Just wanting to bring this to the top, since it is so interesting

herself Jan 8th, 2001 11:50 AM

Well all I have to do is look at the folders in my bottom desk drawer. Let's see.
Germany and Bavaria
Tuscany
Normandy (again)
Paris (again)
Prague
Spain
and of course, Ireland (again and again)
I also have three short trips planned.
Montreal
New Orleans (in two weeks)
and Monticello
To all you young whipper snappers out there take those strenuous trips NOW. I wasted lots of vacations on Aruba, Cancun, Nassau, Puerto Rico etc beaches during years when I loved and could hike high elevations. There are trips you can do in your 90's Others you can only do when you have the physical ability. Have fun.
elvira Jan 8th, 2001 11:58 AM

In no special order:
Scotland
Galapagos Islands
southern Morocco/Tunisia
Madagascar
Nepal/Tibet
The Silk Road through China
Walk the "spine" of the Japanese islands
Eastern Europe
Canada via the east/west train
the Basque country

Egypt (Want to see the ancient sites, and also to learn to scuba in the red sea)
8. Israel and Jordan (probably on a combined tour)
9. More of Africa (went to Tanzania and Kenya years ago, visiting Namibia and Botswana on safari in June 01)
10. Zanzibar (So exotic, with spice markets and hustle bustle as well as quiet relaxed beaches)
11. Iceland (but I hate the cold so am thinking about this one)

CUT

It’s a negotiation process. I want to go places she doesn’t, and vice versa (her priorities are nonsense, of course…), but among the overlaps are:
New places/experiences:
1. Antarctica – we’ve both traveled (and worked a little) at the northern end, so we’d like to see how the other end stacks up.
2. The Veneto – we were green with envy at Elvira’s prowling of the Palladian villas thereabouts last year. Could happen this spring, maybe autumn.
3. Southern South America – Buenos Aires and south, Patagonia, Chile, T del F, etc.
4. Newfoundland and the Maritimes.
5. More of the South Pacific – back to Fiji, certainly, maybe also W. Samoa, Tonga, or Kiribati (we’ve met some Kiribatis(?) and they are really cool people.) Can’t shake the CSN&Y lyrics – “…Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas…”
6. Northern Sweden and Finland
7. Istanbul and Anatolia
8. Southern Africa – SA, Botswana, Tanzania.
9. Oaxaca and other hilly places in Mexico
Repeats and indulgences:
1. Another freighter cruise – this time from the Mediterranean to W. Australia. Maybe next year. We could leave tomorrow if it wasn’t for those pesky jobs.
2. Spring in Catalonia, both sides of the border.
3. Cross-US drives – lots of places still to see, or see again
4. Israel – shalom, chaverim…
5. New Zealand – 10 days wasn’t nearly enough.
6. The Dordogne, Alsace, Provence, Brittany.. oh, hell, the whole country.
7. She: Tintin chachkis hunting in Belgium, He: Iran, once it’s PC again.
Duck Jan 9th, 2001 03:38 AM

O.K. Here is the tally through Monday night (1/8). I have listed those destinations that received 5 or more votes in desending order.

However, I thought you may like to see some of the more exotic locals (or things?).

Italy (15)
New Zealand (10)
Spain/Portugal (8)
Greece (7)
Australia (7)
South of France (6)(7 for all of)
China (5)
Cuba (5)
Ireland (5)
French Polynesia(5)
Thailand (5)
African (safari) (5)

Note: Total Eastern Europe many votes; Japan only 3 nods with Nepal higher at 4

Where (or what) in the world is it: Benelux, Prince Edward Island, Angkor Watt, Tonga - sailing (as good as BVI?), Tallinn, Aenegada, Anatolia, Tintin Chachkis (?)

Any more thoughts?

Thanks - Duck

Howard Jan 10th, 2001 06:34 AM

Agree with previous posters that this is quite an interesting question.

My list would include -

*Ukraine/Belarus - probably going this year to visit towns my family originally came from.

*Istanbul to Israel overland thru Syria and Jordan - this is more of a dream trip, one for which probably would take too long to give it justice than I have vacation time. Will probably just visit Turkey (have been to Israel previously).

*Copenhagen

*One or more of the National Parks in the US west I have not been to - e.g. Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Teton

*Bequia and Saba in the Caribbean (a trip to the latter would be my 5th visit)

*Ecuador

*San Antonio/Austin - have only been to Texas once - to El Paso for one night

*Scouting around to see in what warmer locale I may retire to (now live in DC) - including the places in Texas above, Charleston, S.C., Florida, Tucson, etc.

*Quebec City

I really agree about doing the strenuous stuff when you are young & agile. We could never do some of the stuff we did 10-15 years ago. Haven't been to Europe yet... start next year. Think very carefully about going to India. Very un-PC to say, but it is a dump.
