Fascinating, Michael.
Mel, I went back through the Facebook photos of October of a St Moritz resident the day after an October snowfall, so beautiful. So..not my photos... https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a13def5ca.jpeg Silas Baselgia https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1907787c0.jpeg Champfersee |

zebec -
And the Laderach and the Teuscher (champagne truffles in particular). twk - I have some remarkably similar photos from Gruyeres and Cailler. I must have consumed a million calories that day, and then we returned the next day for another cheese orgy. |
We've been to Switzerland, in Mrs Z's case many times, but not yet to Austria. Would luv to hear all your comparisons between the two nations, in all senses (ease of carless travel, food, weather, whatever), but especially regarding the availability of good inter-village walk opportunities as shown say, in Mel & Ade's above fotos.
I am done. The curious Z. |
Did someone mention Teuscher?
https://flic.kr/p/a61zmr |
Ah, Austria...
Similar to Germany in some ways. Easy to get around by train and bus, although I find the ÖBB site and kiosks more difficult to navigate than in Germany or Switzerland. Reasonably priced accommodation and food. Great hiking opportunities. Fabulous lakes in the Salzkammergut. Here are a few photos from my last two trips to Austria. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fd1aa82441.jpg Innsbruck https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...593f7e75cd.jpg Seefeld https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c1cee6f9a8.jpg Innsbruck https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d4a2f6e241.jpg Hallstatt https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3b9a4fa6c5.jpg Topenstrudel https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...54ecf7e250.jpg Untersberg, Salzburg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0784175487.jpg Salzburg |
Michael -
I'm a serious chocoholic. When we lived in Indonesia, I'd make food shopping trips to Singapore every couple of months and every time, without fail, I'd walk from my hotel to Teuscher and treat myself to a couple of champagne truffles. I'd eat them in the shop so they wouldn't melt the minute I stepped out the door. They were about $5 a bite, so I had to control myself. I've visited several chocolate factories in Switzerland, but have yet to make it to Teuscher. We went out of our way to visit Laderach in October 2019 and I was in chocolate heaven. |

zebec we considered Austria for last September’s trip, but decided on north Italy... a great choice.
Villages, mountains, lakes, food, ... My TR here if you’re interested https://www.fodors.com/community/eur...italy-1672451/ |
Thx Ade, I recall your Tre Cime shot from before, a fantastic image that captures a sense of moody mystery.
And by all means, lets see more of Switzerland here. The smaller villages are fascinating. I am done. The yodel. |
Wowee! I am so flattered to be invited to post Swiss photos with you stellar Swiss fans and photographers! I have something like a couple dozen million photos of Switzerland, but strangely enough, they're all the same. Lakes. I'll post some of my favorites --

Various people post dozens of photos every day.... Sign on if you dare. |
Brilliant lake shots, swandav, as expected from you ;-)

Switzerland is not only mountains and landscapes, amazing as they are. Cities and towns deserve a closer look, too. Here is a hidden gem on the outskirts of Basel: Arlesheim
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c07ea449fe.jpg Arlesheim has a beautiful baroque church known as the Dom, and indeed, it was built as the cathedral when the Bishops of Basel were kicked out of the city and sought refuge here. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c4c51252f2.jpg The town hall of Arlesheim https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3f54bd1f29.jpg The former wine press building is now used as a cultural centre for exhibitions, concerts and other events. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2e3dd1ad06.jpg Next-door neighbour: the Goetheanum in adjacent Dornach, centre of Anthroposophism, https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...670d993108.jpg The castle on the hilltop is part of Eremitage, an English landscape park designed in the early 1800's. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...721faa4bac.jpg The so-called Eremitage is an English landscape garden, designed for a local noble family. It extends into a side valley, with a row of artificial ponds at the bottom and forest on the slopes. Nature mingles with artificial design. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bd4aad32e4.jpg The former park is now a nature reserve with many wildflowers and wildlife who like this habitat. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e903845ae1.jpg The castle is artificial, as is the stork nest on top of the keep. Even the stork is made of metal. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c6a509f1b9.jpg The hermit's chapel https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c8b40bff9f.jpg The grotto with its little fountain is a cool place to relax on hot days. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4d127c6946.jpg Then, suddenly, we heard cow bells. This little Swiss paradise is complete with a herd of cows, a bull and their calves grazing in lush meadows... |
Beautiful photos neckervd.
The trail to Oberaletsch Hut looks like a doozy. |

Thank you for starting this thread, the pictures are stunning!

DK Eyewitness have just published Unforgettable Journeys: slow down and see the World. In its 'On Foot' section, there are descriptions of both the Eiger and the Appenzell Whisky trails. Tre Cime also.

Whisky trails? How have I missed those?
