I know this is a girly thread, but what is it with women and Colin Firth? I just don't see the attraction. I guess I need to be a girl - its a bit like most women thinking most men fancy Julia Roberts!!

It's the character he plays in most of his parts -- strong, yet vulnerable, in need of a good woman and being able to recognize a good woman, whatever the flaws. Is perceptive to assured, receptive, responsive woman of substance, even with 4 alcohol units, 19 cigarettes and 0 gym visits.

What more can a girl ask for?

And you're right about Julia Roberts. We all think guys think she's really something, but my husband just can't get past the "big teeth".

Caroline: I had friends who lived on Mona Road and Hunter House Road! I lived on Marlborough Road in Broomhill, Barber Road in Crooksmoor and Wilkinson Street and Filey Street in Broomhall. God, all these street names bring back memories!

Tallulah : yes, they certainly do ! Did your friend live in 'big Mona' or 'little Mona' ? The latter had a great community atmosphere with regular street trips for a night out in Derbyshire & stuff.

Caroline: I think they were on 'big' Mona but I don't have the best memory in the world! Do you go back there at all? I haven't been back for a few years now as most people have moved away. I always found it such a friendly place; my best friend was in Leeds and I hated going there because it always seemed that the locals really hated the students... (apologies to anyone reading this from Leeds, just my personal opinion!)

Tallulah : yes, I still have friends there, so get back occasionally. I actually had my hen weekend there (only 4 years ago) as it is more or less in the middle of the country so everyone could get to it. Of course, they don't have the Scottish licensing laws, though... :-)

cigale: correction, that wasn't Colin Firth in Equus but Peter Firth -- who made a small mark in film about 25 years ago, then seems to have disappeared.

More generally: How can Colin Firth be so appealing to so many posters, when he has zero sense of humour?

What if the brooding, uncommunicative type aren't just waiting for the "right girl" to open up to? What if they're just uncommunicative?

You know, tedgale, you have just helped me figure out why I always like Hugh Grant better than anyone else. He has a wonderful sense of humor, both in his roles and seemingly in real life.

The poor girl had the bad luck to be cast opposite Firth in "Girl with a Pearl Earring", which was a beautifully shot but slow European flick. He played Johannes Vermeer as ... well, as Colin Firth. Two long hours of a look which I guess was meant to convey smouldering lust, or artistic torture, or both, but to me looked more like a bloke who's just discovered something horrible in his soup.

wasn't Scarlett J. excellent in the Vermeer film? She is very versatile so far.

I do like both Colin and Hugh, but they are each pretty much the same in every film. There's something to be said for doing one thing very very well (Cary Grant, most of the time, for example) but a little versatility would be nice to see. I did once see Hugh, pre-stardom, in costume and wig, in a television version of
one of the bloody Ford or Webster potboilers in verse, and he was quite different.

And a really interesting film, especially now imo, is about 20 years old, "Another Country" starring Rupert Everett and a very young Colin. About English public schools and a bit of a implied prequel, though fiction, to the
Mclean-Philby-Burgess spy scandal of the 50s.

Well, Marilyn, since RS is married, I will just have to settle for Mr. Blackstone, I think it's pretty safe to say, he's not married !!
