Cab Fare between Nice and Monaco
Has anyone in the recent past taken a cab from Nice to Monaco? If so, what was the cost?
We are in Nice one night and wish to go to the casino in Monaco so we need to go from Nice-Monaco-Nice...maybe someone has done this through private transfer or something? Bus is not an option as we will be dressed up to the nines :) Thanks in advance! |
If no one comes up with an answer you can ask your hotel to arrange transfers.
Have fun. |
Thanks, SeaUrchin, I did that already and they gave me an incredibly high price...I think they thought I wanted to BUY Monaco not GO to Monaco!
|
Oh no, those rats, probably getting a kickback from the service.
The cab rate shouldn't be too much. I am surprised no one here has come up with an answer. It might pay to rent a car for a day and not have to think about cabs, etc. |
I thought the Nice cab driver told me last summer it was around €70 from downtown Nice to Monte Carlo during the day. I did not end up taking it, but I wanted an estimate just in case I had to do this by taxi. The night rate would be higher.
|
If you don;t want to spring for a cab have you thought about the train?
|
Hmmm...a car rental...that might be a good idea! Although our last trip to Paris 2 years ago, DH drove a stick for the first time since his army days and took on the round about at Champs des Elysees...still haven't quite recovered from that.
I digress... Nytraveler, we're going to be in a tux and gown and didn't want to do bus or train. Maybe rethinking wardrobe is in order. Anyone familliar with Negresco...mixed reviews?? Thanks again, all..you are great! |
I can't understand why you've got this hangup aboput wearing evening dress onto a bus or train.
Trains don't have dress codes you know. How else do people get to posh operas or royal garden parties where you live? |
What an odd request when the commuter train only takes a few minutes for 3.40€.
However, if you are dressed up, perhaps it will please you to spend a fortune for nothing. |
Well, Flanneruk, I have no idea if you are kidding or not but I'll bite...
I live in Toronto and it is unheard of to wear a tux or gown on the train or bus. Maybe it's a location thing so it never occured to me that I wouldn't look like an idiot in a gown on a train from Nice to Monacco. And our trains, do in fact, have a dress code...you have to have shoes, shirt and bottom or you can't board. As for how people get to the opera or royal garden parties, you've got me there as I have never been to either, lol! |
Hi, anita,
I consulted my friend google, and s/he came up with this: http://wikitravel.org/en/Nice the bit about taxis is not encouraging from your point of view - giving €70 as the fare for Nice to Monaco. otherwise, buses apparently stop quite early, at about 8.30pm, and trains operate between 4.30am and midnight so if you stay long enough, you might get the first one in the morning back to Nice! wouldn't it just be easier [and cheaper] to stay in Monaco and walk? |
Oh yes, the Negresco which IMO is over-priced with a staff that clearly needs lessons in customer service. It has been a number of years since I was there so my rant may no longer be relevant. Specifically, I asked at the front desk (my daughter and I had just returned from an evening out) if they could arrange for a porter to pick up our bags in the morning. I was told no he couldn't do it and that I would have to call the porter from my room. Not the kind of service I expected form an expensive and top-rated hotel. They also had signs in the bathroom stating that if you took their robes with you, your credit card would charged for the amount of $$$. Tacky. I can't imagine that anyone who could afford to stay at the Negresco would be interested in a rather ordinary terry cloth robe, but I perhaps I'm a bit naive.
Restaurant overrated too. Maybe all has changed, but I won't return. I've stayed in far less expensive hotels and have been treated much better. |
anita -
flanner was being a bit naughty, but truly, people in europe do get on trains and buses in evening wear. I've done it frequently when going to and returning from concerts [usually but not always ones I've been performing in as I was in a choir,] and no-one turns a hair. |
You have to take into consideration if you will be drinking you shouldn't drive. If you are going to take a train you will have to be watching the clock for the last train. I think you will just have to take a prearranged cab. How much did the hotel quote for their service? If you will be there a few days beforehand you can most likely find a professional driver on your own without the hotel's cut added.
Here in Los Angeles it would be extremely uncommon to see someone in a tux or a gown on a train or a bus. It may be common in Nice, I have never seen it but then I haven't been in Monaco for nightlife, darn. Write us a report! |
The Monaco train station is extremely elegant, and I am surprised that a tux and evening gown are not <i>de rigueur</i>.
|
Have you taken any photos of it, kerouac? I would love to see it, I have always been in a car in Monaco.
Anita, are you going to the casino? |
Annhig, thank you for your insight regarding wearing a gown on public transportation! I would have NEVER thought that this could be done, but you have certainly steared my thinking in another direction, thanks! (BTW, I play flute in our local concert band. I've always envied people who could sing)!
Historytraveler, thanks for sharing your experience...i'm on the fence with staying there, but we'll see what happens. After a week on Silversea Cruise Line, I may just very well enjoy a no-tell-mo-tell,lol. Kerouac, you made me spit out my wine on my key board! LOL (it's ok, I got a straw). SeaUrchin, you make a good point about drinking and driving...although we would never dream of doing that, we would prefer to have a drink (see straw comment)which means renting a car isn't a good idea. I think you're right...just bite the bullet and pay for a pre-arranged vehicle. I got two quotes: First one was 535 Euro's for 5 hours (drive there, a drive around Moneco, wait for us while in casino, then drive back). The other quote was $135 euro one way with a quick tour, but no waiting for us! Thanks, everyone for your terrific insight and comments...always appreciate learning something new! |
Are the train and bus stations in Monte Carolo near the casino??
|
I don't think that the stations are near the casino. I seem to recall that there is a steep walk involved, but maybe I'm remembering wrong (over 23 years ago).
I'm thinking a cab and that's that. I'm just cheap at heart and didn't want to spend alot on transport :) |
I've worn formal gowns on New York subways many, many times, and have seen many others do it as well -- at all hours of the day, mind you.
|
PS: When I lived in Los Angeles, it was uncommon to see anybody on a train or bus except people too poor to afford Negresco.
I can't imagine bothering to get all dressed up and then --- going to Monaco? Too much trouble for so little fun. |
Zeppole, it's interesting how different things can be from part of the world to another, eh?
And, in Toronto, the night riders are pretty much those who like you've described, lol. DH and I are ending a cruise and will have all our formal wear with us anyway, so we thought it would be nice to dress up for the casino. Different strokes for different folks. |
If you are going to a place that requires tux and evening dress most people eitherr use their own car or take a cab/car service. Assuming that they are going to a place that is very expensive usually the cost of a taxi wouldn;t be a problem.
We generally dress that way only for a formal wedding or another formal event (museum fundraiser, organization annual dinner etc) - but being in Manhattan we usually use a car service since the cab may not be very clean. However, in England I have seen people dressed formally on a train (from Oxford to London) - apparently for some sort of similar event. |
Well, gosh, anita, ain't it! It's almost like --well, why people travel, gosh darn it! Because different parts of the world are different. Whodda thunk!
It's a scream that poor people ride the bus in Toronto. No wonder you're excited about cabbing to Monaco. You know what would be lol! Since you and DH don't need those old duds -- you won't be wearing them on another cruise next year, out of fashion i hope! -- how about just pitching them overboard and going naked as jaybirds? (Except hide your cash well.) |
Tsk, NYTraveler and Zeppole...you guys assume that just because I HAVE the money that I am willing to SPEND my money...nope!
Pretty much a cheapo at heart for somethings. LOL...naked as a Jay bird...maybe! |
The train is very easy from Nice to Monaco for about 5 Euros. The bus is even easier for 1 Euro! You are correct that the bus stops running at about 20:00 and the train at 22:00. Compromise and take the train or bus there and then just grab a taxi for about 70-80 Euros on the way back. Do not drive (drunk or sober) on the Corniche at night unless you want to end up like Grace Kelly.
|
Thanks, Casey...good advice! I like your frugal thinking :)
|
the last train from Monaco to Nice is at 2 mins to midnight -23.58 and takes 23 mins
Taxis are very expensive here - i'd allow at least 80 euros for trip to monaco and it could easily be 150 back |
anita63 -you said bus was not an option but maybe this will be useful to other travellers.
On a thursday, friday and saturday night [plus the night before a public holiday], there are special night buses along the coast from Menton to cannes which essentially take people to and from nights out the noctambus 100 for Nice-Monaco-Menton and stops in between costs one euro -last bus from monaco to Nice is around 4am http://www.cg06.fr/cms/cg06/upload/s...tambus_100.pdf |
SelkieNice...that is usefull information, thank you!
|
Nevertheless, even though you will be having fun, you will be overdressed. James Bond movies ha
|
Bond movies have really created a myth about how people dress in such establishments. Most of the people that you will see there are from Russia and the Gulf countries in any case. I don't know if it is a good idea to hang out with that crowd.
|
I agree with kerouac, I don't think anyone wears a tux and long gown to the casino anymore. Dress slacks for the men and maybe a sports jacket and a dress or nice slacks and top/jacket for the ladies will be fine. I think if you end up dressed to the "nines", you may feel out of place.
|
Jacket is required in the evenings for men in the casino.
|
Really? But everything I've ever learned is from a james bond movie! DAMN!
Thanks for the heads up on dress code...was really hoping to get one more use out of the long gown and tux that we're wearing on the cruise, but now you've got me thinking. Thanks for the info~ |
Unfortunately, people seldom , if ever, feel the need to dress up anymore. Fifty years go, tux and long gowns would probably have been <I> de riguer </I> but today young women wear p.j.s down to breakfast in B&Bs or even to the mall, flip flops, tank tops, sweatshirts and jeans seem to be acceptable almost anywhere. Dress nicely just don't over do it.
|
Thanks, Historytraveler...yes, I'm going to nix the gown idea and switch to a simple cocktail dress.
I agree that it's hard to find people that 'dress' properly anymore...my pet peeve is how some people dress on flights...eegads! |
anita - on the subject of dress [sorry if I digress a bit] just got back from DD's graduation, for which I dressed quite formally [jacket, skirt, tights] fearing that I would be alone in this. not a bit of it. jeans and general sloppiness were in the minority even amongst the students. we have lovely photos of DD, her friends, and their parents, all in their finery.
but if you are horrified by what people wear on planes, you should see what they wear to come to court! especially in the summer. |
We just returned from Nice a few weeks ago. Our cab from Monaco to the airport in Nice was $90EU. OUCH! It seemed to be a fixed fare regardless of the time of day or traffic. The rate was posted in our hotel room literature. I thought it was general cost but, clearly that wasn't so. Our flight was at 7:30am & we left the hotel at 4:45am. There was NO traffic and we arrived at the airport in about a half hour I believe.
|
Thanks, ILUVPARIS, I appreciate the current info. Although I don't mind spending money on certain things, I was having a really hard time getting my head around a half hour cab fare costing me $120 CAD. Freakin extortion!
I ended up getting a pkg. 'deal' (and I use that term loosly) that will include 1 night at the Negresco, 2 breakfasts, transfer from the port (I arrive via cruise, last stop is Nice) to the hotel and then transfer from hotel to the airport the next day for $820 CAD. I just about choked considering that the cab fare is eating up almost half that cost. For those who offered up opinions about how to get myself from Nice to Monaco for a night at the casino, we decided to splurge, after watching too many james bond movies, and we are taking the helicopter to Monaco and then private transfer back. I'm sure I'm paying October's mortgage at the Palace, but oh well. You only live once. |
