Mariah Carey Christmas and NSYNC Christmas. Both are amazing. both are catchy and upbeat, they are really good xmas CDs.

AnnMarie_C Dec 14th, 2005 03:56 AM

Elendil--thanks for posting, I love choral music and will check out that cd. Also need to find a copy of the TSO everyone raves about :-)

Now about that Devo Christmas cd...are there poinsettias sticking out of the flower pots they wear on their heads?!? Those were flowers pots, right?!? "crack that whip!" :-D

zootsi Dec 14th, 2005 06:08 AM

I love most Christmas music, from the Drifters doing White Christmas, to the Boston Pops doing Sleighride. If I had to choose one 'most listenable' I guess it would have to be the Vince Guraldi Charlie Brown Christmas. I can listen to that year round!

elaine Dec 14th, 2005 06:14 AM

Ditto on George Winston's "December."

And re the Johnny Mathis Xmas CD--If "It's a Marshmallow World" isn't on yours, then you are missing a smiley classic.

I also enjoy Andy Williams's Xmas album from 100 years ago, I think his
"O Holy Night" is one of the best versions.

Catbert Dec 14th, 2005 06:33 AM

TSO is on Good Morning America today.

Barbara Dec 14th, 2005 06:39 AM

Another vote for George Winston's December.

Heavens, I can't stand Kenny G either!

bennnie Dec 14th, 2005 06:54 AM

This list is why I asked Santa for an Ipod (and a Longchamps black leather handbag but that's another thread).

Love the Irish Tenors Christmas cd - saw them in concert last winter and it was amazing.

All time favorite "new" Christmas song is Boney M's Mary Boy Child. All the essential elements of Christianity in such an upbeat song. Makes you want to sing along and get up and dance.

rubytwo Dec 14th, 2005 07:09 AM

Another vote for TSO (saw them live here a couple of years ago, great show too) and while this is not an album, I got out of a cab in Chicago in front of the Watertower a couple of years ago just before Christmas and a street group was singing "Silver Bells" and it was snowing big flakes and the Dickenensian carriages were stopped there..it was dark..so all the lights were lit and it was like a Christmas card view, magical and when I hear that tune I think of that lovely late afternoon on Michigan Ave.

JJ5 Dec 14th, 2005 07:20 AM

elaine, I'm going out these next few days sometime (regardless of snowstorms) to get a J. Mathis with "It's a Marshmellow World". Sounds a terrific addition. I have worn out one J.Mathis cd.

OldSouthernBelle Dec 14th, 2005 12:02 PM

Ok gang, I went and purchased the last three copies of TSO at Sam's today...Walmart came up empty. Am listening to it now. I kind of like it, but prefer the traditional Christmas music.

pdxgirl Dec 14th, 2005 04:10 PM

It's probably a tie between the Dean Martin christmas CD and the Frank Sinatra christmas CD. But then again I also love Nat King Cole and the Charlie Brown Christmas.

Budman Dec 14th, 2005 04:19 PM

Each time I browse this thread I keep singing over & over in my head: "Grandma got run over by a reindeer." ((a)) ((b))

emd Dec 14th, 2005 04:55 PM

OH NO BUDMAN! Now you've done it! I won't get that grandma out of my head for days.

SusanEva Dec 14th, 2005 05:50 PM

Hey Budman!

....as for me and Grandpa, we believe:)

Another vote for "December" - a favorite in our house.

offlady Dec 15th, 2005 12:13 AM

Adam Sandler's Happy Hannukah song. Yea, I know it's not a Christmas song but it is on a CD mix of Christmas songs we received. If you haven't heard it yet, it is hilarious.

eliztrav Dec 15th, 2005 05:28 AM

Leontyne Price's Christmas album.....among other things, she sings THE most beautiful O Holy Night I've ever heard.

Some of the old Firestone Christmas Albums are showing up now on CD, and have a great variety of good Christmas tunes....not just the commercial & PC stuff we hear publicly today that drives me nuts after too much of it!

kmpordagee Dec 15th, 2005 05:42 AM

Charlie Brown Christmas by the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

TravelTess Dec 15th, 2005 07:57 AM

I got a nice belly laugh when I read Kenny G - please....awful, awful.

George Winston's December is fabulous. The classics of Christmas can't be beat. Bring on Bing, Dean and the boys anytime.

bonniebroad Dec 15th, 2005 12:34 PM

My 8 year old granddaughter called me a couple of nights ago, and with great glee, sang "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer!" :-d So I reminded her that Grandma might STILL be shopping, and she might want to hush ... :p

razzledazzle Dec 15th, 2005 12:57 PM

Here's some lyrics I shamelessly "borrowed" from cyber space. Wish there was an album !
:))
"We three Kings of Leicester Square,
wearing ladies' underwear.
How fantastic, no elastic, only tuppence a pair.

We three Kings of Orient are,
One in a taxi, one in a car,
One on a scooter, tooting his tooter, smoking a wet cigar.

Oohhhhh, star of wonder, star of might,
star of dirty dynamite.
It was loaded; it exploded.
What a bang there was that night."
#-o
Well, at least it isn't Kenny G
((N))
or gansta rap !
:)>-

Apparently my 2 year old daughter feels this strongly about her "Strawberry Shortcake" Christmas CD. Not quite my idea of relaxing Christmas music, but it's cute to watch her sing and dance!

Maggi Dec 15th, 2005 05:04 PM

Bennnie, I so agree! I love it so much I'm having my choir sing it as the finale to our Christmas concert this year (I'm the director so they can't say no - but they love it too!) We'll have flashing palm trees and everyone will be wearing red leis. ((8))((h))((8)) Merry Christmas!

emd Dec 15th, 2005 05:15 PM

I did some Christmas shopping today and looked at the Christmas CDs. Saw TSO, lots of country, and bought THE classic Bing Crosby White Christmas CD. But there was this really weird one there - "Housewives on Prozac"...what is that about??

OldSouthernBelle Dec 16th, 2005 01:59 AM

emd: I've heard it's very calming...hehe!

Stephanie Dec 16th, 2005 02:41 AM

emd:

Couldn't agree with you more. Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth with Bing Crosby/David Bowie is the most meaningful song to me. I like when Gladys Knight sings "Peace on Earth" too. Surprising John Denver and The Muppets have some really enjoyable traditional and non-traditional Christmas songs. I was pleasantly surprised when I bought it a few years back.

Stephanie Dec 16th, 2005 02:45 AM

Another one or two just to chime in. When The Temptations sing "Silent Night." Also when Whitney Houston (she is the voice to me) sings "Do You Hear What I Hear". Wish there were a place where you could put together all the artists who sing certain Christmas songs very well.

emd Dec 16th, 2005 04:12 AM

Staphanie: My teenagers tell me that such a place is called "MP3"....(note that I used the generic name instead of the brand specific one that seems to corner the market)

AnnMarie_C Dec 16th, 2005 04:22 AM

emd, I believe the Housewives on Prozac cd is sung by the Monotones ;-)

offlady Dec 19th, 2005 11:01 AM

OK, now I'm curious. The Kenny G Christmas CD was in a comic strip yesterday (Sunday). It was included as one of 4 items that you did not want to receive for Christmas. I've never listened to the CD but now I may just go to my local Borders and check it out.

Maggi Dec 20th, 2005 08:16 AM

When Kenny G first appeared on the scene, people couldn't get enough of him. I saw him live at an outdoor venue and was blown away. He is a great musician with phenomenal breath control and a heavenly sound. I think he has gotten overexposed. I don't like that we build people up and when they get really popular, tear them down again (i.e. Celine Dion, etc.)

travlsolo2 Dec 20th, 2005 09:40 AM

Another vote for the Charlie Brown Christmas; and I just bought my husband an old Perry Como Christmas CD -- such a mellow voice.

Davethecat65 Dec 20th, 2005 10:33 AM

Several people mentioned Vince Guaraldi. The CD I play every year is Cyrus Chestnut's Charlie Brown Christas, which is a very loving tribute to both Vince and the Charlie Brown gang. Plus it's great music.

bonniebroad Dec 20th, 2005 11:31 AM

travlsolo2, I just bought an old Perry Como Christmas album, also, and had forgotten how smooth and terrific he was. My sister mentioned that he was her favorite of all time, which is what inspired me. It's been about about week since I started this thread ... and in that week, I've listened the most to Celine, but the Diana Krall album is growing on me, Brian Wilson's makes me smile ... and I'm getting ready to put on Kings College Boys Choir ... so beautiful! Esteban is also great, and I forget about his music. Happy listening, all!

kimamom Dec 22nd, 2005 10:05 AM

The concert Sunday night was amazing. The proceeds from the concert will go to the remodel of our local Metropolitan Museum. Kenny is obviously very good friends with the chairman head. (Golf buddies.)

We really enjoyed the concert. He is also a very warm, friendly person, loved it when he walked right out into the audience and played. Happy Holidays! ***kim*** ((f))

Bill_I Dec 22nd, 2005 10:31 AM

Heavens, I'm with you on Kenny G. & that is what the wife keeps playing over & over. But, sorry, Babs does not sit well with me either. They both give me headaches. Otherwise I listen to any & all other christmas albums. Chipmunks to Home Alone to the Cheiftains to Bing. The 1 I am listening to now, over & over is also called "December" but it is by the Moody Blues. That is followed by Bing, James Taylor, & Manheim Steamroller. Then if there is time, I sneak in a bit of the Nutcracker.

zootsi Dec 22nd, 2005 10:44 AM

Possibly my favorite 'traditional' christmas recording is the version of the Sussex carol playd at the opening scene of the 1984 version of 'A Christmas Carol' with George C Scott. Does anyone know if this is available on a cd?
For non traditional, Big Maybelle's r&b tinged version of White Christmas is amazing.

AnnMarie_C Dec 22nd, 2005 12:23 PM

Glad you enjoyed the concert, Kim--that was a great gift idea you had! :-)

rb_travelerxATyahoo Dec 22nd, 2005 12:39 PM

My vinyl copy is all worn out, but I just got the CD copy of the Rolling Stones "Beggers Banquet" and can't stop playing it.

I especially like "Sympathy for the Devil"

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game.
