In March this year, my husband and I went to Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary. A friend of mine's father works and lives in Kosice, Slovakia, so we met her there. Her dad's driver took us to various cities in Slovakia, which we absolutely loved! Talk about a good deal for the dollar! The meals, treatment and sites were dirt cheap! We're already booked for Dec. to London on a special deal at Christmas. We try to go twice a year at least. We live below our means in Chicago so that we never go into debt to travel. I envy those who can stay abroad for longer than 10 days at a time!

EnglishOne,

I do recall and was glad it turned out so well. You always hold your breath after giving hints and hope for the best.

I bet you do get your fair share of crowds being so close to a major attraction. Curious as to when the last time was you walked 'round the castle yourself? I'm originally from St. Louis and locals there are notorious for never stepping foot inside the local attraction (Gateway Arch - the giant silver croquet wicket) unless we were hosting out of town guests. Not sure why, as it was always fun once we went! Odd the way we see our own homes.

Went to Paris in the winter, then to London in March, will return to Paris in August, Italy in Sept/Oct. and Nice in November. We retired a couple of years ago and always said we intended to travel. Every time we hear of friends becoming ill or dying it just strengthens our resolve and we sign up for another trip--although we also book just for the fun of it. It's our dream and we're living it as long and as much as we can.

The last time I went to Leeds Castle, which is just up the road (actually, it was the first and last time!), it was about 3 years ago and we went to the hot air balloon festival - great fun, seeing all the weird and wonderful shapes and sizes, eg. giant Thomas the Tank Engine train, Bertie Bassett, strawberry shaped balloons etc. We even went inside the castle alongside the tourists, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nearly went last weekend as the band Simply Red were playing there, but couldnt get tickets! Apart from that, we NEVER visit any attractions in this area - there is some nice old architectural sights and ancient buildings - but as you say, you dont bother in your own home town usually.

Having said that, I do like a few day trips further afield out and about in Kent, like going to Rye or down the coast.
