I may have to wait longer than 10 years to really do all the traveling I'd like - maybe after I retire.
My big plan is to take my kids to Italy next year - that's gonna take just about all our money for that sort of thing, but if we can scrape up the money again I'd like to take them to Paris and Switzerland, after that I travel on my own. I want to go to New Orleans without kids someday. And I'd like to do an African safari, I'm sure my kids would too but I think they'd have to pay for that themselves! And if what everyone says about Italy is true, I'm sure I'll probably want to go back there as well...funny thing, my husband is Norweigian and I'm of Scottish origin but really have no desire to go to either of those countries |
I like this thread. Thanks for topping it breezy. It's interesting to see the diversity of places people are interested in.
I have no idea whether or not a 10 year plan would include as many places as I'd like. Things happen. But I'd like to work in: 1) Australia (a family thing for us to regularly visit over the next 10 yrs but working in side trips as we go) 2) Italy - Rome and Tuscany 3) Laos and Vietnam 4) Ireland (always) 5) A leisurely drive from Lake Bled, Slovenia down the coast to Dubrovnik. 6) Nepal to Bhutan 7) Bavaria for castles and Black Forest to do some looking around into my family roots. 8) Easter Island, maybe backtracking to Cusco & Machu Picchu 9) Alpine lakes tour loop - Como, Annecy, Geneva, Lucerne 10) Romania |
I opened up this thread, thought it was pretty interesting, and there I saw the post I had made on 1/10/01. I hadn't remembered I had posted previously - I guess I'm at least the second person here with the same occurrence.
Here is an update of my first list. Ukraine/Belarus - we want to go to do family history research - but logisitcs are a bit too much, so this trip is being put off Istanbul to Israel overland - still a dream trip Copenhagen - visited this past winter - very nice city National Parks out west - haven't gone to any of the ones I mentioned Bequia or Saba in the Carib. - going to Bequia in November Ecuador - went last fall San Antonio/Austin - plan to go next year to SA Retirement scouting - too early to do serious looking, but go places with an eye to the future Quebec City - leaving for there tonight! |
Thanks for topping this Breezy - how interesting to see my own list from back then!

Clifton, I also have roots in the Black Forest. My maternal great-grandmother's name was Schwartzwalder, which I understand means "Black Forest" in German, or close to it! My sister-in-law just returned from Germany 2 days ago and went to the parish church in Germany where her (and my husband's) maternal great-grandfather was baptized. The pastor arranged for some of the "Lechleiters" still around to come and meet them, and she said it was the highlight of their 3-week trip!

Hagen,
How interesting that must have be for her to go back to the point of departure and discover all those family connections. Had she done a lot of research before going? I'd love to get there sometime. All four sides of my family immigrated from Germany, but my paternal grandmother had given me a bit more to go on with her family than the other branches. They'd had a geneology survey done that went back to the Black Forest. I know the family name (father's father)is from the Rhine Valley and they raised vineyards (our last name means "grape farmer"), but that's all I know. Somehow I suspect I'd connect with these areas, even if I didn't find long lost relatives. Just a hunch. |
Wow. It was great to read this old post and relize that in the past 2.5 years I've been to 4 of the places on my list -- Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and the Amalfi coast of Italy -- and that by the end of this year I will have been to another (South Africa). And still the list of places to see grows longer...
