Where's the best steak?

Steak aficionados out there---do you remember where you had the best steak that you've ever tasted...in your life?

Not surprisingly, we included Peter Luger, Bern's, and Morton's on a recent shortlist of favorite steakhouses. Just curious for your own picks...famous or not.

lizziea06 Mar 26th, 2008 01:33 PM

In my life, probably Morton's in Georgetown. Recent great steak, Gibson's in Chicago. The Gibson's mention is notable, because it was at a rehearsal dinner. The restaurant managed to serve 75 people INCREDIBLE steak, which is no small feat for any kitchen.

milemarker0 Mar 26th, 2008 01:53 PM

I'll second Gibson's Chicago, also La Forge Miami Beach and Tuscan Steakhouse Miami Beach.

The winner though: Ellis Island Casino Las Vegas....the $5.99 Steak Special (Not on the menu, have to ask for it...I think it's up to $7.99 now with free beer)

Silver Butter Knife Steak at Murray's in Minneapolis. :)

dherron Mar 26th, 2008 02:00 PM

Braxton's - Chicago. It beat the Morton's steaks I have had.

Mesa Grill in Las Vegas. We've dined at the Manhattan location and twice at the Las Vegas location. We prefer the Las Vegas restaurant.

Bobby Flay's Black Angus NY strip steak is heavenly. It is thick, tender, juicy, flavorful and the Mesa Grill steak sauce makes it perfect. Much, much better than Morton's or Ruth Chris IMHO.

Cabana Las Lilas, Buenos Aires

Denver has some great steakhouses, and my fave is Capital Grille. I know it's a chain, but the whole experience there was superb; the service top-notch and the food to die for. I love my red meat, and this dinner was a carnivore's dream!

beth_fitz Mar 26th, 2008 02:50 PM

A little local restaurant in Fremont CA called Essanay Cafe! I had a filet mignon there that melted in my mouth...mmm, mmm, mmmm!

Dana_M Mar 26th, 2008 03:27 PM

A few favorites come to mind:
-Mo’s in Indianapolis
-McKendrick’s in Atlanta
-Bern’s in Tampa
-The Forge in Miami. They also have to be the largest steaks I’ve ever seen. And no, I did not order the 3 pounder (or whatever it was) but somebody else in our group did!

I also recall two of my better carnivores meals being in Kansas City and Minneapolis, for the life of me I can't remember the names of the restaurants.

But the best steak I’ve ever had came right off the grill in my own backyard. But then, I’ve never been to Peter Luger.

The Capital Grille has a "Kona Crusted Dry Aged Sirloin" which is excellent. You don't really taste the coffee but the steak is delicious!

Here is the description from the menu:

A wonderful flavor combination with caramelized shallots, seasonings and coffee
rub to create a first-class steak many guests claim as their favorite.

The Palm.

My favorite steak place and the best steak i have ever tasted is the "Sliced edge of Rib steak" at new york prime in Boca. It is 3 large pieces of the marbly part of the rib-eye, the most delicious steak!

FlatFeat Mar 26th, 2008 03:40 PM

Off the grill at my house!

coldwar27 Mar 26th, 2008 03:50 PM

Bern's here in Tampa and also Charley's here in Tampa.

lindafromNJ Mar 26th, 2008 03:52 PM

Sparks in New York, Homestead in the Borgata in Atlantic City, Chop City Grill in Naples Florida. We have yet to go to Peter Lugar - we plan on doing that soon.

John Mar 26th, 2008 04:57 PM

Murray's in Minneapolis

LPCJr Mar 26th, 2008 05:05 PM

I would have to vote for Murray's. I am a big fan of the Capital Grille (there is location here in PHL), but Murray's is Old School - the real deal. Nothing fancy - just really, really great steak. I used to travel to the Twin Cities frequently for business, and no longer do. But, that place has been there so long that I don't doubt it will still be there if I ever get back.

Cut in Beverly Hills is our new favorite. It's one of Wolfgang Puck's restaurants that open in the spring of 06. My wife and I like it better than Luger's in NYC. Being a New Yorker, I feel that Luger's has become a bit overrated.

stumpworks73 Mar 27th, 2008 03:41 AM

Bob's in Dallas.
H3 in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

AAFrequentFlyer Mar 27th, 2008 04:02 AM

The original Gibson's in Chicago

Bern's in Tampa

Spark's in New York

La Chacra Buenos Aires

NeoPatrick Mar 27th, 2008 04:26 AM

I've eaten at the three mentioned by Katie in the original post, but none would be the BEST I've ever eaten, although all were "fun" places.

The Pine Club in Dayton, Ohio still remains one of my favorites of all times. I thought after many years' absence a return there a couple years ago might prove to be a disappointment, as often the experience doesn't live up to the memories, but not in this case. I sat and devoured that sirloin strip steak -- as good as they get.

mrsd2fan Mar 27th, 2008 04:43 AM

Longhorn Steakhouse-The Flo's Bleu..mmmmmmmmmmmm
Dinosaur BBQ also serves up a pretty good steak

Centralparkgirl Mar 27th, 2008 04:53 AM

I live in NY, so I've been going to Peter Luger's for over thirty years - only the original in Williamsburg though, not Long Island. Last week, I went to Wolfgang's in Tribeca - the steak was identical to Peter Luger. Wolfgang was head waiter at PL for many years and his son recently backed him in this venture - he has a 2nd restaurant on Park Ave S. I think I still prefer the PL atmosphere and German waiters.

Centralparkgirl Mar 27th, 2008 04:58 AM

Oh, and I finally got to eat at Babbo recently - they serve a steak for two - I tasted my friend's - it was sublime as was everything else that we ate.

NewbE Mar 27th, 2008 06:16 AM

Had the filet mignon of my life (wrapped in bacon) at a divey place outside San Angelo, TX; actually, it wasn't really divey, just simple. The owners of the adjacent cattle ranch ran it. If I remember the name, I'll post it, but it was 12 years ago, and the last steak I had, so... maybe not so helpful!

kansasmom Mar 27th, 2008 06:23 AM

Cattlemen's Steakhouse in Oklahoma City. Incredible!

nolefan1 Mar 27th, 2008 06:34 AM

#1 Bern's
#2 Delmonico's...Emeril's restaurant in Vegas

Katie_H Mar 27th, 2008 08:06 AM

NewBe... from a google search, I'm wondering if it's Lowake Steakhouse.

The full list of spots we mentioned is here by the way: http://www.fodors.com/news/story_2967.html

I haven't been to a proper steakhouse in awhile---probably the last time was before a Ranger's game at Nic & Stef's at MSG.

I did have a great steak about a year ago at a steakhouse in Northern New Jersey... would like to remember it's name...but cannot. Any New Jersey folks out there?

GrahamC Mar 27th, 2008 01:59 PM

1. The Hilton Steak house in Bangkok though, to be fair, it was kobe beef.
2. The Club Grill at the Sagamore Golf Course in upstate New York: the surroundings and view are pretty special too.
3. Billy Bob's Grill at Sam's Town in Las Vegas: three filet mignon with a variety of sauces - absolutely stunning and the cheapest of these three by a considerable margin!

Proenza_Preschooler Mar 27th, 2008 02:37 PM

Cabana Las Lilas in Buenos Aires!

The Argentines know how to do up a steak, don't they ekscrunchy?

Thingorjus

ekscrunchy Mar 27th, 2008 03:32 PM

They certainly do!! I loved that place! RW Apple of the NY Times wrote a story about 10 meals worth getting on a plane for and that was one of them..

Proenza_Preschooler Mar 27th, 2008 06:39 PM

I wrote a restaurant review of Cabana Las Lilas back in June/July 2004. It was posted on the South America forum.

I always recommend it to Fodorites traveling to Buenos Aires.

katie h,

you're probably thinking of the river palm terrace on river road in edgewater, nj.

it's very good but it's not peter lugers and neither are any of the others mentioned. i've been to most of the list. some are good, some are ok and some are just plain awful.

LindainOhio Mar 28th, 2008 12:22 PM

The steak lovers in our area all rave a restaurant here in Akron called the Diamond Grille--absolutely no atmosphere but everyone loves the steaks.

We eat there frequently. The restaurant closes down when the professional golfers come into town to play tournaments at Firestone--they open for just the golfers and their guests.

anna_roz Mar 28th, 2008 12:40 PM

O.K. It has been a few years and things change as we all know. But, the absolute best steak--hands down--can/could be had at the Regent Inn in Revelstoke, BC.

It's a long story but the best steak I've ever had was at a breakfast buffet at a Shoney's in Columbia, S.C. Nothing will ever compare.
