PS: When I lived in Los Angeles, it was uncommon to see anybody on a train or bus except people too poor to afford Negresco.

I can't imagine bothering to get all dressed up and then --- going to Monaco? Too much trouble for so little fun.

DH and I are ending a cruise and will have all our formal wear with us anyway, so we thought it would be nice to dress up for the casino. Different strokes for different folks.

If you are going to a place that requires tux and evening dress most people eitherr use their own car or take a cab/car service. Assuming that they are going to a place that is very expensive usually the cost of a taxi wouldn;t be a problem.

We generally dress that way only for a formal wedding or another formal event (museum fundraiser, organization annual dinner etc) - but being in Manhattan we usually use a car service since the cab may not be very clean.

However, in England I have seen people dressed formally on a train (from Oxford to London) - apparently for some sort of similar event.

It's a scream that poor people ride the bus in Toronto. No wonder you're excited about cabbing to Monaco.

You know what would be lol! Since you and DH don't need those old duds -- you won't be wearing them on another cruise next year, out of fashion i hope! -- how about just pitching them overboard and going naked as jaybirds? (Except hide your cash well.)

The train is very easy from Nice to Monaco for about 5 Euros. The bus is even easier for 1 Euro! You are correct that the bus stops running at about 20:00 and the train at 22:00. Compromise and take the train or bus there and then just grab a taxi for about 70-80 Euros on the way back. Do not drive (drunk or sober) on the Corniche at night unless you want to end up like Grace Kelly.

Taxis are very expensive here - i'd allow at least 80 euros for trip to monaco and it could easily be 150 back

anita63 -you said bus was not an option but maybe this will be useful to other travellers.

On a thursday, friday and saturday night [plus the night before a public holiday], there are special night buses along the coast from Menton to cannes which essentially take people to and from nights out

the noctambus 100 for Nice-Monaco-Menton and stops in between costs one euro -last bus from monaco to Nice is around 4am

Bond movies have really created a myth about how people dress in such establishments. Most of the people that you will see there are from Russia and the Gulf countries in any case. I don't know if it is a good idea to hang out with that crowd.

I agree with kerouac, I don't think anyone wears a tux and long gown to the casino anymore. Dress slacks for the men and maybe a sports jacket and a dress or nice slacks and top/jacket for the ladies will be fine. I think if you end up dressed to the "nines", you may feel out of place.

Jacket is required in the evenings for men in the casino.

Unfortunately, people seldom , if ever, feel the need to dress up anymore. Fifty years go, tux and long gowns would probably have been <I> de riguer </I> but today young women wear p.j.s down to breakfast in B&Bs or even to the mall, flip flops, tank tops, sweatshirts and jeans seem to be acceptable almost anywhere. Dress nicely just don't over do it.

I agree that it's hard to find people that 'dress' properly anymore...my pet peeve is how some people dress on flights...eegads!

anita - on the subject of dress [sorry if I digress a bit] just got back from DD's graduation, for which I dressed quite formally [jacket, skirt, tights] fearing that I would be alone in this. not a bit of it. jeans and general sloppiness were in the minority even amongst the students. we have lovely photos of DD, her friends, and their parents, all in their finery.

but if you are horrified by what people wear on planes, you should see what they wear to come to court! especially in the summer.

We just returned from Nice a few weeks ago. Our cab from Monaco to the airport in Nice was $90EU. OUCH! It seemed to be a fixed fare regardless of the time of day or traffic. The rate was posted in our hotel room literature. I thought it was general cost but, clearly that wasn't so. Our flight was at 7:30am & we left the hotel at 4:45am. There was NO traffic and we arrived at the airport in about a half hour I believe.

Thanks, ILUVPARIS, I appreciate the current info. Although I don't mind spending money on certain things, I was having a really hard time getting my head around a half hour cab fare costing me $120 CAD. Freakin extortion!

I ended up getting a pkg. 'deal' (and I use that term loosly) that will include 1 night at the Negresco, 2 breakfasts, transfer from the port (I arrive via cruise, last stop is Nice) to the hotel and then transfer from hotel to the airport the next day for $820 CAD. I just about choked considering that the cab fare is eating up almost half that cost.

For those who offered up opinions about how to get myself from Nice to Monaco for a night at the casino, we decided to splurge, after watching too many james bond movies, and we are taking the helicopter to Monaco and then private transfer back. I'm sure I'm paying October's mortgage at the Palace, but oh well. You only live once.
