Wyoming Music
Don't laugh! :) I have seen all the posts on Hawaiian music, so I decided to ask about some "out west" music. When we were at the Grand Canyon, we bought some Native American music, and that went perfectly with the areas we visited. What wonderful ambiance it created listening to those CDs as we drove through such awesome scenery from Zion, to GC, to Bryce, etc.
We are going to Yellowstone, Cody, Tetons, and Jackson in 2 weeks. So, do you have any suggestions, or do we just pull out the Native American stuff we bought at the G.C.? Thanks! Speedy |
Try Brule also should be able to find some Sioux and Cheyenne music at state parks if Borders or Amazon doesn't have them. By the way some of the mainland tribal dancers have appeared at different Hawaiian festivals as a form of sharing cultures.

One of my favorite John Denver tunes is Song of Wyoming...a mellow sit around the campfire guitar type song. The album is called Windsong...
Since we too played Native American music at the Grand Canyon, I agree with you...it would be appropriate for your trek through Wyoming. You are doing the trip we plan next when heading out west. For now, I will have to settle for Hawaii next week! |
Speedy,
We also like to buy music that is from the area as we travel. Etch the scenery and music into our minds, and then recall it all when we play it at home. In fact, we were just playing our "Wyoming music" today over Sunday breakfast, and it was wonderful. This is specific, but we bought "Teton Seasons, Images for Solo Piano" by Jan Levinson from Jackson, WY Maybe not a whole lot different from other piano music, but we remember hearing it as we watched the steam rise throughout Yellowstone, and took in the beauty of the Tetons. |
The Brokeback Mountain soundtrack.

You guys are awesome!!! :) I wondered if I'd get any responses, but you knew EXACTLY what I was talking about.
Hulajake, I'm looking up Brule now, and will look for the Sioux and Cheyenne music immediately when we get there. Nannymer, we love John Denver - thanks for the reminder, and I won't say I feel sorry for you that you have wait until after your trip to *Hawaii.* ;-) Clousie, you nailed it on the head, and described every wonderful trip we go on. And thanks for being specific!:) AuntAnnie, my wife got the book Close Range: Wyoming Stories, by Anne Proulx (from which the screenplay came) to read at night on our trip. Don't know why we didn't think of the soundtrack - thanks! :) |
I found 2 more by John Denver, Yellowstone and Montana Skies with Emmy Lou Harris. :)
|
I am an Annie Proulx fan! The Shipping News is one of my fav books.
I think you will like the soundtrack; I esp. love the guitar instrumentals...as I was watching the movie I was thinking "I love this guitar music!" Have a great trip! |
I have added to my list:
Meet Me in Montana and the Dances with Wolves soundtrack. Any more suggestions? |
These are great SpeedBuggy. I need to be working on this too. We go the third week of Sept. REALLY looking forward to it!
I'll see if I can find some good tunes to add to your list (and mine). Are you on your trip now? I hope you are feeling better! Take good care of yourself! :) |
John Denver music would be good.
One of my favorite soundtracks is "Jeremiah Johnson" although it was filmed in Utah. I checked to see where "A River Runs Through It" was filmed. It's Montana - not Wyoming (but to me they are very similar - at least from the view of trout streams). And, you ought to toss in a Cowboy CD. My sister bought a fun one at a trading post in Arizona. I bet they will be on sale in Wyoming as well. I like the idea of buying a CD from a local WY artist. |
Hi SpeedBuggy, are you getting ready to leave on your trip and are you feeling alright now? I saw your post where you were having some health problems, I hope that you are doing alright and consequently can take your road trip to Wyoming.
|
SB, if you haven't seen Jeremiah Johnson (or if it's been 20-30 years), rent it and watch it again before you go on your trip. I re-read your travel locations and so many scenes from JJ comes to mind. (Can you tell I LOVE the movie? :-)

Sorry folks....
Narrator: [Opening lines] His name was Jeremiah Johnson, and they say he wanted to be a mountain man. The story goes that he was a man of proper wit and adventurous spirit, suited to the mountains. Nobody knows where abouts he come from and don't seem to matter much. He was a young man and ghosty stories about the tall hills didn't scare him none. He was looking for a Hawken gun, .50 caliber or better. He settled for a .30, but damn, it was a genuine Hawken, and you couldn't go no better. Bought him a good horse, and traps, and other truck that went with being a mountain man, and said good-bye to whatever life was down there below. ----- Jeremiah Johnson: Y'ever get lonesome? Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Fer what? Jeremiah Johnson: Woman? Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Full time night woman? I never could find no tracks on a woman's heart. I packed me a squaw for ten year, Pilgrim. Cheyenne, she were, and the meanest bitch that ever balled for beads. I lodge-poled her at Deadwood Creek, and traded her for a Hawken gun. But don't get me wrong; I loves the womens, I surely do. But I swear, a woman's breast is the hardest rock that the Almighty ever made on this earth, and I can find no sign on it. |
If you are near Pinedale, Wyoming you may want to check out the Mountain Man museum.
http://www.museumofthemountainman.com/home.htm They had their replica rendezvous in July. I'm going to have to go one year. The annual rendezvous is where the mtn men would meet up to sell pelts, party and take their annual bath (unless they were in Yellowstone in winter and they'd bathe again in the thermal springs) :-) |
What great ideas, Starrsville!
I sure hope you are doing well, SB. I haven't seen you posting much lately. Fodors was becoming quite a hobby for you. Many of us consider you our friend, and we are wishing you well! I think you said you were leaving on this trip in a couple of weeks, which I was taking to mean around Labor Day. Please let us know how things are going! :) |
On our childhood trips to Wyoming, it was Sons of the Pioneers the whole way!
|
You must have been "drifting along with the tumbling tumbleweeds".
|
I recently downloaded that one from iTunes, RedRock, for my trip. What a great song, huh? And it reminds me of my dad, who loved the west - probably why I love it so much! :)
|
I think we are dating ourselves. I can remember the Saturday afternoon movies with Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers. If you could talk your mom or dad out of 25¢ you could go to a movie, get popcorn and a Pepsi. Boy am I getting old!
