I had alot more luck with the publisher. They offered to make a copy of the new edition for me (B&W, tho, no color) and FedEx it to me (from Hong Kong, I think). Ultimately, I decided I'd rather go with the old edition because I thought it would be easier to travel with. But they really went out of their way to help. I'd be happy to loan you my copy when I return on Dec 1, if that helps.

i have six copies of each edition but i am not sharring them....oh does my lunch/dinner taste good...
FromDC-I'm going to try to obtain a used copy. If I'm unsuccessful, I will Whine further.
Just ordered ta used 3rd edition from Amazon to Threadsave for $19.50. We'll see.
If Bob had 6 copies of anything, you can bet 5 were free. He lives in Needham. The only guide he needs is to the mall. |
Good Luck Gpanda!

in this case a "used copy" refers to the copy that a certain attorney (use of this term is loose) "borrowed permanently" from the harvard wagner library's special collections....
Gpanda - if all else fails you'll be able to pick up a copy in the market in Siem Reap - they are very cheap (aboutUS$5) so I suppose they are copies (but good ones). They are everywhere. I know you'd like it before you go but its still worth getting there if you don't get the copy you've ordered. It would of course deprive Ms Rooney of her dues but then she won't get anything from the books if no- one is stocking them anyway!

The scheduling of the release of the 5th Edition has been very peculiar. First, it was due out in July, then October and now January. One wonders why the delays. Have they discovered new temples? Do the characters need sprucing up? Is there a Khmer holiday in January that will boost sales? Why?
they are trying to ruin your holiday is the reason for the book delay...
The Third Edition has arrived. Craig your probationary period is lifted. However, the book is very serious; Nary a joke to be found. It may be that Mrs. Panda will be required to read and interpret. We'll see.
joke...look in the mirror...
poor mrs gpanda....she has such a hard life...what with having to read to the gpanda and also collect all of his bamboo and the like, plus pick up after his mess.....
Pandas are near extinction. They should be cherished while they're still with us. Bankers, on the other hand, are a dime a dozen. That's 4 Baht. You can't ride the river ferry for that. You can cross twice.
poor mrs panda also is saddled with the ROS.....in her next life she will do better...
Just checked Amazon - I am wondering if its a misprint - the publication date for the 5th edition is now February 29, 2008???
did you see the post this weekend that the book is avaialble all over SR for $4??
Yes, Bob I did see that the book was available in SR but I would prefer to read it before I get there.
Only Bob would waste his time in Siem Riep reading when he could be looking at the actual temples. Of course, normal people want to read it first.
normal??? why be normal...its too damn hot to go out and look at those piles of rocks....especially when you can sit in a pool or a/c room and look at pictures that are perfectly taken of the best parts of the ruins...you might trip on a loose rock, or a snake might approach you or it might rain....normal what's normal...living in cambridge, riding a bike all over the place, running in road races with kids after 50...now thats normal...
On a more serious note, I assume everyone knows that the copies of Dawn Rooney books one buys in Siem Reap are just that - (not very good) copies. Info for those who respect intellectual property rights.
On a less serious note, I understand that Bob hired a guide in Siem Reap so he didn't have to read... |
