OK, they're not really music, but they are friggin' hilarious. Suzie Vinnick - she's done a lot of backup for others and is a wonderful talent Betty and the Bobs - includes Suzie and Wendell Ferguson along with some other quality Canadian musicians Ian Tamblyn Sneezy Waters (played Hank Williams in the play and movie The Show He Never Gave) You can also buy a lot of Canadian music from www.maplemusic.com. I've shopped through them a lot (when I'm not buying directly from the artist) and they're really good and quick (barring the customs slowdowns). |

Yes, there is tons of great music from Quebec! Jean Leloup is one of my favourites (and he's now going under the name of Jean Leclerc).

Oh, Jorane is very, very cool. She's a cellist/eccentric singer. Saw her play at the Vancouver Folk Fest in 2004 and loved every moment of it.

Some great suggestions......!
A few of my favourite Canadian 'travelling songs' include Aengus Finnan's great cover of 'One Hand on the Radio', Aengus again with 'Swing Boys Swing'; Stomping Tom Connors 'ripping the tar off the 401' in 'Bud the Spud'; and Gordon Lightfoot's 'Long Thin Dawn'. My favourite however is Stan Rogers' anthemic 'Northwest Paasage' which includes verses such as this: "Through the night behind the wheel The mileage clicking West I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest Who cracked the mountain ramparts And did show a path for me To race the roaring Fraser to the Sea." I'm just thinking that a fun trip would be to drive the TCH coast to coast and listen to the music of each region one passed through. There are literally 100's of other good Canadian recording artists not mentioned above. cheers Jerry |
gannetmusic, that's more or less what I was planning for our September vacation! We are bringing a couple with us who have not traveled much (from Florida), and will be journeying from Vancouver to Banff and back. My plan was to give them a "briefing page" each day (to put in the travel book I've made for them) that talks about the area we'll be going through, its history, something interesting, and then plan stops that relate to that. If I can add in some music, that would be really fun. (We did a trip like this with them last year to Reno/Bodie/Yosemite/Monterey/San Francisco/Tahoe. They had a blast, and after we returned from the trip, DH put together a DVD for them with a picture slide show & music background of the trip.)

If you like Great Big Sea (Celtic pop), check out the Paperboys and Clumsy Lovers, both of which are based in BC, I believe. They both play in Seattle frequently and are lots of fun. I have the Paperboys' "Molinos" CD and think it's great driving around music.
