This clue should be easy to search:

This small mining town (2 words: 5,7) in this country (2 words: 5,8) was not celebrating this week. It is the birthplace of the grandfather of a certain American politician.

Town: 5,7 ("e" = 2nd letter of 2nd word)
Country: 5,8

"e" from Champagne

Horni Benesov, Czech Republic:

I think that he should have told the red states -- "My grandfather is from a mining town."

:-)

No need to get into politics, but the electoral college map is very telling. The entire NE and the West Coast is blue. The rest, basically red.

By the way, a couple of weeks ago, the Times Week in Review ran a genealogical tree that argues that Kerry and Bush are distant cousins n-removed (n being at least 11 or 12?) with ancestries back to people in New England.

The two are not as dissimilar as people think, but the power of perception is really quite amazing. Bush, a scion from one of the most powerful family in the US, is somehow regarded as more in touch and less elitist.

Yes.

Here is a link to Horni Benesov's official website (somehow, I don't think there's much to see there...)

Clue: This prize (5 letters) for this field (9 letters) has usually been dominated by Americans, particularly those associated with this American university (3 words, 10, 2, 7). However, a person (name: 2 words, 2nd = "i", 4, 7) from this country (6 letters) was named a winner this year. This country is also where the named prize but for (subject: 5 letters) is awarded.

111op Nov 4th, 2004 08:25 AM

Sorry -- "i" is the 2nd letter of 1st name of the above person.

yk Nov 4th, 2004 08:32 AM

Nobel Prize for Economics
University of Chicago
Finn Kydland of Norway - where the Nobel Peace prize is awarded.

111op Nov 4th, 2004 08:33 AM

Yes.

Too easy. But well, I think that I need to go another trip to start coming up with obscure clues. :-)

One would not necessarily associate this small town (12 letters) in (country: 8 letters) with this (very famous) American artist. The artist is best known for (3 letters) art. One of his museums is located in the above small town, where his parents were originally from.

Town: 12 letters
Country: 8 letters
Artist: 4,6 ("d" = 3rd letter of first name)

"d" from Kydland

BTW, the town is a 10-hr train ride from the country's capital (10 letters).

111op Nov 4th, 2004 09:11 AM

Andy Warhol (pop art)

Medzilaborce

Slovakia

Minor correction: The town is a 10-hr trip from the country's capital. I am not sure if there is a direct train service to the small town.

yk Nov 4th, 2004 09:14 AM

Oh well, you figured it out already!

111op Nov 4th, 2004 09:19 AM

Well, it's easy to guess the artist must be Andy Warhol....

This isn't a great clue either, but well, it'll have to do for now.

Clue: He (5, 4, 2nd of last name = "e") recently took a very important job in the classical music world. He's apparently related to this famous (but dead) classical musician (6, 7), who's supposedly a great uncle. (I'm making this more difficult by just applying the generic label of classical musician.)

Hint on musician: Standard assessment is that the playing is note-perfect and that he was a consummate musician, but that the playing is consequently "cold."

111op Nov 4th, 2004 09:21 AM

Addition to clue: I meant to add this to make the clue a little more relevant and easier.

The famous classical musician (7, 7) was reputedly a finalist for the job that the person above ultimately took.

111op Nov 4th, 2004 09:23 AM

Oops -- didn't quite finish the whole thing -- capital is Bratislava. But we're on to the next clue already.

111op Nov 4th, 2004 09:29 AM

Sorry, another thing -- this person has not formally started the position. As is customary with these thing, he'll take the position when the current person in that position steps down (I forget when), but he has been named as the successor.

yk Nov 4th, 2004 09:45 AM

We're talking about the Metropolitan Opera's GM:
Peter Gelb
Great uncle: Jascha Heifetz
The "loser" : Plácido Domingo

111op Nov 4th, 2004 09:46 AM

Yes!

111op Nov 4th, 2004 09:46 AM

By the way, supposedly it was denied that Domingo was a finalist, but I think he was interested in the job.

This Baron (2 different spellings: 10 or 11) was best known in history for his tall tales.

A museum named after him can be found in this town (11 letters).

There is also a medical illness named after him.

Baron: 10 or 11 letters
Town: 11 letters ("d" = 3rd letter)

"d" from Domingo
