Actually I didn't know about Frauenkirche, but there're not that many four-letter composers, and you know my interest in classical music. Plus Dresden fit the clue so easily.
|
Clue: This city (7 letters) was praised by author (6 letters) as a (2 words: 5, 5, second word is also a city) mnay years ago.
Recently, the city's name has become attached to the name of an art movement led by artist (2 words: 3, 5). Last letter of last name of artist = "h" |
Hint: By the way, in case my clue is too vague, it's loosely related to yk's clue. Her clue made me think of this. And in constructing the clue, I was prompted to Google and read a little about the art movement.
|
Another hint: Bach had something to do with this former East German city.
(Maybe now it's making this too easy!) |
Leipzig, Little Paris (by Goethe)
Neo Rauch Someone else wants to post the next clue? |
Yes.
Maybe we can let this thread go dormant again for a while. |
The "z" from Leipzig appears as the 2nd and last letters of this mathematician's 5-letter surname and also as the 6th letter of his 9-letter birthplace.
|
Don't let the game die before it completes three years (it's third birthday was last month, when we didn't play).
|
Is this a famous mathematician? I can't think of any with two zs in their surname.
|
His first name has 4 letters, but they are just really two letters, each of which appears twice. He's from a country that has been known for mathematicians.
|
The two Zs are the second and fifth letter in his five-letter last name.
|
I've thought about this clue on and off, cmt, and I just can't get it.
|
Additional clue: He emigrated to the US and taught in American universities. Did I mention that he came from a country that has produced quite a few top mathematicians?
|
Yes. I'm thinking it's either Germany or Hungary, but I can't come up with any names that fit the clues. Also I was puzzled by how you came up with this clue. I thought that it might have something to do with the recent breakthrough by Grisha Perelman on the Poincare conjecture. However none of the top topologists in that area has a name that fits the clues -- not that I know, anyway.
|
How I came up with the clue? Sorry, my answer will be boring. I decided to find a noted mathematician from this country and see whether the name would have some of the letters from the previous answer. I don't know much about mathematicians but know this country produced many.
His country of birth has a language unlike that of its neighbors. |
Ok, after checking this website for lists of mathematicians, I've found it:
http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/...ies/Szasz.html Otto Szasz. I've never heard of this guy. But he was indeed born in Hungary. |
I want to check to see if people read the paper today.
Clue: She and her husband live in what is purportedly the only house by this architect in this country. (The architect and the woman are from different countries.) Furthermore, the article appeared with her portrait by one of the most preeminent photographers working today. Name (a) The woman (2 words, 3, 14) (b) The country (7 letters) (c) The architect -- commonly known as (2 words, 2, 9) (d) The photographer (2 words, 6, 6) The first name of the woman starts with e. The last name of the photographer starts with s. As a hint, there're quite a number of es in the woman's last name. |
a. Ann Demeulemeester
b. Belgium c. Le Corbusier d. Thomas Struth |
Yes, very good.
I thought that it was a very interesting article: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/27/st...ine/27ann.html Ok, so you can give us another clue now, but I hope it's easier. :-) |
I thought the Szasz one was easier because I dug him up in a very basic Google search. This next one is actually much more esoteric, but you'll probably get it right away because....
Though owned by a photographer friend, little ____(4 letters, 2nd is U from Struth), who was born in the country of _______(7 letters, 6th is the N from Ann), was a 4-legged companion to the famous artist ________(7 letters, 3rd is the C from Le Corbusier), who portrayed him in a series of paintings now housed in the city of ________(9 letters, 5th is the E from Belgium). |
