They want us to read the adverts and they have succeeded. Remember this is a FREE site and we are their GUESTS. Kind of like travel, non?

Dejais Apr 26th, 2005 09:38 AM

I understand why it is there but I do not have to like it.

Spygirl Apr 26th, 2005 09:42 AM

and of course, Fodor's gets nothing at all from its "guests" does it? I mean, that's why no Fodor's editors ever come on the boards and ask for information themselves, or ever use that information they get from their "guests" right????

Like SusanP said, these websites cost money to run. You can hardly blame them for wanting to get some return on their investment. Would you prefer them to switch over to a system of paid membership, as some other message boards have done? Do the kind Fodors folks a favor and click on the ads every once in a while; I imagine they get paid at least partly based on click-throughs.

NotMe Apr 26th, 2005 10:25 AM

I guess I'm missing what you folks are seeing. I thought maybe it was the browser that I am using, but I now think it must be either my pop up blocker or anti-spyware software that is keeping the ads from showing up.

rex Apr 26th, 2005 10:30 AM

Quite interesting to read all this discontent over something tht I am not seeing. I must REALLY have my computer "armor-clad" now (I have been plagued by spyware, and I have layers on top of layers of "permission required to access" protection now - -Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta, Adorons (SpyHunter), ewido, and Yahoo anti-pop-up... though turning off the Yahoo isn't making any difference)...

So... anyhow... there apparently IS a (or are) way(s) to prevent this appearing on your screen - - though I am not entirely sure WHY I am not seeing what is plaguing the rest of you!

Best wishes,

Rex

I agree with HowardR--get over it.

Tiff Apr 26th, 2005 10:53 AM

I was just a lil scared of the dragon is all, getting used to him now, have names him "Puff" - no insult intended to Bali.

I hope everyone can 'hear' all the sarcasm in my posts, you can't really think I am serious.

After all, not even dragons could keep me away from reading all the expert advice from you good people.

Now go forth and multiply, T.

Intrepid1 Apr 26th, 2005 10:54 AM

Please pay VERY close attention to how these Expedia people are dressed since that is the way you must dress the next time you travel to Europe so you can "fit in." Otherwise, they will turn you away at the border.

Intrepid1 Apr 26th, 2005 10:56 AM

Rex, the reason you aren't seeing it is because they were afraid you would tell them it is their "first time here...." etc. <LOL>

FainaAgain Apr 26th, 2005 11:08 AM

Good grief! If Rex can't see it - he can't post a link to prove it's been here before!

It is the most annoying thing Fodor's has done, but they do call the shots. Does not mean we can't hate it.

elaine Apr 26th, 2005 11:16 AM

what bothers me is not so much the ad itself, but that it blocks text that I'm trying to read, and whether I right click or left click on it, there's seemingly no way to close it or delete it
It also produced error messages for me on some threads

sheila Apr 26th, 2005 11:20 AM

I don't like them but I can live with them. There is one for Marriott tho' that rollls across the text. That is REALLY unacceptable

Would thos of you who can't see them please tell us a) what browser you're using and b) what anti-pop-up soft ware you're rusing.

Thanks.

spygirl - there is a Fodor's Editor who has posted on the Africa/Middle East Board - he/she is off to Egypt shortly, from "our" advise.

These ads weren't there this morning... but this afternoon that just hit you in the face. The one (whichever it is) that scrolls left across the text is most annoying.

Sent an email to the Editors to "kindly remove" - there's more than enough advertising on this site. I'm not banking on it, but let's see if they listed to feedback!

Sheila,
I'm not seeing any ads.
I'm using IE 6 as my browser and my pop up stopper is courtesy of my Nortons Utilities program.

Well I see the ads on the right side of the screen.

But the most annoying to me is how much slower Fodors site is now.

BTW, when you get the popup ad that covers the post so that you cannot read the post, way down in the lower left hand corner of the popup ad is a very faint "close" sign. Click that and the popup ad will dissapear.

LoveItaly Apr 26th, 2005 11:51 AM

Well, the joke is on me, write after I posted I got another popup ad and there was not "close" sign on it, but it did go away immediately. Irritating!

Amapola_ Apr 26th, 2005 01:14 PM

I'm not seeing the ads either, just the top orange/yellow navigation bar. Gotta love those pop-up & ad blockers!
:-)

kybourbon Apr 26th, 2005 01:30 PM

I have adware, spyware, aol pop up blocker and still the ads pop up. I just clicked on my aol blocker to make sure it was set and it offered the option of clicking on block animated media from Fodors.com so I clicked it. Now the ads are appearing and then disappearing in a second but not always.
How many blockers does it take????
