Santa Caterina looks lovely, but I would not want to be out of town - walking along the coastal road is nearly suicidal! :-) But if you plan on staying mainly at the hotel and relaxing on the beach, then it certainly looks like a good choice!

denisea Mar 13th, 2014 03:56 PM

thanks...ekc it's this type of logistical info you need when you haven't been to a place like this!

Hi Denisea,

We're sharing your excitement about your trip to the Amalfi Coast. It's a truly beautiful place, and you're sure to have a delightful time. Your upcoming trip to Lisbon sounds exciting. That's still on our wish list. Our more recent trips have been in the good ol' USA. We're headed again to NYC in May. I usually don't do T/Rs for domestic trips although we've really enjoyed them. I just try to respond to questions other waFodorites have. Do you write TRs for trips within the US? We
usually very simpatico with your "take" on things.

tomarkot Mar 26th, 2014 06:45 PM

Hi again, Denisea,

Excuse the errors in the previous post. "Technical issues". . .Preview "froze".

denisea Apr 7th, 2014 11:54 AM

Wow just seeing this...I wrote a short TR a two years ago for our trip to NYC (we were there the first wknd in May). It was only a long wknd but included my fantasy lunch at Le Bernardin!

ekc Apr 7th, 2014 12:32 PM

Oh Denisea - eating at Le Bernardin, always a highlight of my trips to NYC!

WWK Apr 7th, 2014 01:12 PM

I agree with ekc about Santa Caterina. We met some friends there and freaked over the walk into town. Not something I'd care to repeat, but as ekc says, if you're planning to just stay and relax, no problem!

denisea Apr 7th, 2014 04:24 PM

ekc....Le Bernardin is a little piece of heaven on earth. I hope to run into Eric Ripert there one day!

Point taken re: Santa Caterina. If I make it to 50, I don't want to die on the side of the road!

ekc Apr 8th, 2014 08:19 AM

I hope you do - he is as handsome as ever!

Keep looking for hotels and apartments - believe it or not some places book a year in advance on the AC!

Hi Denise:

In a Feb posting, I mentioned the Hotel Marincanto in Positano. The views are fantastic and the staff could not have been better. Here is the website:

You can also read reviews on Booking.com

By the way, I am booked at the Albergo del Senato at the end of September...

denisea Apr 8th, 2014 11:39 AM

Huge crush on Eric Rippert! Chaz did try to get him to our table (while I was in the powder room but he was not there that day).
Not surprised to hear AC books up early! Weekender, I am so jealous of your ADS reservation!

Palazzo Sasso in Ravello is where we stayed but it has been awhile. Spent about 10 days on our trip. Started in Naples for arch museum, then to Pompeii and on to Capri for about three nights. Then to Ravello. Wonderful trip!

WWK Apr 9th, 2014 12:18 PM

Did you check Bucca di Bacco, ground level in Positano? It has a wonderful restaurant, gorgeous rooms and water views.

ILUVPARIS Apr 9th, 2014 01:43 PM

We stayed at Le Sirenuse about 7 years ago. We went in late September so right around the time you're talking about. We arrived in Naples and it was POURING. It was also late so we couldn't see much on the drive from Naples to Positano. This was really torrential rain and I was really stressing wondering what we'd do on the AC for 5 days in the rain. The next morning my husband jumped in the shower and I drew open the blinds to the most beautiful view I have ever seen. I just kept yelling to him, 'come here, you have to see this!!!!' Thankfully we had perfect weather our entire trip! I know this hotel often receives a perfect score on location in Travel and Leisure's Best Hotel issue and it absolutely deserves it. I'd score it 110! Truly one of my all-time favorite hotels. Yes, it is expensive but the rates in September/October are less than during the summer months.

Enjoy your trip next year. Can't think of a more lovely place to spend it regardless of where you stay.

denisea Apr 9th, 2014 06:36 PM

I am thinking we will want to be in Positano for our first visit. If I am wrong here, let me know but it seems that we will be closer to more . Easier to get around. Ravello looks beautful and I am sure we will visit there but am afraid we will regret being far away. In the end, it all looks beautful and you probably can't go horribly wrong here.

ekc Apr 10th, 2014 06:44 AM

I agree D. Ravello is pretty and a good day trip from Positano (combined with Amalfi, via ferry) but it is at least a 20 minute bus ride up the hill to get to Ravello from Amalfi. So it more logistically difficult if wishing to see other parts of the AC - and there is no access to the sea obviously.

Weekender Apr 10th, 2014 08:28 AM

We needed wine after getting off that packed bus. Didn't matter that it was only 10 AM. We took a taxi back to Amalfi.

The Palazzo Sasso is now the Palazzo Avino. Fabulous hotel.

WWK Apr 10th, 2014 10:44 AM

Yes, Ravello is gorgeous (!), but a bit remote for touring, etc. Definitely make it a day trip and visit the famous gardens!

denisea Apr 10th, 2014 02:46 PM

Weekender-you're supposed to drink wine before you get on the packed bus!! :-)

Judy Apr 10th, 2014 02:58 PM

We have heard horror stories about the bus as well and have booked a driver from Positano to Ravello. Our plan is to walk down from Ravello to Amalfi and take the ferry back to Positano.
