ohh bodi wonderful ideas for bad hair days. I have a simply awesome leopard print hat that I did put on in Las Vegas one rainy day that looking back at the pictures was rather nice. The best place for hair I ever had was at the Frontenac in Quebec City. San Diego CA my hair looked oh so bad.

bodi Oct 3rd, 2004 04:21 PM

how do you go about finding a good salon when traveling?

muffin Oct 3rd, 2004 04:57 PM

As far as finding a good salon when traveling I will usually just walk around the area and you are almost sure of finding a salon. You can usually just "feel" a good place when you walk in and talk to the people.

So far you've all forgotten one of the most important things. On arrival check to make sure the alarm clock is turned off. I always get the room where the previous tenant had a 4AM plane to catch and the alarm is still set to ON.

Marilyn Oct 3rd, 2004 06:18 PM

Patrick, been there, done that, hope to never do it again! Good tip!

bonniebroad Oct 3rd, 2004 06:28 PM

Patrick........ that business with the alarm clock....... just happened to me at the Residence Inn in Wilmington in August. I'd just gotten my exhausted granddaughter to sleep, I was just dropping off, and the radio/alarm blasted out right by my head, scared the be-jiminies out of me! >:o Had never happened to me before!

Patrick Oct 3rd, 2004 06:32 PM

I'm a slow learner. It's happened to me a LOT! But of course only on the mornings I plan to sleep in.

jewelhawg Oct 3rd, 2004 06:35 PM

That mysterious alarm clock thing has happened to me a couple of times...and I still keep forgetting to check when I first arrive.

Even stranger~ I got an early morning wake-up call one morning that I didn't request. Maddening! >:o

Meesthare Oct 3rd, 2004 06:35 PM

Marilyn, since you specifically asked me about how to choose which bed to use, I will tell you the principles I always follow: first, look at both beds. Determine if there is anyone in either of them. There are various ways of doing this, some of which involve a flying leap and a fairly solid landing, but you can design your own method. Should you discover that one of the beds is indeed occupied, the next question is whether the occupant is someone known to you. If not, I would recommend sleeping in the unoccupied bed. If, however, the person you discover is actually the person you have been travelling with, then you base your choice on whether or not you are in the habit of sharing a bed with this individual under normal circumstances.
Should both beds be unoccupied, the question becomes far more complex. Perhaps then, the coin toss method would be the best, or if you do not have a coin, consult a psychic advisor because they're really good at stuff like that.

LOLLLL Meesthare, this MUST be topped!!

Marilyn Oct 4th, 2004 11:00 AM

Meesthare, it sounds like a very exciting evening!
(Thanks for the guffaw! I had to call Phil Flash in to read your oh-so-valuable advice.)

Meesthare Oct 4th, 2004 11:06 AM

It's a pleasure to amuse my Fodorite colleagues! :-d

Elizabeth Oct 4th, 2004 11:25 AM

Warning this post may be frightening: last time I checked into a hotel, in the bathroom I found these rectangular soft white things. I looked and looked at all the printed stuff on the desk but I couldn't find out what the white things were for, so I stuffed them in my tote bag & disposed of them in a public trashcan

and then that night when I got back to the hotel there were more of them there.

What would you do about this?

(I did not want to mention them at the desk because I was afraid they would blame me & accuse me of placing the white things in the bathroom, like they usually do.)

Marilyn Oct 4th, 2004 11:28 AM

Elizabeth, if you leave a big enough tip for housekeeping, they will stop leaving the white things in your bathroom. $10 a day ought to do it.

tieurown Oct 4th, 2004 11:34 AM

perhaps the white things = hotel bath cloths.

Meesthare Oct 4th, 2004 11:40 AM

Elizabeth, were these white things initially wrapped in paper, and did they go all mushy when you put them in water? Or were they joined together on a sort of rolling dispenser attached to the wall in the bathroom? Without this important information it is very hard to help you with this obviously serious problem.

indie Oct 4th, 2004 11:43 AM

meesthare

accompanied by appropriate warning - flying leap could cause damage to bed or individual/objects occupying the bed. Flying leaper could be injured due to presence of other objects in bed (like suprise gift from loving hubby)

Meesthare Oct 4th, 2004 11:47 AM

Quite right. I was hoping somebody would pick up on my error, which I discovered after posting. The way to solve this is to yell "Yee-haw!" just prior to leaping. This would enable any animate creature to roll to safety, be it human, bunny rabbit, etc. Of course this does still leave us with the question of inanimate objects. Hopefully the bedclothes will provide a sort of buffer, lessening any possible damage to leaper or bed contents.

indie Oct 4th, 2004 11:51 AM

LOL meesthare!!

bonniebroad Oct 4th, 2004 12:04 PM

Is there any way to give a thread a XXX Rating in the title after proceeding this far??? :-d

atilla Oct 4th, 2004 12:09 PM

The human, bunny rabbit or whatever unfortunate creature may be hiding in the bed should henceforth be referred to as the leapee.
:-)

Marilyn Oct 4th, 2004 12:13 PM

atilla, I respectfully disagree. I think the unfortunate creature in the bed should be referred to as "toast."

Tandoori_Girl Oct 4th, 2004 12:24 PM

Some of you may be be wondering about the small box next to the bed that has a cord and multiple buttons to push. It was difficult for me to figure out what it was but I finally pushed enough buttons and then a person arrived at my door and was able to tell me that it is a communications device. I promptly asked the individual to lay prone on the bed so that I, the leaper, could decide which of the two flat fluffy body-size boxes to abide in. He was very accomodating. Now whenever I'm in such a fix I push a myriad of buttons and eventually an obliging person will arrive at my door. This is called room service.

seetheworld Oct 4th, 2004 12:29 PM

meesthare: You must be clairvoyant! If I cannot find a quarter, I always call the psychic to help with major decisions. If for some reason, I cannot contact the psychic, I pull out my magic *8* ball - that without a doubt - never fails :-D

atilla Oct 4th, 2004 12:31 PM

Leapee, toast, also know as "history".

ncgrrl Oct 4th, 2004 12:37 PM

While a bunny or human might move when the leaper screams "Yee-haw" the big, giant spider in my hotel room this past weekend did no such thing when I shocked to find out I had to share my room. Yet another good reason to wear sturdy shoes -- bug smashing.

Elizabeth Oct 4th, 2004 12:38 PM

re: q about white things - sorry, I was unclear, I think because of the PTSD I got from the white things - they were pretty big (scarier!!) and made of scarey cloth with loops in it.

razzledazzle Oct 4th, 2004 01:21 PM

You all have turned my Monday
around!
Thank you! Thank you!
=D>
Yet..I have some questions...
:-?
As many of you know from a previous post, I have a fear of those
"Magic Finger" devices and Meesthare has my head spinning about THIS
being the possible inanimate object
that has migrated from beneath the bed
to....**gasp**... under the covers.
=-O
Methinks a good "YeeHaw" would be of litle use (though quite fun!)in such a situation.
What's a girl to do...throw quarters at it????

GoTravel Oct 4th, 2004 01:23 PM

Did anyone else hear that?

Marilyn Oct 4th, 2004 02:23 PM

razzle, I recommend a baseball bat. Of course, you will need one that fits in your check-in luggage as nowadays they won't let you on the plane with it in your carry-on.

Note to ncgrrl: works on spiders, too.

This thread was just referred to in another post I read, and I had such fun reading it (boring Saturday night:( ) that I have to bring it back to the top to share.
