Who Are Your Favorite Posters?

I would like to do a poll of favorite posters. We are all quick to tell someone when we think their posts are irrelevant, but I don't think we say "thank you" enough to the really helpful posters. I post, in my opinion, a lot of what I feel to be helpful info, but don't really know if other people are finding it to be so. With a poll, we could tell people we appreciate them.

Some people who come to my mind on the US Forum are: Annemarie, Bart, Martha Python, Dan Woodlief, cmcdaniel, Frank and Joseph. Many others have helped me a lot, but their names aren't coming to me at the moment. Anyway, guys, thanks!

Zelda May 11th, 2000 07:21 AM

Until this posting, you were.

noname May 11th, 2000 08:14 AM

This post is irrelevant!

John May 11th, 2000 08:30 AM

What is this? Another travel agents stroking his buddies' soft underbelly?

Samantha May 11th, 2000 08:47 AM

Personally, I feel posters who do contribute a lot to this forum ARE thanked for their help, advice and opinions. The particular post seems very "junior high schoolish" to me. This isn't a popularity contest and I'm sure the mature people who do help others don't want some sort of "high fives" in their honor. Just IMHO, of course.

A/K/A May 11th, 2000 09:44 AM

A very large percentage of posters use multiple or anonymous e-mail addresses, so how would you vote for them?

Pollster May 11th, 2000 11:10 AM

What a bunch of asses some of you can be! It was just a suggestion, all in good fun, to pat a few people on the back who go to a lot of trouble to help others. Junior high schoolish? Well, so what? Wouldn't hurt for all of us to act 13 once in awhile!

Anyway, I think a lot of you are just ready & waiting to pounce on anybody who says the slightest thing that you can disagree with or find "irrelevant."

So crawl back in your cages now, and wait for the next person who may be slightly off the mark, according to YOUR thinking!

boohoo May 11th, 2000 11:23 AM

Ooooh! A temper tantrum, because he/she can't have his/her way. Did you say 13? I'd say more like 3.

Keith's Nan May 11th, 2000 11:43 AM

Pollster, perhaps you should change boards. Go to Caribbean On Line, we enjoy each other there and do thank each other for valuable info. Looks like you are just barking up a dead tree. There is nothing like us "ugly americans."

imadrunk1 May 11th, 2000 03:44 PM

....the answer is obvious...

NOAH/NOACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pollster May 11th, 2000 04:26 PM

Don't blame this one on Noah (he gets blamed for enough of his own doing, without getting blamed for mine); I'm just a back-patter who lavishes compliments on people - a little childish perhaps, but just my nature! Guess I'll just add it to my list of idea that went over like lead balloons!

IMHO May 11th, 2000 05:06 PM

AMS of course! Because he gets everyone so riled up. It is fun to see the fur fly!

Rudeness May 11th, 2000 05:43 PM

Mr./Ms. Pollster:
You should be aware of the fact (if you're not already) that the 'American forum' is quite different than the others at Fodor's. The Euro forum is intelligent, witty, civilized, and quite funny. There is plenty of acknowledgement of appreciation for frequent contributors. I virtually never se anyone 'flamed' as is so very common here. The other forums seem less active, but also very civil. This one's the rude exception. Don't take it personally.

noname May 11th, 2000 05:49 PM

I'm one of the people Pollster named and just wanted to say--I appreciate your comments and am glad to know some of my contributions have been helpful.

Guys, is it any wonder people post anonymously? Look at these responses! They are counterproductive. There are plenty of lurkers who could make valuable contributions to this board but will never post a word for fear of being flamed. Anonymous or not, your rudeness stings and we all lose because of it. Its a sad commentary on the times.

April May 11th, 2000 07:38 PM

Yes, it truly is sad, noname/nofame. Someone writes an innocent posting and a few people have to make wisecracks. Maybe there could be a separate forum for those who prefer to do nothing but snipe at one another.

I appreciate many people on the Fodor's site but obviously not most of the these dumbheads who post with phoney names & emails.

nothanks May 11th, 2000 10:25 PM

Am I the only one whose e-mail box has been filled with unsolicited travel newsletters, hotel ads, etc...since posting my real name and address on this forum? Since it's the only travel forum I visit, I know that someone, Fodor's or whomever, is gathering e-mail addresses and using them for mass marketing purposes. I no longer post my real name or address for that reason. Tired of ads and most definitely do want my e-mail available to some of the psychos who frequent this place.

nothanks May 11th, 2000 10:27 PM

Make that DO NOT want my e-mail available to psychos. Sorry all you psychos, bet you got your hopes up there.

Ralph May 11th, 2000 11:51 PM

Interesting that the names of posters who've helped you a lot "aren't coming" to you. Yet, you're hoping someone here will respond with your name, whatever it is.

Samantha May 12th, 2000 03:02 AM

Maybe the originator of this post would be seen in a different light, had he/she given their real name/addy as opposed to an anonymous one. Me thinks maybe the person is someone who feels underappreciated in their prior helpful postings, thus wanting recognition to make them feel better. Can you tell I'm wanting to go to college for a Psychology degree? ;-)

Keith's Nan May 12th, 2000 06:36 AM

Post my real EMail address - NO WAY. I learned the hard way early on when I started using these boards. The nasty filth I received was terrible. I did feel bad about some who tried to contact me to ask questions directly, but will continue now to use an alias. I have "talked" off line with some with their permission and then gave them my actual email address. One good thing was one of the nasties was caught via his/her IP address. There are some really great people in this world, too bad some of the pent up hostility of others comes out in the strangest of places and not on their shrinks couch.

Pollster May 12th, 2000 07:46 AM

Regarding REAL e-mail addresses, when using my genuine address, I've gotten e-mails from a couple of people that made my skin crawl! Actually frightened me a little, so I vowed not to post my real address again. It's an unfortunate fact of the Internet that you can't trust everybody!

dan woodlief May 12th, 2000 09:35 AM

In regards to e-mail addresses, I can understand where others are coming from, but I had rather post the real thing. I do get junk, but not an unmanageable amount. I have gotten pretty good with deleting. I only open about 25% or less of the mail I receive. I have never received any insulting e-mails as a result, other than advertising or job offers that I wouldn't accept in a million years. Since I have been on this site, I have used a fake address only on one occasion. I always love to get questions from other Fodors users. Just my own two cents - your experience may differ.

Pollster May 12th, 2000 10:06 AM

It's the kind of exchange between "Ilisa" and "Noah" on the "Don't Worry If I Disappear" thread that makes me keep my e-mail address underwraps. I don't want Noah knowing my real address!

SF Ghost May 12th, 2000 10:10 AM

I figure there are three types of people that post or read these messages. #1 People who genuinly want/need info on places that they are interested in visiting #2 people who want to pass along their expierences #3 jackasses who check the latest post and pop's off with some critical comments. It could be correcting grammer, insulting creative infosharing, ragging on cities and places they have never visited and getting into petty arguments that totally ignore the original request.

To those who dispense info to the original poster keep up the good work. If your honest and creative in giving people options then than more power to you. For those people (MAJORITY) who ask for info, get it and get off the net to take a trip using the info gathered no thanks nessesary. That's what it's all about.

#1 Kam
#2 John
#3 SF Sally

Pollster May 12th, 2000 10:20 AM

Thank you, San Francisco Ghost! I knew there must be someone out there besides me who'd like to give a pat on the back! I also think Kam is great, and Cheryl Z. People keep coming to mind!

ilisa May 12th, 2000 10:27 AM

Truthfully, Pollster, I considered not using my email address after receiving Noah's little missives. However, I've found that those types of emails are rare compared to the ones that truly want information.

no name 111 May 12th, 2000 11:07 AM

My thanks to Brian in Atlanta, neal sanders, Fay in Virginia, to name a few.

Pollster May 12th, 2000 11:12 AM

Thank you, No Name! Neal and Brian are two of my favorites, and I didn't remember them when I posted originally!

Brian in Atlanta May 12th, 2000 11:40 AM

There are too many posters I enjoy reading to list them here. But I'll mention the ones I've gotten the best info from:

Lisa in DC - turning us on to Cashion's Eat Place made our weekend.

John out West for info on Southern California

Brian Kilgore on the Canada forum - the forum's expert on Toronto - he was even nice enough to track us down at our hotel to respond to an e-mail we had sent him regarding restaurant recommendations.

Myriam in Belgium who's always willing to help out with info on her country.

I'm sure I'm missing many, but these were the ones I thought of immediately.

Brian in Atlanta May 12th, 2000 11:44 AM

Damn, I forgot Elaine on the Europe forum. Post a question on Paris and she's usually the first one there. Great trip notes too.

April May 12th, 2000 06:40 PM

Just a suggestion. I also don't like (to put it mildly) junk mail in with my emails. Therefore I use a Hotmail address for internet use so all the junk can go into the bulk mail bin which I routinely delete without reading. Using filters for certain words keeps some offensive messages out but not all. I'm sure other programs besides Hotmail work in the same way. So my Hotmail account gets the junk while my "real" email program which I use more often stays virtually garbage free.

karnak May 13th, 2000 12:54 AM

As someone above said "whose e-mail box has been filled with unsolicited travel newsletters, hotel ads, etc...since posting my real name and address on this forum?"....I found this to be oh so true!!! When I posted here with my real address I got tons of spam mail and I know it came from someone gathering addresses here. So now I post under any name or address that comes to me at the moment. I have posted in Fodor's under hundreds or more names now, rarely the same one more than once. I hardly ever ask questions but have often given informative answers when someone asks about a location I am familiar with. I don't care that I will never be acknowledged here as no one knows who I am....I give informative answers cause I like to help people when I can, not to get praise for it.

noname May 13th, 2000 05:16 AM

Right on Karnak (and all your other AKAs). You've spoken for a lot of us!

Pollster May 13th, 2000 05:34 AM

To Karnak, No Name, etc.:

OK, OK, OK, already! You don't like back-patting, and don't need thank-you's, and my idea obviously wasn't for everyone! But for those of us who feel a little differently, it wasn't a bad idea so BUZZ OFF and ignore what you don't want to participate in!

And have a good one!
Cheryl Z. May 13th, 2000 09:41 AM
Just wanted to say thank you Pollster, tho I fear I haven't been active much lately on any of the forums. And for my own favorite(s) - would have to start with Wes, Neal and just too many others to list, willing to share with fellow Fodorites.

unclemiltie May 13th, 2000 01:14 PM

I like [email protected] for his lame "I was in an airport and it happened to ME" joke under "SASS"

ying May 13th, 2000 02:04 PM

Pollster, the day everyone on this forum ignores something with which they disagree will be the day you-know-where freezes over. Just FYI, griping about those who disagree with you will only invite more to do so. If you don't like it, take your own advice and IGNORE it!!!

youhave May 13th, 2000 03:44 PM

Pollster, cool down. You remind me of the kid who takes his bat and ball away because he can't have his way! If anyone has an attitude problem, it's you.

wombat May 13th, 2000 04:42 PM

My favorite posters are those who can put tongue firmly in cheek and make me laugh out loud.

Posters I don't like are those who use phrases like "the best", flaunt jewelry/money/luggage, and brag about all the places they've dragged their small children.

amen
Noach May 13th, 2000 07:42 PM

To set the record straight, the "little missives" I sent to Ilisa were:

1. A perfectly polite and indeed friendly letter which I started with, "First of all, while I have taken offense to many of your posts, it may surprise you to learn that I do not hate you." I closed it by saying. "While I obviously vehemently disagree with many of your views, you nonetheless do not have to fear replying to this email, lest I personally insult you. As long as you do not personally insult me, I will respond in kind."

2. A copy of a thread from several months ago which I made reference to in the letter.

I am shocked at how low Ilisa has stooped by viciously insulting me in this way.
