10 Year Travel Plans!
My wife and I have been fortunate enough to have enough frequent flyer miles to take a major worldwide trip each year. We are not to the point that we plan on revisiting favorite places on a regular basis. We are still looking for that next special destination. We want to hear your opinion. To date, our special destinations have included destinations in Europe, Asia and the Pacific rim. We are looking for our next special destinations – special because of the people (Ireland), natural beauty (New Zealand) or other reasons (Paris/London).

If you were to develop a 10 year worldwide travel plan, what would be your favorite picks?
Dear Duck,
you hit my hot button -- I happen to have a ten year travel plan. Each year I take a trip to one of the ten, come home and cross it off my list and add a tenth, -- hope the Good Lord allows my health to accomplish. Here's my list, not necessarily in the order I plan to take the trip.
1. American West (Yellowstone, Grand Tetons etc. (doing that one this year)
2. Northwest Pacfific Coast, from San Francisco up to Vancouver/Victoria
3. A Mississippi Riverboat cruise (Delta Queen type) anywhere.
4. Switzerland and environs
5. Newfoundland (and maybe Labrador)
6. Iceland (and maybe Greenland)
7. the Holy Lands
8. Australia and New Zealand
9. Gallepegos Islands (pardon the spelling)
10. Hawaii
Marie mentioned some of my faves, but let me add a few more. (I plan FAR more trips than we will ever be able to take!)

- Amazon River cruise
- French Polynesia (NOT Tahiti)
- A Windjammer cruise of small islands in the southern Carribean
- Southern Africa (photo safari)
- Nepal (hiking)
- The Andes, eg. Machu Pichu (hiking)
- Southern France (biking)

Soulmates!

- Eastern Europe
- Bora Bora, Moorea
- Indonesia - specifically Lompoc
- Malaysia
- Nepal
- Thailand (a return trip - we loved it)
- Rio
- British Virgin Islands
- Grenada and the Grenadines
- Egypt
- India

With of course, trips to Paris and Amsterdam interspersed. We love Europe but have really enoyed trips to Asia - they are just so much more time consuming. Flying to Europe for 3 oe 4 days is one thing, but flying to Asia isn't worth it for a short visit.

Switzerland, S. France, Spain/Portugal,Germany, Benelux,Austria, Australia, Tahiti, Costa Rica,Cuba. In NO particular order, when the opportunity presents itself! :-) Judy

Dear posters................

Appreciate your ideas. Going to Australia this October and maybe Bali next (or Egypt/Israel/Jordan). Who knows - that is part of the fun.

Duck

ST. Petersburg and Cuba (want to be on the first flight in). Always connect in AMS, probaly even for Cuba. mike.

Our travel "lists" have to fit in around our committments in the Balkans.
My husband has a strong desire to see a glacier "calve", whether in Alaska or Norway is of little moment. And we both want to get to Greece and Italy soon.

Other than that, we will accept the "kismet" that leads us where we go:) Six years ago if you had told me we would be so deeply connected to our friends in Hungary, Macedonia and Czech Republic we probably would have looked at you very strangely:)
|
-London in March
-all MLB ballparks, ongoing
-Iceland, maybe when I graduate
-Cuba, after that old dinosaur dies
-Korea, who knows when
|
Our next destination will be Turkey this May. I still really want to go to Krakow, maybe I can fit it in this fall on our trip to Germany and Austria. The highlight of the trip will be Oktoberfest - for my husband and his friend - their destination of a lifetime!

Here is my list:
Poland
Greece
Spain
Nepal
New Zealand
Galapagos Islands
Seychelles
Petra, Jordan
China
Malaysia

I like to look at National Geographic Traveler's "50 Places of a Lifetime" issue to give me ideas of places to go.
My husband and I have been fortunate that we are in a position to travel quite a bit. Like the above poster, we maintain top ten lists, try to hit them in order (season permitting), adding new ones to the list once we've visited one of the places on our list. My list now consists of the following (in rough priority order):

Egypt - pyramids
Amazon/rain forest
Italy: Rome, Venice, Pompeii
Angkor Watt
India: Various cities, inc. seeing Taj Mahal
African photo safari
New York
Washington DC
Argentina or Chile
Australia (Sydney esp)
Japan
Bali
German castle tour
|
A few more that I should have included in my post above (since I have, indeed, planned them out at one time or another):
- The Greek islands and Turkish coast on a small motor-sailer.
- Slovenia and Croatia.
- New Zealand (my father was stationed there with the U.S. Marines during WWII, and frequently talked about the great people and magnificent geography).
- Japan.
- Alaska.
- The Austrian Alps and Italian Dolomites (we're going this Summer!!)
|
Turkey
Southern Italy, particularly Pompei
Scotland
Patagonia
Glacier National Park
Provence
Yucatan Peninsula
Greek Isles
Costa Rica (We're going there next month!)

Looking over this list, I see two recurring themes of natural beauty and ancient ruins; neither of which I can see now: strip malls surrounded by half melted piles of filthy snow.
