Dear Robyn: In general, people were amicable. At Hawksbill, very few Americans, mostly Europeans which they admit that they cater to. Was told by our driver that the Antiguians were not too thrilled with Americans although the Americans are considered to be the best "tippers". We were there during Carnival Time and found the main town to be very 3 worldish. Ate in town at a lovely restaurant recommended by our driver (expensive) and then walked to the casino which was small, cozy and fun. We found the roads (4 years ago) to be in horrendous condition with huge potholes. By and large the people were pleasant and cool friendly. Toured the Island and nothing really was super outstanding to us. Would I go back? Probably not...as the world is very large and so many other places to see. But, if I would go back, it would be to Hawksbill!

I must disagree with Bette's comments although I'm sure her opinion has merit. My experience with Antiguans was fantastic. I found the opposite to be true about Americans vs. Europeans. The Antiguans openly despise the Europeans. We were told that they are considered rude and cheap.The Antiguans waited on us hand and foot and were the most pleasant friendly people weve ever met on any island. The restaurants on the island are exquiste and yes, expense goes with that. We dined at Chez Pascal, Coconut Grove and Julianes. Along with Big Bannana and our hotel restaurant all very good. On Sunday we went to Shirley Heights for a barbeque and reggae party ( that was great). We also took a catamaran around the island one day. You can also do the Jeep tour. So I think there is a little more to do if you are adventuroous

Dear Scott: Maybe we stayed on the wrong side of Antigua, being our first time there. I will keep your views in mind should we consider going there again. But Scott, the one thing that I have never forgotton was what our Antiguian driver said to my spouse and I about the Americans. Whether he was correct or not, his statement somehow remains imbedded in my mind. The only way to erase this opinion and resolve it is, I guess, to eventually return and possibly give it 1 more shot.

Curtain Bluff on Antigua is fabulous. I would most certainly return to this lovely hotel with incredible food and great wine. The beach is lovely as well and the proprietor, Howard, is the best at what he does. Don't miss it!

My husband and I stayed in Antigua in 2/99 and are going back in 1/01. We have travelled all over the Caribbean and this is the first time we are going back to the same resort. I would highly recommend Galley Bay. We checked out Curtain Bluff and were not impressed. The rooms were in need of refurbishing and we did not have a good experience with the owner. . . maybe he was just having a bad day but he thought nothing of speaking poorly of the owner of Galley Bay and was just a plain old snob!

I have been hearing about GALLEY BAY, ... can someone who has stayed there PLEASE tell me more? I am planning a trip to Antigua in March and am looking for a smallish resort with a great beach and cottage style rooms. We love to snorkle and golf. Would Galley Bay be the best location?
