Apartments in Paris

My husband and I are traveling to Paris for the first time. Since we plan to stay for a week in the city we thought an apartment would be a good way to to do it. I like what I've seen on Lodgis.com but am not familiar with the company. Has anyone had experience with them? If so what did you think? Any other recommendations of companies would be appreciated.

Michel_Paris Sep 26th, 2007 12:52 PM

I'd say do a search here on paris appartments. There is a ton of companies and recommendations that I've seen.

Take a look at the reviews of Paris apartments and rental agencies at www.slowtrav.com.

My Mom and I went in May and stayed in an apt in Montmartre that I found on Craigslist. You might have a look there (http://paris.craigslist.org/). The apt we found was being rented by a gentleman in NYC, so the transaction took place in US currency and was seamless :) Good luck! Apts are DEFINITELY the way to go!

Flook Sep 27th, 2007 03:18 PM

Thank you everyone for your ideas. Sometimed there are simply too many options out there!

lucyp Sep 28th, 2007 12:57 PM

Hi, my husband and I rented an apartment last Fall in the 5th through Lodgis.com and we found them easy to deal with. The apartment was fabulous and our security deposit was returned with no problems. m

Thanks for asking this Flook, I needed to know this myself.

littlehouse Sep 29th, 2007 11:38 AM

Okay having never been to Paris, what districts does everyone recommend? I see that a lot of folks pick the 5th and 6th, is that because they are centrally located? So is the 7th district not a good pick? I figured being near the Eiffel Tower would be central, is this wrong?

Thanks so much!! I'm looking at apartments as well so hopefully this will help Flook and I both.

Many posters like 4th; my preference is 6th close to 7th (or the other way around)

janisj Sep 30th, 2007 03:36 PM

Littlehouse: "I figured being near the Eiffel Tower would be central, is this wrong?"

Look a map of central Paris and you will see that the Eiffel Tower is not in the middle.

"central Paris" for tourists really stretches from the Eiffel Tower/Arc de Triumphe on the west, to Ile St Louis/Bastille on the east. The Louvre/Musee d' Orsay are about dead center.

Of course you will go to the Eiffel Tower - but it the 7th is a fairly quiet area and you will be visiting many more sites in other areas.

That is why many people prefer the 4th, 5th and 6th. They are more in the center and you'd be walking distance to many more sites. But there are nice neighborhoods in just about any arr.

Thanks jan--
That helps a lot. When you have never been to a city it's those little tidbits that help so much!!

Having been to Paris in the past and having stayed in hotels, for our visit in July 2007 we rented an apartment on
Ile St Louis. I would never stay in
a Paris hotel again! Well, maybe the Ritz!

We were lucky to find an apartment overlooking the Seine. We found it through the owner's own site, not an agency.

Email me for the url if you're interested.

Bonne chance!

Rob

Okay Rob I sent you an email. Thanks for your help.

cheryllj Oct 1st, 2007 01:57 PM

The 7th isn't a *bad* place to stay - I've stayed there once and it was fine for my needs. It's just that it's mostly residential and was dead at night -- the streets were practically empty, especially compared to the *livelier* 5th and 6th, which are more youthful and energetic, with lots more bars, restaurants, etc. That's why most people recommend 4/5/6 for a first-timer to Paris. But if you want a quiet residential area that is also convenient to sights, the 7th is fine.

seafox Oct 5th, 2007 05:49 AM

parisvacationaprtments has several properties in Palais Royal right next to the Louvre. Th 1st is about as central as you can get and the other districts are an easy walk or 1 to 2 stop metro ride. It works for us.

littlehouse Oct 5th, 2007 01:54 PM

Thanks seafox, I'll check out that site and I may be back with questions on certain apartments.

littlehouse Oct 5th, 2007 02:01 PM

Okay looked at those but the ones in Palais Royal are out of our price range.

littlehouse,

What's your budget? You may get better recommendations by mentioning that.

And here's a link to a Paris Notes page on renting apartments. Scroll down the page and on the right-hand side you'll see a list of apartment rental agencies.

yes - doo give us a budget.

Here is another site w/ lots of apartments in Paris that tend to be less expensive than some of the agencies already mentioned. It is sort of like VRBO in that after your first contact through homelidays, you deal directly w/ the owners.

First, full disclosure. We own an apartment in Paris which we won't mention due to the forum rules. These places are not owned by us and are recommendations we make when our place is full.

1. Direct to owner - studios

Our favorite studio:

http://www.perfectparisrental.com/

http://www.vrbo.com/34170

2. Direct to owner - one bedroom

Doug and Mike's apartment on Ile Saint-Louis - you can contact them for more photos, etc. at : [email protected] . We've seen this apartment and it is very nice.

We have a client who has stayed here several times when our apartment was booked:

http://www.wewillalwayshaveparis.net/Home.htm

We haven't seen this directly but have exchanged emails with the owner

3. Two bedroom

1. Direct to owner - two bedroom

We know the previous owners of this apartment (they are from San Francisco, too!) and it is very nice

http://www.vrbo.com/34050

4. Three bedroom loft that is gorgeous

5. Agencies (we work with two of them and they are great to work with)

Bill: Very kind of you to provide such an extensive list from an "insiders" perspective.

I'm looking for something over the holidays and have just finished browsing each of your recommended sites (and sending off a few e-mails). They've been bookmarked, as well.

Thanks again!

I'd like to keep the budget under $1000 for the week. It doesn't have to be the ritz just clean and comfortable with a washer/dryer if possible.

kaz11 Oct 7th, 2007 03:06 PM

My husband and I stayed in this apartment in the 4th arrondissement in May, and it was great. Great location and the owner was very helpful and easy to deal with.

Check out Kaz's recommendation. I haven't rented from Parisbestlodge, but only because the apartments were not available for my time period. The owner replied promptly, and has received good recommendations on this site.

# 2 would be my first choice, followed by # 4 in 2nd place. Did you note that #5 is on the equivilent of the 5th floor w/ no elevator?

I vote for #2. Very central location. #1 is my second choice, but is not so central.

I'm a bit leery of the duplexes, #4 and #5. I can't tell if part of #4 is in the basement.

Christina Oct 11th, 2007 09:22 AM

I think the two by Vacationbyparis are questionable in terms of information and photos. I mean they are not forthcoming and try to hide things, which was my experience with that company. I don't think they list any sizes, for example. IN any case, I think the rue Cler one is awful and extremely overpriced. They don't have hardly any decent photos of it, and the bedroom, so to speak, is barely larger than the bed. The living room is barely furnished. The price is just really high for that. The one near St Honore looks pretty nice -- it has that funky bed in the kitchen which I think is really tacky, but that's what these rental apts do. Try to sleep people everywhere. I would't want to sleep anyone on that. But other than that, it looks a million times better than the rue Cler one.

I like the one on rue Mouffetard best, probably -- I've stayed near there and like the area and it is reasonably priced and looks okay.

I would never rent a ground floor apt myself, don't like them -- but even then, I'd be leery of that duplex thing, also. It's not clear what's on the ground floor, but I think it may be that the kitchen and bathroom are below ground (as there are no windows visible) and the other rooms ground floor. Hard to say.

We've discussed rue PEtit Musc before on here, several threads I think.

Our experience with VacationInParis was excellent. We rented a Marais apartment for a week in September and it was a great place. We'll definitely stay again in a heartbeat. We didn't discover anything that wasn't clearly set out beforehand.
