Got a couple of questions. Suppose a peron's flight arrived HNL just before 8PM on a Friday night. Would it be too late to get to a place for a great sushi dinner? Is the Sheraton Wakiki ok? Where would a person go for sushi for breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday morning near that hotel?

mrwunrfl Jul 24th, 2006 07:29 PM

Or is Royal Hawaiian hotel worth $100 more for two nights?

MelissaHI Jul 24th, 2006 09:25 PM

Well.....you could not get sushi for breakfast, but if you are into Japanese style breakfast you could easily get that at the Sheraton Waikiki, the Moana Surfrider, or a little ways down at the Pacific Beach Hotel. (Probably the Waikiki Beach Marriott as well.)

There are good sushi bars in Waikiki, no worries. Otherwise there's Sasabune, which is open till 10.

Royal Hawaiian is definately worth $50 a nite more than Sheraton IMHO.

Beleive it or not I don't eat fish but ken will jump in on places to eat sushi....tons of them all over the place especially in Waikiki and surrounding areas as they cater to the Japanese tourists.

Aloha!

mwr, the sheraton is right next door to the royal hawn. don't know if the extra $100 is worth it, as i have never stayed at the rh.

if you arr at 8, it will around 9-930pm when you ck into your hotel. there should be a few sushi places open in waikik, all within walking distance of your hotel. i don't eat sushi in waikiki, or even visit waikiki(rarely), so i cannot rec. any sushi rest. i think you can try the suntory restaurant in the waikiki shopping center, just in front of the sheraton. it has a sushi bar.

as far as sushi on sat or sun morning, you might try the furusato restaurant at the hyatt hotel. the restaurant fronts kalakaua ave. i happened there one morning, and i saw sushi chefs at the counter. they serve japanese breakfast, so i think they also serve sushi. you might try this rest. for sushi on friday nite when you arrive.

as far as sasabune(not in waikiki), i have been there several times but not in the past two years. my friends and i call the sushi chef, sushi nazi. he is not friendly, never smiles, and tells you how to eat your sushi. i wouldn't mind it if he also paid for my sushi, but since i'm paying for it, i resent his attitude, and stopped going there. it is very pricey.

if you are leaving tue, we can go to my favorite place on monday nite.

ht, you no eat fish????

MelissaHI Jul 25th, 2006 11:19 AM

You're right! The main guy is a sushi nazi. But I haven't seen him for a while....much more pleasant. Still pricey, though.

mrw:

The RH exudes everything that is Hawaii. It was one of the first (first or second)hotels on Waikiki beach and just the history of the place is enough of a draw. The rooms, lobby, atriums are alot nicer, richer and recenlty refurbished as the Sheraton is any hotel you could find anywhere in the US with a nice view of Waikiki beach which needs an facelift soon. They are both Starwood resorts and I'm sure you have status with them that you could request an upgrade at checkin? If so be sure to request the ocean view in both hotels. If it were me I wouldn't hesitate to switch at $50 per nite. The room and atmosphere difference is like comparing the Oriental to the Westin Grande on Sukumvit in bkk, both nice hotels but the Oriental the better of the 2 with alot more history to the place. Hope I didn't confuse as I am writing this at work and multitasking :)

Aloha!

ok, thanks for the info. that covers the basics: lodging and sushi. I leave LAX at 9AM on 8/25 and leave HNL at 9PM on 8/27, on UA of course, and staying at the RH.

Wish I could be there. I'll be thinking of all of you. Have a glass of a nice red wine for me...

As long as you guys don't do the naked photos again this time, I'm in! Oh heck, even if we do DO the naked photos, Im in!!

As a matter of fact, last night I drove by the restaurant at about 6 pm and had a momentary panic...I knew it was the 26th and thought yesterday was August ! I started to call Melissa but luckily realized it was still July before I embarassed myself!

I have an excuse though...I just got back from California. The heat really did something to my brain!

See you all on August 26th.
