Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa

Opened in summer 2012 as one of the Amalfi Coast's most spectacular boutique resorts, the much-anticipated Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa is already helping to redefine the region's resort scene and, we think, will come to embody the perfect Amalfi getaway. The monastery complex was first erected on the cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Salerno in the 17th century, then converted into one of Italy's castle hotels in the 1920s before eventually falling into disrepair. Purchased by new owners in 2000, the meticulously restored and reinvented property strives in every way to preserve the history and legacy of its location, which is as much a part of the landscape as the cliffs themselves. The structural integrity of the buildings has been maintained, and local stones have been used to rebuild the gardens' walls, stairs, and paths. Vaulted ceilings remain in the guest rooms, which are named after herbs that would have been grown by the nuns who once lived here. And every year during the Festival of Santa Rosa, the hotel plans to distribute traditional sfogliatelle pastries, originally baked by the monastery's nuns, to local children.
