Cab Fare between Nice and Monaco
 

Has anyone in the recent past taken a cab from Nice to Monaco? If so, what was the cost?

We are in Nice one night and wish to go to the casino in Monaco so we need to go from Nice-Monaco-Nice...maybe someone has done this through private transfer or something?

Bus is not an option as we will be dressed up to the nines :)

If no one comes up with an answer you can ask your hotel to arrange transfers.

The cab rate shouldn't be too much. I am surprised no one here has come up with an answer.

It might pay to rent a car for a day and not have to think about cabs, etc.

I thought the Nice cab driver told me last summer it was around €70 from downtown Nice to Monte Carlo during the day. I did not end up taking it, but I wanted an estimate just in case I had to do this by taxi. The night rate would be higher.

If you don;t want to spring for a cab have you thought about the train?

Hmmm...a car rental...that might be a good idea! Although our last trip to Paris 2 years ago, DH drove a stick for the first time since his army days and took on the round about at Champs des Elysees...still haven't quite recovered from that.

I digress...

Nytraveler, we're going to be in a tux and gown and didn't want to do bus or train. Maybe rethinking wardrobe is in order.

Anyone familliar with Negresco...mixed reviews??

I can't understand why you've got this hangup aboput wearing evening dress onto a bus or train.

Trains don't have dress codes you know. How else do people get to posh operas or royal garden parties where you live?

What an odd request when the commuter train only takes a few minutes for 3.40€.

However, if you are dressed up, perhaps it will please you to spend a fortune for nothing.

Well, Flanneruk, I have no idea if you are kidding or not but I'll bite...

I live in Toronto and it is unheard of to wear a tux or gown on the train or bus. Maybe it's a location thing so it never occured to me that I wouldn't look like an idiot in a gown on a train from Nice to Monacco.

And our trains, do in fact, have a dress code...you have to have shoes, shirt and bottom or you can't board. As for how people get to the opera or royal garden parties, you've got me there as I have never been to either,lol!

the bit about taxis is not encouraging from your point of view - giving €70 as the fare for Nice to Monaco. otherwise, buses apparently stop quite early, at about 8.30pm, and trains operate between 4.30am and midnight so if you stay long enough, you might get the first one in the morning back to Nice!

Oh yes, the Negresco which IMO is over-priced with a staff that clearly needs lessons in customer service. It has been a number of years since I was there so my rant may no longer be relevant. Specifically, I asked at the front desk (my daughter and I had just returned from an evening out) if they could arrange for a porter to pick up our bags in the morning. I was told no he couldn't do it and that I would have to call the porter from my room. Not the kind of service I expected form an expensive and top-rated hotel. They also had signs in the bathroom stating that if you took their robes with you, your credit card would charged for the amount of $$$. Tacky. I can't imagine that anyone who could afford to stay at the Negresco would be interested in a rather ordinary terry cloth robe, but I perhaps I'm a bit naive.

Restaurant overrated too.

Maybe all has changed, but I won't return. I've stayed in far less expensive hotels and have been treated much better.

flanner was being a bit naughty, but truly, people in europe do get on trains and buses in evening wear. I've done it frequently when going to and returning from concerts [usually but not always ones I've been performing in as I was in a choir,] and no-one turns a hair.

You have to take into consideration if you will be drinking you shouldn't drive. If you are going to take a train you will have to be watching the clock for the last train. I think you will just have to take a prearranged cab. How much did the hotel quote for their service? If you will be there a few days beforehand you can most likely find a professional driver on your own without the hotel's cut added.

Here in Los Angeles it would be extremely uncommon to see someone in a tux or a gown on a train or a bus. It may be common in Nice, I have never seen it but then I haven't been in Monaco for nightlife, darn. Write us a report!

The Monaco train station is extremely elegant, and I am surprised that a tux and evening gown are not <i>de rigueur</i>.

Have you taken any photos of it, kerouac? I would love to see it, I have always been in a car in Monaco.

Annhig, thank you for your insight regarding wearing a gown on public transportation! I would have NEVER thought that this could be done, but you have certainly steared my thinking in another direction, thanks! (BTW, I play flute in our local concert band. I've always envied people who could sing)!

Historytraveler, thanks for sharing your experience...i'm on the fence with staying there, but we'll see what happens. After a week on Silversea Cruise Line, I may just very well enjoy a no-tell-mo-tell,lol.

SeaUrchin, you make a good point about drinking and driving...although we would never dream of doing that, we would prefer to have a drink (see straw comment)which means renting a car isn't a good idea. I think you're right...just bite the bullet and pay for a pre-arranged vehicle. I got two quotes: First one was 535 Euro's for 5 hours (drive there, a drive around Moneco, wait for us while in casino, then drive back). The other quote was $135 euro one way with a quick tour, but no waiting for us!

Are the train and bus stations in Monte Carolo near the casino??

I don't think that the stations are near the casino. I seem to recall that there is a steep walk involved, but maybe I'm remembering wrong (over 23 years ago).

I'm thinking a cab and that's that. I'm just cheap at heart and didn't want to spend alot on transport :)

I've worn formal gowns on New York subways many, many times, and have seen many others do it as well -- at all hours of the day, mind you.
