White water in North Carolina

Moving to North Carolina this winter. Want to plan a white water rafting trip for this spring. Any recommendations? (Class IV and up)

Class IV and below ia all that they have (despite claims to the otherwise). But, they're still interesting runs, just not up to standards of the Frank Church River of No Return in Idaho. There's the Ocoee (really in Tennessee), the Nantahala and the Chatooga (really in Georgia). There may be a few others (and I may have misspelled these). Have fun.

I've been white water rafting several times on the Nantahala -- lots of fun, especially when the water's high. They do have some class IV but none higher than that as far as I know.

Hi Shawn,

There are several rafting centers in western NC and web search should find them. Also check ads in outdoors oriented magazines.

I think the Nantahala might get up to class IV during the spring runoff. Most outfitters located in Bryson City, NC. Have never seen a listing for class v or vi. I rafted the French Broad north of Asheville a few years ago at the end of summer and it was mild. Nothing like the Meryl Streep/Kevin Bacon movie from a few years back (I think it was call River Wild).

I'm not sure if it is open to the public, but the Atlanta Olympics white water rafting was on a man-improved to really difficult part of the Ocolee (Sp?).

Depending on where you move, you might be able to make an easy trip to West Virginia rafting.

Have fun.

The Ocoee water level is controlled by the TVA (I think). They release the water for rafting at certain times and days. The rest of the time, the river is very quiet. Check in the area for further details.
