Would you join in a tourism boycott?
I'm not trying to start a debate about the underlying issue, but I'm curious if anyone else has been reading with interest the movement toward a boycott of tourism in South Dakota. This following the state's new law that bans most abortions.
If you disagreed, would you change travel plans? Not make future plans? If you supported the state, would you go out of your way to travel there on vacation? Me, I support the boycott and wouldn't go there. I actually was there last year and had been making plans to return, so it's not just empty talk. But I wonder if anyone else feels this way. |
No, it wouldn't change my plans either way. I think a boycott would hurt the state a bit with decreased revenue, but at the same time it would hurt individuals who depend on tourism for part or all of their livelihood. The state can afford to take the hit better than the individuals, so any boycott may end up hurting innocent bystanders (so to speak).

Bring back Bill Janklow!!!

Ooh, this is a touchy subject. But let's just say that when I see a state pass particularly mean-spirited, regressive and/or anti-human rights laws, I just scratch it off my list of places to visit. The people who elect public officials that enact legislation specifically designed to keep certain people In Their Place just aren't people I want to be around.
|
No - I would not join a tourism boycott. I don't have firm plans to go to S.D. this year, but if I can carve out some time to go to Custer State Park, I'll go.
|
It really is unfortunate when people who "depend on tourism for their livelihood" don't think of the possible economic repercussions of legislation which probably has the least amount of effect on the legislators who are wealthy enough to get around it (by going elsewhere for their "treatments") as it is going through the law-making process.
|
The exact opposite to this "not trying to start a debate" thread is the simple fact that there are just as many people or more applauding South Dakota for protecting human life. Those of us who support their legislation will be making a special trip to spend lots of money in their State!
|
Yes Intrepid, that is true, but it's not like every individual in the state voted for the current officeholders.
|
Spinedoc, read my original post again. I didn't write that I didn't want to start a debate. I wrote that I didn't want to start a debate about abortion, and so far, everyone has been civil about that. I asked specifically if you supported the state would you go there, and I'm glad to hear your response. I'm not sure why you think your post is the exact opposite of what I asked, though.

sfamylou,
My bad..I missed your 3rd paragraph. However as you are well aware this thread will spark quite a debate and that is the beauty of the USA. |
South Dakota is no place I want to visit so the question is purely retorical
and obviously this thread *will* start a debate "about the underlying issue" |
rhetorical
|
I hope we can all focus on whether we would cancel a trip or not, based on politics, and avoid the underlying debate. I didn't want to be a trouble maker. I hope that if this thread goes down that path that it gets shut down quickly.
|
No. I would not join in a boycott of SD. If anything I would make it a point to go there in support of their decision.
|
If I boycotted every state than had policies I didn't believe in, I couldn't go anywhere. In fact I'd have to move -- but can't imagine where I could move to.
And the idea that SD is no state to visit -- wow. Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, Badlands, Wind and Jewel Caves --some of the most beautiful scenery in the west. |
boycotting somewhere because they ban abortion is just purely messed up. How stupid can you get?
Now boycotting somewhere because of they target foriegners for crimes but are relaxed on their own citizens (like letting them out of jail for multiple murders after 18 months) well thats another story. |
No, I wouldn't join such a boycott. I find myself at odds with many of my state and country's laws but hope tourists won't boycott coming here!
|
OH and ditto to the previous poster.
|
I refuse to go to Canada until there is a permanent ban on the killing of harp seal pups. So, yes, I would boycott a place for political reasons.
