Annoying Expedia ad on the right - is everyone else getting this?
I've just noticed a huge Expedia ad popping up to the right of every post I click on - REALLY annoying, it's pushing all the text to the left, taking longer for threads to pop iup, and it's produced a few error messages. Am I the only one? Can we campaign to get it removed?
|
Yes, plus a lot of error messages due to the new change in format. ((b))
|
I just noticed the same thing. It's annonying and slows down the thread. But I doubt Fodor's will remove it since it's extra advertising $$$$ for them.
|
I was just going to post the same message. It's horrible. If it's necessary surely it could be smaller.
|
You can put my vote in the "extremely annoying category" as well.
Makes me not want to use Expedia in protest! |
And you thought the new format for the top of the page was bad!
I couldn't believe it when I logged on this morning. This new "mess" makes it difficult to read the messages, I've had a good half dozen error messages and as others have said it slows everything down. It's awful!>:o |
Yes, it's definitely WAY worse than the "roll-down" ad they had before!
|
I don't care for it myself.
And that dragon is scaring me. I read the posts and scroll down and then that dragon is in my peripheral vision, nasty! Ugh! |
I tried two different browsers, and nothing obnoxious comes up. Just that ugly header with Destinations et al at the top. I must admit orange-brown on tan does not set my jollies to rolling.
|
Hey, it's their site, so they set the rules....and it cost you nothing. Go by their rule....or leave.
Besides, there are a lot of more important things in life to get upset about! |
Oh, it's changed now to a beach scene, but I still don't care for it.
|
My biggest rant today: when I open an old post to see who added to it, to click on "jump to the last post" is so difficult now! I have to aim or else I'll click on that expedia ad. This is unacceptable.
|
I have to agree with Howard on this one. This is nothing to get worked up about. I went to the Dodger game last night and the outfield wall looked like a NASCAR racing car with all the advertising. But after a few seconds, it was on to baseball, and I never noticed the advertising again (plus the Dodgers lost, which always makes me happy).
This is a good site as this one and, most importantly, it is the Fodor's Board. If they can get some extra revenue from ads, that's certainly ok by me. Grin and bear it and, who knows, maybe somehing will pop up on the right that interests you. Either that or just ignore it. ((H)) |
"This is a good site as this one and, most importantly, it is the Fodor's Board."
Actually, "This is a good site, and most importantly, it is the Fodor's Board." OK, maybe they could have a deal where you could go back and correct incredibly bad sentences like the one that I posted above, but you get my drift. ((H)) |
We wouldn't like it if a salesman stuck his face 3 inches in front of ours to make his sales pitch.
Why should we accept it on this forum? It's: Annoying Obnoxious Impossible to get rid of The "cancel" button doesn't work |
Why should we accept it? Well, because it IS Fodor's forum, we pay nothing for all the great information posted here, and it definitely costs Fodor's money to keep it up and running. If you would just ignore it instead of focusing all your attention on it, you would get used to it and not notice it. Better than having Fodor's cancel the forum because it's too expensive to run.

Just wondering is this link is wide enough to push it out of view.

Do they seriously think anybody who opens a thread to read will jump to paid ads?
And I hope we won't have to wait till the next April 1st to see it covered by a sticky just to be un-covered the next day. |
They want us to read the adverts and they have succeeded. Remember this is a FREE site and we are their GUESTS. Kind of like travel, non?
|
I understand why it is there but I do not have to like it.
|
and of course, Fodor's gets nothing at all from its "guests" does it? I mean, that's why no Fodor's editors ever come on the boards and ask for information themselves, or ever use that information they get from their "guests" right????
|
Like SusanP said, these websites cost money to run. You can hardly blame them for wanting to get some return on their investment. Would you prefer them to switch over to a system of paid membership, as some other message boards have done? Do the kind Fodors folks a favor and click on the ads every once in a while; I imagine they get paid at least partly based on click-throughs.
|
I guess I'm missing what you folks are seeing. I thought maybe it was the browser that I am using, but I now think it must be either my pop up blocker or anti-spyware software that is keeping the ads from showing up.
|
Quite interesting to read all this discontent over something tht I am not seeing. I must REALLY have my computer "armor-clad" now (I have been plagued by spyware, and I have layers on top of layers of "permission required to access" protection now - -Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta, Adorons (SpyHunter), ewido, and Yahoo anti-pop-up... though turning off the Yahoo isn't making any difference)...
So... anyhow... there apparently IS a (or are) way(s) to prevent this appearing on your screen - - though I am not entirely sure WHY I am not seeing what is plaguing the rest of you! Best wishes, Rex |
I agree with HowardR--get over it.
|
I was just a lil scared of the dragon is all, getting used to him now, have names him "Puff" - no insult intended to Bali.
I hope everyone can 'hear' all the sarcasm in my posts, you can't really think I am serious. After all, not even dragons could keep me away from reading all the expert advice from you good people. Now go forth and multiply, T. |
Please pay VERY close attention to how these Expedia people are <b> dressed </b> since that is the way you must dress the next time you travel to Europe so you can "fit in." Otherwise, they will turn you away at the border.
|
Rex, the reason you aren't seeing it is because they were afraid you would tell them it is their "first time here...." etc. <LOL>
|
Good grief! If Rex can't see it - he can't post a link to prove it's been here before!
|
It is the most annoying thing Fodor's has done, but they do call the shots. Does not mean we can't hate it.
|
what bothers me is not so much the ad itself, but that it blocks text that I'm trying to read, and whether I right click or left click on it, there's seemingly no way to close it or delete it
It also produced error messages for me on some threads |
I don't like them but I can live with them. There is one for Marriott tho' that rollls across the text. That is REALLY unacceptable
Would thos of you who can't see them please tell us a) what browser you're using and b) what anti-pop-up soft ware you're rusing. Thanks. |
spygirl - there is a Fodor's Editor who has posted on the Africa/Middle East Board - he/she is off to Egypt shortly, from "our" advise.
These ads weren't there this morning... but this afternoon that just hit you in the face. The one (whichever it is) that scrolls left across the text is most annoying. Sent an email to the Editors to "kindly remove" - there's more than enough advertising on this site. I'm not banking on it, but let's see if they listed to feedback! |
Sheila, I'm not seeing any ads. I'm using IE 6 as my browser and my pop up stopper is courtesy of my Nortons Utilities program. Judy |
Well I see the ads on the right side of the screen.
But the most annoying to me is how much slower Fodors site is now. BTW, when you get the popup ad that covers the post so that you cannot read the post, way down in the lower left hand corner of the popup ad is a very faint "close" sign. Click that and the popup ad will dissapear. |
Well, the joke is on me, write after I posted I got another popup ad and there was not "close" sign on it, but it did go away immediately. Irritating!
|
I'm not seeing the ads either, just the top orange/yellow navigation bar. Gotta love those pop-up & ad blockers!
:-) |
I have adware, spyware, aol pop up blocker and still the ads pop up. I just clicked on my aol blocker to make sure it was set and it offered the option of clicking on block animated media from Fodors.com so I clicked it. Now the ads are appearing and then disappearing in a second but not always.
How many blockers does it take???? |
