Well, I suppose that really depends on which particular site you're looking at...I've come across different spellings....one of which has 9 letters...my particular version of the old kingdom's name is from the site maintained by an American professor who specialises in this stuff.

Vlad Tepes Dracula was ruler of Wallachia (also Valachia, but I don't know how to bring it down to 7 letters)from 1456 to 1462 (also briefly in 1448 and 1476). Wallachia is now in Romania. He's known as Vlad III Dracula.

Do a little more searching cmt. Vlad III Dracula was not the name I was looking for....the other details are correct though....I'm looking for a name which includes the English translation of the name Tepes.

Vlad the Impaler?

ayakkadan May 23rd, 2006 10:17 AM

Absolutely! Your clue...[The spelling for the country I had in mind was Valahia].

ayakkadan May 25th, 2006 07:47 AM

No fair cmt. Where's the clue??

cmt May 26th, 2006 10:02 AM

I'll get to, it this weekend. The weekend starts in just three hours.

In just a little more than a month, this game will have been running for three years. Someone started the first thread in July 2003. I don't think the person who started it still posts here.

A foreign affairs figure is making an official visit to another country for the first time. The name of the foreign affairs person making this visit contains five letters in the first name and five letters in the last name. Third letter of the last name is the “v” from Vlad; third letter of the first name is the “i” from Impaler. The country picked for this first visit has six letters, and its capital also has six letters. At the same time, monarchs of another six-letter country are also visiting this same country.

Name the following:
1. name of the foreign affairs figure making a first official foreign visit
2. country visited on that first official foreign visit
3. capital city of the country visited
4. home country of the monarchs who are also officially visiting the country that’s the answer to #2

Important figure (first = 2 letters, second = 6 letters) from this WWII movement (movement = 9 letters) who died tragically in 1943.

Numerous places in his home country were named after him, including a university in the gastronomic city of (city = 4 letters).

Last name of figure ends in "n," as does the last name of the gastronomic city.

111op May 29th, 2006 06:25 AM

The first name of the figure also ends in "n."

cmt May 29th, 2006 06:52 AM

That was quick! Yes, except it's Tzipi.

111op May 29th, 2006 07:05 AM

Sorry.

Well, it's easy enough when people give a current events clue: I just typed "first foreign visit" into news.google.com.

I assume that that doesn't invalidate my clue though.

111op May 29th, 2006 07:10 AM

I made a typo in my clue -- the first name of the figure has 4 letters and the last name of the figure has 6 letters.

Sorry about that. There's only one person referred to in the clue.

cmt May 29th, 2006 09:03 AM

Are all the other letter counts correct (the movement, etc.)? The reason I ask is that I'm totally stuck.

111op May 29th, 2006 10:18 AM

My apologies: I think the movement has 10 letters.

That's what happens when I get the day off and my brain isn't quite functioning.

The last name is a meaningful word in a foreign language. The word + color is where some tourists flock in a certain city. That's also the name of a fairly recent movie.

cmt May 29th, 2006 10:27 AM

Oh, then in that case: Jean Moulin, of the Resistance, and the city is Lyon.

111op May 29th, 2006 10:32 AM

Yes. Don't wait too long before you give us the next clue.

I got the idea for this clue because I saw the Melville movie "Army of Shadows" over the weekend. It's enjoying a limited revival in the US.

Nine letters. The penultimate is the "n" from Moulin.

This nine-letter name, preceded by "La," is the name of a church. It is also part of the name of a candy/confection, which is crafted into a wide variety of realistic and imaginative shapes.

The church is in a city that has seven letters in its name (4th is the "e" from Jean).

The church is named after someone whose first name had six letters (2nd was the "L" from Moulin).

The candy is made from a natural product that has seven letters (in the plural) in English (4th is the "o" from Moulin).

Name:
1. the church
2. the city
3. the person the church is named after
4. the main ingredient in the confection (other than sugar)
