How about some Canadian music?
 

...to listen to in the car as we drive around BC? I got some great book recs on this forum, any ideas for music? Any good new (or old for that matter) Rock, Jazz, ethnic? What's happening over there in the music scene? Would love to have some suggestions for those long hours driving.

You can also go to www.amazon.ca, click the Music tab, then select Canadian music from the left-hand menu. That should bring up the latest in Canadian music.

There's a lot of different Canadian music out there, for all different tastes. A lot of independent rock bands are getting pretty popular abroad, such as Broken Social Scene, and the Arcade Fire. Whether this would appeal to you or not depends on the music you like. :)

Some of my favourites include:

Feist (beautiful, fragile, jazzy voice)

Patrick Watson (a Montreal band - dream-like pop/rock songs, with a Jeff Buckley-like voice)

Sam Roberts (catchy Montreal-based rock band)

Daniel Lanois (folk/rock/blues and a few French songs- he produced most of U2's most famous albums like the Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, and the Unforgettable Fire - "For the Beauty of Winona" is a beautiful album)

Broken Social Scene - an experimental rock band from Ontario - "You Forgot It In People" has some great songs.

Blue Rodeo (from the prairies - a popular folky/blues/country rock band... it's an understated country in the same way that k.d. lang is country.

Holly Cole (local jazz singer from BC)

Diana Krall (a more famous jazz singer from BC)

Esthero (lounge/jazz singer... trendy cocktail bar and stylish fashion show music)

The Dears (from Montreal - complex, dreamy rock/pop songs, sounds almost British)

Metric (simple pop/rock songs with female vocals)

Sarah Harmer (from Ontario - beautiful understated voice, singer/songwriter, folky pop songs)

k-os (hip hop/pop, often with catchy and sometimes political lyrics)

Arcade Fire (I like their unique sound, as do many people, but some songs can be an acquired taste)

Bedouin Soundclash (some catchy summer reggae/punk songs)

One suggestion is to look up these bands/singers on Myspace.com as you can listen to some samples of their music without having to download or purchase anything.

Don't forget the roots-traditional favorites like Natalie MacMaster (Nova Scotia/Cape Breton), Leahy (Ontario) Barra MacNeils (Nova Scotia) and Great Big Sea (Newfoundland). Hoping to discover new west coast favs on my trip!

I didn't see anyone mention Avril Livigne.

Ian and Sylvia, Gordon Lightfoot, Ann Murray. Although she is Irish, I believe she now lives in Canada, Loreena McKennitt.

I second the suggestion for Great Big Sea. They're fabulous and lots of fun!
