Where Are You Going in 2010?
..and no, "to the poorhouse" is not the answer to this question!
Seriously, where are you headed? How long will your trip last, and will this be a first-time visit, or are you returning to a place you love? I expect Carol will tell us she's running for mayor of Bangkok, but where in Asia will you land? |
I have my fingers crossed for the following:
BKK and Luang Prabang Paris Corsica Bkk- Cambodia. Glad to see you posting BC, will you be going anywhere in 2010? |
Hi bookchick! Glad to see you here. Our only booked trip is to Istanbul and Cappadocia for 10 days in March/April--our first trip to Turkey. We're tossing around other ideas for the summer, but nothing is set in stone yet. One trip we may make later in the year is to take another look at your big university; it's DD's favorite at the moment. Will you get to go to Italy this year?
|
>>>Where Are You Going in 2010?<<<
(Anywhere, via SQ 'J and above' is fine with me; yes, easy to please.) Thanks for the thread, 'BC'; at present: Work: Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, San Francisco Bay Area, and do hope to spend more time in 'ICN'. (Via Singapore Airlines, as much as possible; and no disrespect to you, TG and UA.) Holiday, with family/friends (most likely, long weekends, at best): UK, Hawaii, an undisclosed location, and Kathmandu for a long over-due reunion with some all-time cherished mountaineering buddies. Joyous, prosperous and healthy work/leisure travel to all of you in '10. macintosh (robert) ... Singapore Airlines, You're a Great Way to Fly ... |
BKK - Jan. 14 thru Jan 29. 3rd trip to BKK. Staying at the Plaza Athenee.
|
Bangkok; Burma (Pandaw cruise and Inle Lake); Shanghai; Hong Kong (Feb-March)
|
Me? I'm not sure yet what'll go on in 2010. I am slated to return to Boston to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in April, the Friday before my birthday. Other than that I honestly don't know right now. I'm back in school and training for a job in a new field, so I guess a lot depends on how quickly I wrap up my course, how successfully I've completed it, and how fast I can find a new job. (I intend to work in a new field concurrently with my present job, and eventually transition into the new field permanently.)
Really, Ms. Go, Michigan for Ally? I would be delighted to meet all three of you if she heads this way, and would also be happy to take Ally to see the Friars perform. You should search for the Friars of UMich on utube for a good laugh! Well, it's a good school, I can't deny it, I loved going to school there, and they did enable me to study in Italy for a year, too. Turkey sounds amazing, and I hope it is. Smeagol, BKK, really? Are you going to drug Muffin or just conk him on the head to get him on those flights, LOL! I must confess that eons ago when I was going to university in Italy, I told one of my French profs that I wanted to go to Corsica, and he talked me out of it. He said someone so young and fair-skinned and blonde shouldn't go to Corsica unaccompanied! And I was crazy enough to listen to him! BillT, NOW I know why you read the "Bob & Gpanda" trip report so closely! The hotel sounded great to me, I'll be interested in hearing what your impressions were after you return. Macintosh, that is some SERIOUS mountaineering, wow! Your work sure takes you all over the place, but I have a feeling you thrive on it. ekscrunchy, those sound like intriguing locales. I'd love to go to Hong Kong sometime. My immune system prevents me from getting the vaccines that would allow me to travel to Asia just now. But...coming here and reading about where you're all going gives me the energy and patience to "hang in there" until I can travel again on my own! Thanks, BC |

Hey....Guess what !
We're heading for Phi Phi in February, and of course some time in Bangkok. Also planned for 2010, is a spring visit to Berlin, Vietnam in November, and there's bound to be something else in between. Seen some awesome Roman ruins in Lebanon on T.V. so I'm currently looking into that. |
BillT- we leave for Bangkok on Jan 14 as well. Where are you flying from? Maybe we will see you on our flight.
|
We are flying on Northwest - route- Houston to Minneapolis to Narita to BKK.
|
Maybe we will see you in Narita - we arrive around 3 PM and depart at 5:30 PM, all on ANA.
|
HI, bc!
Very glad to see you posting again! Happy New Year! Hope your visit in April will be all thumbs up! Many of my trips are spur of the moment - don't know yet! |
2010 is a work in progress but here are the tentative plans:
February: 2-1/2 weeks - Varanasi (India), Kathmandu & Phulbari (Nepal), and Bangkok - all depends on the situation in Nepal (may spend more time in India instead)... July: 8 days in Colorado split between family reunion in Snowmass and family visit to Montrose with two night side trip to Mesa Verde... October: to celebrate our 20th anniversary we were originally going to spend 2 weeks in Bali but we have a family commitment that will prevent us from spending that much time - instead we will be spending 1 week in Maui... It will be a good year, no matter where we go... Happy New Year to all! |
Bob - why New Orleans to Florida border? If you play golf, bring your clubs to stop along the way. Not the most scenic of views though.
3 weeks in Vietnam in May and hoping to get to China the following year. Wish I could squeeze them both in this year! Mrs Go - Turkey is terrific. Check out the Fodors book - p. 379 for my picture of Cappadocia. |
Plans thus far:
Returning from BKK early January Vegas in January Florida in February Sydney for a wedding in March Valley Forge PA (work related) April in Switzerland early in the month BKK for DSs big birthday bash last part of April mid-year ??????????????????????????????? back to Europe in late Nov/early Dec BKK for the holidays again The only one I have ticketed is the Vegas trip, so far. Carol |
we had a small taste of that southern coast last jan, and decided we should see some more....just a reprieve from the cold NE--- tonight it is 17..
|
If you want a reprieve from the cold and a charming historical city for a few days - go to Charleston.
|
Craig, I hope you & Jeanne will be able to make it to Boston in October, despite your somewhat hectic schedule. Someone has to keep the Red Sox fans in line, you know....
BC |
Singapore in March. First time.
We have been to Thailand and loveb it. |
...greetings to all from sunny Mexico (requisite margarita in hand, of course.)
Sounds like everyone has some awesome plans in store for this great year ahead. We, of course, have our long-in-the-works Bali/Java/Kuala Lumpur jaunt coming up in May. Luckily (or unluckily--depending on how you look at it) we'll be crossing paths with the Bob and the Panda. The greater Indonesian population may be in store for a mass exodus once they get word. |
done charleston last year
|
Thanks for the thread, bookchick!
Off to Botswana in March. In December, I'm planning to go to Lyon for their annual Festival of Lights, where dozens of installations light up various buildings, churches, etc in the city center. As long as I'm going to Lyon, I'll stop off in nearby Paris and Hong Kong. NYC in spring to see The Glass Menagerie, and probably Revere Beach and the Brockton Fair as time permits. |
Either 1) Istanbul/Cairo, 2) NZ/Australia, 3) Hong Kong/Thailand or 4) Nowhere. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Just kidding. I am not an expert on airfares like some of you but I got what seemed like a good Y fare from Singapore airlines for New York, Frankfurt, Singapore, Tokyo, LA for $2k US all in (August 2010, no FF miles accrual and not their RTW fare). I could not get family agreement however. When did kids get to vote? |
Going to Israel in May with a local couple who has done this at least 6 times. We will have a Jewish guide who has served in the Israeli Army. My daughter is traveling with me. We will mainly be going to sites mentioned in the Bible or associated with History. Very excited about this trip as I have not been to the Middle East before.
|
I enjoy Asia as many of you do,but after 3 trips I am ready to explore other parts of the world. Enjoyed a cruise on Solstice Celebrity of The Greek Isles and Turkey out of Rome in Sept. Oct. 2009.
|
There's no reason to ever leave Cambridge. We'll be running our new furnace at maximum capacity and pretending it's Cambodia. The hot tub will be the Phuket substitute. A stroll through the expensive houses on Brattle Street will give us an English Manor sense. Thai food at Similans. What could be better?
We will be plodding off to Bali in May with his Bobness. |
I have no idea where we will be going in 2010. Ok, that's not totally true - we're headed to Kauai in February. But that's all that is firm right how. This will be a round number birthday year for me, so it seems like we should go someplace special (though a friend pointed out - "All the places you go are special, Kathie").
So we're in the "just thinking about it" stage. No doubt we'll throw in a few short trips, maybe a weekend in San Francisco or Vancouver, perhaps a gtg in Honolulu, but it's the big November trip we have to decide on. |
We'll be running our new furnace at maximum capacity and pretending it's Cambodia :)
The HT's will be going to the Maui Hyatt in Jan for our anniversary. Then to Kauai in Feb (maybe bump into Kathie and Cheryl). The last five days of March in Tokyo on a cheap air and hotel deal we got locally and hoping this to be peak cherry blossom time in Tokyo for all those who are interested in a prediction. SF in June then either Bangkok and Japan or S. Korea and Japan for three weeks in late Nov till early Dec. Trying to squeeze in Boston in Oct but Linda is having scheduling difficulties..... I would pay to see kuranosuke's (where are you hiding lol)2010 travel schedule ;) Happy New Year everyone! |
First trip will be in Jan. to Vietnam for two weeks and then 6 days in Tokyo and environs-first time to both! Hope to get back to Africa in 2010 also and will probably make another trip to France at some point. The travel year is still a work in progress.
|
I'm going to Tokyo & Kyoto in February and Maui in July with DH, DS and DD.
Hopefully I'll also have a 5 day trip in October with a friend - but that destination will be determined by work timing and great air fare sales! |
OK Guys have you all populated the Fodors calendar with your trips?
I am hoping to go to Tibet and if that does not work out Thailand - Laos - Cambodia or Russia. =-)
|
Bilt i cant get the link to work?
|
I'm in Austin at the moment. Just arrived last night from west Texas (Big Bend) where I saw Karl Rove driving his thoroughly un-American Range Rover in Marfa. Gag . . .
Leaving tomorrow for New Hampshire for a wedding, back on Jan. 4th until Jan. 23rd. Home to Indiana. Back in Austin late April to meet my new granddaughter. Stockholm in June. New Hampshire again over Labor Day. Somewhere in the spring to meet my best friend for a girl's weekend. Having dinner on Jan. 16th here in Austin with bonnieheather . . . no all GTGs occur in Boston! Bookchick: I hope you get continued positive reports at Dana-Farber! |
Nor can I, Smeagol.

Thank you, Indianapearl!
Yes, BillT, that was much better, thank you very much. BC |
my travel iti folder empty now, but trying to line up a trip to kahuku for some shrimp plate lunches. actually, was planning on west point, boulder, and lv in sep. but family wedding in kl canceled those plans.
ht, i see i've got a loooong way to go to catch up with you. lol. |
Like Kathie I have no firm plans for 2010 yet - still catching up on the blog for the fall trip in 2009. But Central Asia is top of my must-see list, perhaps with a swing through Tibet and Nepal back to India. Definitely feels like I've been out of Asia too long.
