Yellowstone Closed!
Yellowstone National Park is closed to due flooding and rock slides. This includes fishing access sites on the rivers in the area. Just an FYI if that is on your itinerary. Bridges have been washed out. All YNP entrances closed.

People who are in the park can leave, but I do not think they have to as long as they want to. I think they hope to open the southern entrance tomorrow.

This is horrible. I've just spent the past hour reading accounts on TA of people who are stuck in the park, visitors who arrived to the flood, and countless visitors who are scrambling to change their plans, some with non-refundable plane tickets and hotel bookings. Many are trying to flee to Grand Teton, and Jackson is inundated. The Teton fairgrounds have been opened to evacuees.
What a mess. It'll probably take years for the park to recover and I really feel for all those visitors who made their plans and bookings last year, not to mention residents who have lost homes to the flooding. A sad day indeed. |

The local footage is incredible. There is a video of employee housing being swept into the river in Gardiner. A friend who works for the park lost their barn in Gardiner but thankfully not the house. My daughter is at orientation at Montana State this week, and two of the guys in her group are from Red Lodge. One's house is flooded but thankfully it sounds like water and power have been restored.

They mention that the southern loop isn't likely to reopen for at least 5 days and they may implement a reservation system when it does. Just saw that they were able to open a route heading north out of Gardiner https://www.facebook.com/people/Park...0064731036817/ |
Patty, they opened 89 to get visitors out today and locals can now use it to come and go.

Some of my favorite places. I was really surprised to see the closure news yesterday morning and shocked seeing the footage in the evening. I feel awful for the residents, business owners and even tourists. I remember jumping through hoops trying to get that reservation for the Old Faithful Lodge and taking my boys to the pig races near Red Lodge.

Wow, this is bad. There is supposed to be a small blast of monsoonal weather coming through this weekend (great news for the Southwest), followed by a warmup. With the heavy snowpack this year things are still dicey...
We have a trip planned there for late August. Guess we will see. |

Just a super sad week for tourists, local communities and all the employees who were planning on spending their summer working in the park. In an interview in the Missoulian yesterday said it will take years to repair all the damage to roads and they are even rethinking if roads should be repaired after the massive destruction and the possibility that this could happen in the future. If you're planning on going to Glacier, they've implemented a ticket system to get into the park so it's not possible to just go and get in. Amazing that there were no fatalities. Our world seems very fragile right now.

Sounds like the park superintendent is reluctant to spend tens of millions of dollars restoring the highways in the north if they are just likely to be flooded out again. When the southern loop re-opens Old Faithful and Yellowstone Lake will be accessible but not the famous Lamar Valley with its wolves, elk, bison and grizzlies.
