which reminds me, does Neko Case count as Canadian? Fox Confessor Brings the Flood would be great for driving
|

|

|
Adding to the list....
Amanda Marshall Skydiggers Sass Jordan |
Ron Sexsmith http://www.ronsexsmith.com/

Why did I think Blue Rodeo was from the prairies? Weird. Oh well... I love them where ever in Canada they're from! ;)
Neko Case is an honorary Canadian, why not? |
So far I have liked and downloaded Gordon Lightfoot, Corb Lund, Bedouin Soundclash, New pornographers,Holly Cole, Blue Rodeo, Ron Sexmith, Holly Cole, Jesse Cook & Bedouin Soundclash.
A few I couldn't find on the web site I use. Still listening to loads. Thanks! |
You are right, Kodi, Ian and Sylvia are no longer together, but I have a cd with "Four Strong Winds" and many other of their songs. What a great couple they made (at least in music).
|
On the ones you couldn't find on the website, check the artist website - many offer free downloads on their own sites (especially those independents who don't have major marketing abilities).
|
Or at least they may have song samples so you can see if you'd like them enough to buy the CD...
|
Unless I missed it, I think it is worth mentioning Lederhosen Lucil, too. I don't know how to accurately describe her music. It's kind of silly.
|
Boy, I can't believe all the artists I have not heard of. I must be getting old!! Cmcfong, ah yes... Four Strong Winds... a great one! Have you heard any of Ian Tyson's " Cowboyography" CD? I think it's about 15 years old and it's great . I think even better than the old stuff with Sylvia.
Carrom, glad to hear you've downloaded some of Gordon Lightfoot. A real Canadian treasure. Enjoy!! |
Thanks to this thread, I have been listening to Ian and Sylvia all afternoon. What great sounds. Kodi, I am going to see if I can find that cd of Ian's. It is a definite must have.
It will strike everyone as corny as hell but one of my favorite pieces of music is O Canada by Anne Murray. That girl can sing! Has anyone mentioned that Celine Dion and Shania Twain are Canadians? |
No, I don't think it's considered polite to do so in public.
Hot Hot Heat- (kaput, I think?) but fun for driving Stars- lovely but maybe kind of a downer Wolf Parade- retarded name, amazing talent alexisonfire- are these kids still around? They were all over last time I watched tv. I liked their moxey. I don't listen to him, but Final Fantasy gets a lot of buzz. Remember the CBC radio announcers giggling over the name of his album that won some award-"He Poos Cloudes" |
If I had to choose I would say k. d. lang's album "Songs From the 49th Parallel". A recoding she made a few years back of songs written by Canadian Songwriters. To hear her sing Neil Young's "Helpless" is pure Canadian bliss!!
Also, I don't believe anyone has mentioned Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, or Valdy. And how about playing Ian Tyson's "Four Strong Winds", as you drop down out of the Highwood Pass, into the Alberta Foothills at Black Diamond. There's no better song to go with that vista -- especially in the fall. |
Kaos - another terrific artist that hasn't been mentioned, hiphop.
|
hydra~Thanks for mentioning Leonard Cohen. The recently released I'm Your Man with the Wainwrights, U2 and many more, is fantastic if you're a fan.
I think Ian Tyson's voice, and Cowboyography is classic Canadian---what about Murray McLaughlin and Bruce Cockburn and Tom Cochrane? BC might even be a great spot to play some Joni Mitchell. :) All time favourite Canadian band is still Blue Rodeo though---live performances are terrific too. |
Hydra and TobieT, both excellent posts!! I agree with all you both said.
I've always meant to buy that kd lang Cd but have never gotten around to it. I'll also have to listen to the new Leonard Cohen. ...sounds good. Cmcfong, yup Anne has a great voice. I have seen a few of her concerts.. but not for awhile now. I hope you get to hear Cowboyography by Ian Tyson.. Tobie, I just saw Jim Cuddy ( of Blue Rodeo, for those that don't know) in concert and he was great. |
kodi~ I really like Jim's new solo album too.
Just in case you wondered, I'm Your Man featuring Leonard Cohen's music is actually a film, now available to rent: http://www.leonardcohenimyourman.com/ kd lang's version of "Crying", especially with Roy Orbison is simply haunting too. We have lots of great music to offer carrom! ((8)) |
