Sadly, this was our last day with our friend, Salem. And after 2 weeks of traveling with him, yes, he definitely became a friend to us. So our return to Marrakech was a bit sad - not only were we coming to the end of the trip, but it was also time to say goodbye to our delightful companion.
Our last 2 nights were spent in Marrakech at the Riad du Rabbin. My review on TripAdvisor: The riad is in a quieter part of the city at the edge of the mellah, and it is very pretty to look at, but we found that the place was eerily quiet most of the time we were there and we felt very much on our own in a not very comfortable way. The amenities are nice, the room is pleasant, but with only 3 rooms and a manager whose presence was limited, we found we were alone much of the time we were there. While a small riad could feel intimate, this did not - rather, it felt rather lacking in much human interaction. It didn't lack for amenities and generally it is attractive, and breakfast was good, so it's certainly a decent place to stay; but it missed the boat for us. In retrospect, it was not a bad place at all as far as the room or amenities, but the limited contact with staff made it uncomfortable. I wrote elsewhere that one of the things that I really liked on their website was the small pool, which is now mostly paved over. This irked me no end as it seemed to be selling a vision that is no longer there: https://www.riad-du-rabbin.com/ The Riad du Rabbin (today )https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fd3e23284e.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c5d8a49e44.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ddcdc302da.jpg If you look at the website, and look at the above photos, you'll see the difference. It's not bad, but it's not what is shown. Still, it's a decent place, and they had a good breakfast and the amenities in the room were good. If there were more of a presence of people around, it would've felt much more welcoming. |
Our last day in Marrakech was surprisingly busy; we visited several museums and other sights, and wandered the streets far away from the hectic and overwhelming Jemaa el-Fnaa. Although we didn't care that much for the Riad du Rabbin, it was pleasant staying in a quieter part of the medina.
The first place that I had planned to visit was the Ben Youssef Madrasa. After spending who knows how long trying to find it and convinced that we were standing near the entrance, we discovered that it was closed for restoration. Ah well, we are finding this everywhere we go. Nearby was the Marrakech museum, so we made a stop here instead. This is a late 19th century building, the Dar Menebhi Palace, that was turned into a museum; the art was not especially interesting, and I wouldn't have gone out of my way for this museum, but the atrium was striking, with its huge metal chandelier-like hanging. And finally, it was close to noon, the opening time for the stellar Maison de la Photographie, a small photography museum, yet a real gem with a remarkable collection of photos and films of the history of Morocco. This was well worth going out of the way to visit! Outside of the museum was also one of the best musicians we had heard on our trip, and we stopped and listened to him for a while. A truly lovely voice, and a gentle face that captured us. The last musician of our trip, and a wonderful way to wrap up our musical memories! We wandered the streets of the medina for a while, and somehow ended up in the area where there are several tanneries. It felt less touristy here, but not especially pleasant. We were looking for the gate that was closest to the Jardin Majorelle, the very popular garden that was created by a French artist in the 20s, and bought by Yves St-Laurent in the 80s. After finding the gate, we took a taxi to the museum and waited an hour to get in! The garden was pretty, though very crowded, but it was really the Berber museum that is the standout. Finally, we had enough of touring! Back to riad to pack up and rest. Our time in Morocco and, warts and all, it was a fascinating trip. And a special treat for all of you for following along on this visual journey with its musical theme threading through it: the lovely Marrakech musician, whose singing really moved us:

I'm sad for your journey to come to an end. This has been a spectacular TR. Kudos to you for taking the time to select the enticing photos and providing such descriptive details.
|
Thanks, yestravel! I’m really pleased that you’ve enjoyed the report, especially since we’ve shared this trip in so many ways! I must admit, I’m a bit sad that it’s done, too, but it is fun to see it unfold and experience it in its entirety.
|
Greetings from Berlin! Thank you so very much for a most excellent report - and for rekindling my interest in Morocco.
|
What an awesome trip report!! Thank you Progol for your hard work. Putting it all together must've taken hours and hours, but was hopefully a delightful trip down memory lane. It is a great pictorial reference for future Morocco planners.
Totally understand your frustration at the last riad. I've kicked myself in retrospect with some lodgings, wondering later how or why I chose them...then realize the way the places marketed themselves contributed to the decision.Grrrr... Still, what trip goes 100% perfectly as planned? The vimeo link doesnt work. )-: |
Thanks for the greetings from Berlin, tp! I’m pleased that you’ve continued on this journey and I looked forward to your trip planning!
CaliNurse,, many thanks for the lovely words! Although it was time consuming, It really is great to have this diary of sorts to be able to revisit our trip. So it’s satisfying to have it done. And it sure made my trip last Thanks for letting me know about the Vimeo link. I’ll have to figure that one out. |
Marrakech musician:
https://vimeo.com/user86494309/revie...225/54bef93f27 i hope this works! It looks like the same, link, and it seems configured correctly. Anyone else? Able to view or not? |
HI, all,
Trying again with the video: would someone let me know if it works or not: Marrakech musician: Thanks! |
I could hear & see the video shown in your post at 7:21. I think we saw the same guy:)
|
I'm glad it finally works! I'll bet he's a regular by the photography museum!
|
What a treat! Reading about your trip was both entertaining and informative, and the addition of all your beautiful photography was a fantastic bonus. Only a few weeks before we leave for Morocco (taking a ferry there after we travel south through Andalusia). So your report was especially timely and welcome. Thank you progol for creating it! And as CaliNurse points out, it will be a valuable resource for others.
|
Thanks so much, rje! I'm so glad you enjoyed this report! Now that we are able to post photos, it certainly cuts down on having to actually describe a place -- so I'm especially pleased that you appreciated the pictures. Have a fabulous trip to Andalusia and Morocco -- I'm sure you will have a wonderful time and will be getting some amazing photos as they are both such visual places to visit.

Wow, a terrific trip report which revived so many memories. Thanks Paule !
|
Thanks, Caroline! I'm pleased that this is bringing back good memories for you (at least, I hope they're good ;) )!

I've been on this forum for about 20 years and this is the best trip report I've ever read - and I've read hundreds! I would have enjoyed it in any case, but I found it because we ( a couple in our early 70s) are going to Morocco in the fall. We'll be following the basic tourist route - Fez, 5 days/4 nights with Desert Majesty to Marrakesh and ending with 3 nights in Essaouira. Aside from the driver/guide for 5 days we will be on our own but I think our riads will be very helpful to us. You have really given us such good tips and advice and I've made a note of the places of particular interest. After reading your report I think we will get a guide for half days on the 2 full days we will be in Fez as well as a half day guide in Marrakech to relieve us a bit from the hassle. Thank you so much for posting such a thoughtful and interesting and beautiful report!

linawood and akshay185 - thank you both so much!
linawood, I'm so pleased that this has been so helpful to you and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. The 3 nights in Essaouira will be very relaxing after the more intense experiences you'll have had. If there is anything else you want to know, feel free to ask here or to send me a message. Paule |
So interested to see Rabat and reading through the rest of the trip report too. delighted to see your photos.
|
Hi, wtb,
Yes, Rabat was a very pleasant way to start the trip. Much less hectic than Fes or Marrakech, but with a surprising number of sights to see and it's sited beautifully on the water. We really enjoyed our gentle introduction to Morocco. Glad you enjoyed the photos! |
Well I came to this report late , like today.
So I started right at the beginning and 1 hour and 20 minutes later , I am finished. Wow!!! What can I say that has not been said, lovely pictures , terrific commentary. It was a pleasure reading your report. Thank You so much for all the effort you put in to write this fabulous trip report |
Percy,
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the trip report as much as you have! And Morocco is so incredibly visual, it demanded a photo report for me to tell it right. ;) Thanks for letting me know. |
You did a Terrific Job with the Report.
Thank You ;) |
Many thanks again for your kind words, Percy! I'm really pleased that you enjoyed it.

progol.....just found your illuminating TR and stunning photos in time to help with my trip planning. Had browsed through Fodor's guidebook on Morocco to scope out our preliminary plan of attack..but your details and feelings about your experiences are invaluable.
First. I'm in love with Blue cities for their photographic value, so enjoyed reading your account of Chefchaouen which makes me rethink going there...however, worth it probably just for those pictures! Did you consider staying in Tangiers for a couple of nights? I'm considering that and then just one night in the blue city. Funny, I was going to skip Essaouia but need a second look after your preference for it. I also wasn't planning on Rabat, but again will think of it as an intro. I had already decided on using the services of Salem after reading later TR's based on your initial recommendation. I generally like to pick my own places to stay but it sounds like he can offer good recommendations. We had used a similar type local driving & arrangements service when visiting India also with excellent results and I prefer that it a more challenging environment. I definitely want to stay at Dar Seffarine based on your experience. I especially like having a great restaurant where I'm staying to avoid going out after a long tiring day. And, I want a bit of a desert experience but don't want a whole day of driving...so more research on that. We will skip Volubous and Meknes....just not that into ruins and we did the see the mosaics at Villa Casale in Sicily. Anyway, this is one to save and savor! Thanks so much for your diligence in posting! |
Thanks so much, barefootbeach! I’ve seen your posts throughout the years and have always enjoyed them! We only had a little over 2 weeks, so we had to be selective with our days, I would’ve liked to have included Tangiers, but it wasn’t possible to see everything. Chefchaouen, of course, is as pretty as can be — very touristy, but yes, the blue photos are really fun. My initial plan did not have us going to Essaouira, and I was SO glad I included it! It’s hard to pick favorites, but this was a place that has really stayed with us. An extra night would’ve been great, but even the one night was good enough, as we had most of the first day and till late morning the next day to wander. It’s just such a lovely place. Dar Seffarine was one of my favorite places to stay! And their dinners were excellent. It was such a treat staying there - great owners who are fixing it up beautifully. I really liked Rabat - we chose to stay there rather than Casablanca to put us in driving distance of Chefchaouen, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. And it’s not nearly as intense as Marrakech or Fes (although those are both amazing and crazy to see). And Salem, of Moroccan Family, of course, is a gem! And others on Fodors have since worked with him, and have also found him terrific. I know his companionship made the trip as special as it was. Feel free to ask away! I’m glad to answer what I can. |
A nice report & great pictures progol. I have been off the forum for a while & it was nice to catch up.
On the subject of touts . . . I read here many years ago that the touts of Istanbul were just a warm up for touts of Marrakesh & that is so true. Ian |

Hi progol, another question for you. When did you start using Salem for your journey? Did he pick you up at the airport in Casa and drive you to Rabat or did you start with him when you left Rabat? if he didn''t get you at the airport, how did you get to Rabat? Thanks for the info!

Thanks MmePerdu for the info. I looked it up and it does involve a transfer. That's more than my jet lagged mind/body will want to handle on arriving so I'll look into some type of private transfer.
|
Hi, barefootbeach, Salem picked us up at the airport and we drove to Rabat from there. Just an FYI, Salem wasn’t my agent on the trip, but was the driver that my agent had hired. As I’ve said many times, Salem was an absolute gem, and if I do go back, I would hire him directly next time. While public transportation is doable in Morocco, I was very happy to have a driver, as we covered a fair amount of territory in a relatively short time period, and we didn’t have to deal with city parking. |
thanks progol, that's how I want to do it. Picked up at airport by a reputable driver...no worries.
|
Hi, barefootbeach, Being picked up at the airport works for me! Hi, crispmuncher, Glad you like the photos! paule |
Thank you
Your photos are absolutely breathtaking. One of my friends and I are thinking of going to morocco but are having trouble finding a tour. It will be two females traveling by ourselves so we would feel much more comfortable with the tour. Did the tour company set up your itinerary, I see that you did a lot of the hotel booking. |
Hi, yeadonite,
Many thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the photos! It is one of the most visually stunning places I've visited. It's almost impossible to take a bad photo. I worked with a small agency (Berber Space Morocco), but I had a pretty good idea of my itinerary when I contacted him. Hassan, the agent, and I tweaked my itinerary, but it was essentially mine from the start. Our agreement was that he would book most, but not all, the hotels, and he offered me choices in each location. He didn't have relationships with some of the hotels I wanted, so I booked directly with the hotels in Fes (Dar Seffarine - amazing!!) and Marrakech. I hired an agent primarily because I wanted to have a driver, and I wasn't comfortable hiring a driver from the states. I believe it's pretty easy to arrange drivers once you get to Morocco and it's also relatively easy to travel on your own. But hiring a driver turned out to be a godsend, as Hassan arranged for us to have Salem as our driver, who also has his own agency, Moroccan Family. Salem was a gem and we really enjoyed our time with him. In so many ways, his companionship made the trip and it was very personalized to our interests. If you have any other questions, let me know! |
Hi Progol,
I enjoyed this TR and the images. Hope that your next trip is just as enjoyable! I am done. The end. |
Thank you for a wonderful trip report and visual feast.
Hi Progol,
We are planning a trip to Morocco in September and I just stumbled upon your TR. It has helped me tremendously in planning our adventure, and your pictures are dazzling. Bravo! Would you advice taking a DSLR given the antipathy to photographers you mentioned? If you did take one, what camera did you use? Thanks again for a great report. |
Hi, reddy2go! I’m so glad that you enjoyed this report and found it helpful in planning! Morocco is a stunning country and I hope you have a wonderful time!
As far as photography, of course you will be able to take photos! And a DSLR is fine. It’s more about being both sensitive and culturally aware - something we always need to be mindful of, though especially so in a traditional culture such as Morocco. Also, if you do go into the desert, know that sand gets into everything! Our poor little point-and-shoot wasn’t the same after being exposed in the desert during the windstorm! Feel free to ask any more questions you might have. |
Hi,
Thank you so much for sharing the photos! They completely convinced me that a trip to Morocco is a great idea! My boyfriend and I are planning a trip at the end of the year Hope Covid doesn't get in the way ... again |
