The Plaza Mayor, or Central Plaza, of Ayacucho. The statue commemorates Antonio José de Sucre, the Venezuelan liberator who, once things had been wrapped up in Ecuador and in his own country, joined his fellow Venezuelan Simón Bolívar in the liberation of Peru, which he achieved at the Battle of Ayacucho nearby in 1824. (Hence the “Bi[c]entenario” at the base of the statue.)
