved by the Hilton idea (and why not earn points?) but I'm not really emotionally tied to the choice.

Hub looks very nice and well priced too. London is so expensive anyway with the GBP at about $1.40.

You might want to look at the Nadler Soho or Nadler Victoria:

Enjoy your return to "our" hotel. I stayed there 4 times last year and would like to go back this very minute.

Walk from Little Venice to Camden. There's a good map here: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/walking/little-venice-to-camden#on-this-page-2

I enjoyed the walk around Hampstead Heath, with a diversion to the Highgate bone orchard, and lunch at the cafe behind Kenwood House at the northern end. And a free lecture at the Royal Society, and a concert for a very modest charge at St Clement Danes Church.

The Kenwood House library is beautiful, and we enjoyed lunch at the Spaniard's Inn, too. St. Bartholomew the Great and St. Etheldreda’s churches were interesting. I'm not sure when the roses start to bloom, but Queen Mary's Rose Garden in Regent's Park was beautiful when we saw it. I enjoy afternoon tea at one of the Richoux tea rooms as being both good and affordable unless you're looking for an experience at one of the big hotels. I've done a few London Walks and liked them all. Geffrye Museum, Denis Severs House, Sir John Soames House, Dickens Museum, Sherlock Holmes Museum only if you're a fan of the stories; otherwise, there are too many references to the characters. If you like chocolates, check out the Thornton's shop on Oxford Street and (sheer bliss) Charbonnel et Walker on Bond Street in Mayfair.

Maybe you get the idea that London is my favorite!

I think Nadler hotels are VERY comfortable for their price. You already have accommodation plans, but since Weekender mentioned them, I'll also recommend them.

We got a tip here to visit Spencer House when only has limited opening, but we totally enjoyed. The basin at Little Venice was fun. The Guidhall Gallery can't possibly be missed.

Pubs are quite a thing in the UK, Sentire Experiences London offers a " Traditional English Craft Beer Pubs Experience" which might be interesting and something different to do.

If you take the suggestion to visit Borough Market, you could have the toasted cheese sandwich a guy is selling there. Tied for the best toasted cheese sandwich I’ve ever had.

Hi Starrs, thanks for this thread. I am gleaning ideas from it too. I will be in London in 10 days, so maybe I will have ideas for you when I return. Be sure to watch Rick Steves London videos on his site. They have helped me.

I'm going with a friend so we've each made lists of what we want to do and see. Most of our ideas were the same. She put on her list the Burlington Arcade and the Burlington Beadles Police Force. I had to google it, looks cool. We also want to do the Abba Super Trouper interactive display at Southwark Centre.

It's been 10 years since I was last in London, and there is so much to do. When I was there 10 years ago we went Ye Olde Operating Theatre and Herb Garret. That was great, along with (what else for nurses??) The Florence Nightingale Museum. Very, very well done museum, a bit quirky. I cannot wait to do some London Walks too, the Beatles Abby Road for sure. Otherwise I'm good with all the usual sights. (more than good!!) I also had recommended to me a good place for tea across from the British Museum. It's in a book store (yes!!) called the Tea and Tattle.

Where exactly is the best toasted cheese sandwich??

rncheryl Mar 1st, 2018 12:32 PM

Hi Barbrn: I too liked the Florence Nightengale museum. As far as toasted cheese, this is on our to do list come September, thanks to MaiTai Tom's recommendations: Kappacasein / Borough Market

Nikki Mar 1st, 2018 01:33 PM

Yes, Kappacasein is where I got that sandwich.

tuscanlifeedit Mar 1st, 2018 02:27 PM

You know, I didn't really love the toasted cheese sandwich and haven't had again on repeat visits. But if you haven't had one, I guess it's mandatory. I thought the oniony-jammy dressing was too much, but hey, I'm the contrarian who thinks that the Dennis Severs House is bonkers. I prefer to sample as many little treats as I can at Borough Market.

Nikki Mar 1st, 2018 03:33 PM

I don’t remember any onion jam dressing, just cheese.

thursdaysd Mar 2nd, 2018 04:53 AM

If the toasted cheese sandwich is supposed to be a Welsh Rarebit (or Rabbit) there should be no onions, jammy or otherwise. And they don't sound appetizing.

Don't know if this will help, but here's my Madrid/London TR, starrs:

Scroll down to May 3 to get to beginning of London. I loved the Courtauld: http://www.courtauld.ac.uk/GALLERY/

Have a great time and please report back!

tuscanlifeedit Mar 4th, 2018 08:07 AM

There is an onion dressing on the Borough Market cheese sandwich. I don't think that it is in anyway supposed to be a Welsh rarebit, but just a cheese toastie.

Maitai Tom's cook, Tracey, did her best to recreate the sandwich. Here's their page on it, and you can see the onions.

From Kappacasein's own page on the Borough Market website:

and toasted cheese sandwiches, made with Montgomery cheddar, onions, leeks and garlic on Poil ne sourdough.

Thanks for the great new ideas!
Headed off to read TD's TR!

Heading there in May. These are great ideas! Does anyone have a favorite map they used? Would like to buy one now and get familiar with everything

thursdaysd Mar 7th, 2018 03:40 PM

The classic set of maps for London, which I used when I lived there, is an "A to Z.". On the ground, these days, I would probably use my phone. I like the mini, but you can get a bigger one if you want.
