Wicked in SF this Weekend - Attire Question

This is a silly question, but I really don't know the answer...

We are going to SF for the first time this weekend and have tickets to a matinee of Wicked at the Orpheum.

What is normal attire for a matinee at this venue? We will most likely leave our North Beach hotel in the morning to go around the city and won't return before the performance.

We are trying to figure out how dressed up we should be for this event.

Thanks for any help!

Gee, what a letdown. I thought your title meant you were going on a wild weekend in San Francisco and were looking for suggestions on what constitutes provocative clothing!
Now that I've read our posting in full and have calmed down.....I think the correct answer is "neat casual."

Hi jlh370, you don't have to get real dressed up. Neat casual as Howard said will be just fine. Have fun!!

Neat casual will be more dressed up than a significant number of audience members, so you should be fine in such attire.

Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately, it looks like anything goes. Even in the evening, even in the opera you can see it all - jeans, Hawaiian shorts, stuffed backpacks. No respect.

What? No green recommendations? The thing has been in New York and Chicago to wear green to the performance. You don't need to dress up, but green would be good.

HUH? Why green?

toncasmo Aug 30th, 2005 04:22 PM

what about evening performance? do i need to get really dressed up??

seetheworld Aug 30th, 2005 04:25 PM

Patrick, is that for real, wearing grean to a performance or are you just pulling our collective legs??

seetheworld Aug 30th, 2005 04:27 PM

Yup, I did mean "green".

LoveItaly Aug 30th, 2005 04:27 PM

toncasmo, you can get dressed up if you want, or wear decent casual if you want. You will see everything in the way of wardrobes. In SF "anything" goes so dress in the way that will make you comfortable and happy.

I'm guessing people would wear green to Wicked because of the Wicked Witch of the West?

I'd wear green, too, as Patrick suggested. I read Wicked the book about a year ago - EXCELLENT! Who would have thought to give the Wicked Witch of the West a real personality before her house-bound demise? I think you'll really enjoy the performance from the wonderful reviews I've read, jlh370. Whatever you wear, be comfortable - no one will see you as you watch the matinee anyway. ;) If in doubt, take a jacket/tie (nice necklace/scarf for women, fyi) but leave it in the car for easy retrieval in case you feel compelled to dress it "up" before formally entering the matinee.
