Anyone up for some armchair travel to Switzerland?
This time of year spouse and I would normally be getting ready for our annual winter pilgrimage to Switzerland.
Our MO is to travel to Switzerland early in December to take full advantage of the calm before the holiday ski season storm. We then usually head to Germany for a dose of Christmas Markets before returning home. There's already a great thread on Armchair Travel to Germany, so I thought I'd start one on Switzerland for those of us missing this beautiful country. Please join in. The more photos of Switzerland the better!https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e5e5448a12.jpg Guarda https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...62cf0850ce.jpg Guarda https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...83e1178a93.jpg Walking from Guarda to Ardez https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c0a4ede94b.jpg Vnà https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f1d1bec222.jpg Walking from Vnà to Hof Zourt https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...626c7ee3ec.jpg Chur https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ef3b3871a0.jpg Chur https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0a76c135fc.jpg Chur https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...514e96d7b8.jpg Chur |
Ah yes, December 2014...we traded the hot sticky white sand of Perth, Australia for the white winter wonderland of Switzerland. I can't remember the last time I was so excited to see schnee.

It is still a bit early but I see that people are getting into pre-Christmas mood already. So let me share one of my favourite events that takes place in Basel.
Every year around St Nicholas Day (Saturday closest to Dec 6, to be precise) the regional chapter of Harley Davidson club do a charity run known as "Harley Niggi Näggi". They dress up as Santa Clauses, decorate their bikes, and parade through the city to the main square, where they collect donations for a project that helps homeless people. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fb43cb4b44.jpg They are coming https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...29d1e96c1e.jpg They decorate their bikes with amazing imagination. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...55660e3237.jpg Ho - ho - ho! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3874429d12.jpg Mr. and Mrs. Claus https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1ce23a482e.jpg Santa and the angel - yes, they all wear helmets underneath https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ba800d4177.jpg How many Christmas trees fit on one Harley? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...158db49299.jpg How many reindeer... https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...636bd82c9b.jpg ... fit on one Harley? https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...47a205bec2.jpg "Harley Donkeyson" https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ab48ae3b66.jpg Another Santa took the waterway on the Rhine |

Perfect timing, Mel - I'm taking two days off since Wednesday is a holiday in my part of Germany :) Hm, which photos ... I'll start with a Davos/Saas Fee trip back in 1993. Pre-digital era, so please forgive the lousy quality of some photos.

Apparently Fodor's doesn't trust veteran posters if they post twice with a half dozen picture attachments within a couple of minutes. Sorry, folks, then no more pics for now. |
Good to see you here Ingo and Adelaidean!
Harley Niggi Näggi looks like a hoot quokka. Would love to see that in person. |

Thanks! And here’s a photo of someone we met on our March trip to Scuol. Not in a zoo or animal park, just hanging out in the lower village. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...aa7a3527b.jpeg |

Ahhh, I see my earlier post was approved by the moderators. |
Michael, of course you're right, Switzerland is not only about mountains. I plan to post some pics of the towns and plains later, too.
|
No, it's not all about the mountains, although personally, the mountains are a highlight for me.
It's also about the lakes... https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fe22998f43.jpg Hiking the Gemmipass The thrill rides... https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...162ccb8d50.jpg Cable car to Leukerbad The food... https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9a4461e023.jpg Älplermagronen And of course, the chocolate... https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2898061163.jpg Be still my heart |
Somehow I was doing OK without severe wanderlust through the pandemic but now you guys have gone and posted these!
Here's an offering from me from September, 2017 on a Tour du Mont Blanc. The TMB is mostly in France and Italy, on my version we spent two days in Switzerland. These were all taken within a few hours of my first Swiss hike. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5f9457aad5.jpg Looking into Valais from Grand Col Ferret https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d09309ecfb.jpg Yurt at Alpage de la Peule https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2dca63d3fb.jpg Lunch stop, Alpage de la Peule https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ff328779b7.jpg Why you gain weight even while doing a lot of hiking https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6f29af2745.jpg The valley of the Dranse de Ferret |

Hi Adelaidean, the pictures of Tarasp and Soglio and Bern etc. bring back so many wonderful memories! Last year we spent October in Switzerland, our first ever autumn visit. We'd planned to do it again this year, but couldn't of course. Nice to see you here zebec!
The owl photo reminds me of the day we were on a bus in Scuol...a guy gets on holding a falcon. Of course, I didn't have my camera at the ready so missed a great shot. Like Adelaidean, we feel lucky to see wildlife at all in Switzerland. Other than birds, all we've seen is chamois (once). No shortage of cows, goats and sheep though:) And of course those lovely Swiss cats. |
