The Cenotaph for the Victims of the Atomic Bomb was built in 1952 in the Peace Memorial Park. Inside contains the names of all the known victims of the bombing, regardless of nationality. Names are added to these registries each year. The memorial is shaped like a roof, designed with the intent to shelter the souls of those lost to the bombing, and it is engraved with the words, "Let all the souls here rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the evil.”
