Where's the best kosher corned beef?

I used to live in a northern suburb of Chicago? I've been craving a great kosher corned beef sandwich on Rosens rye.

Anywhere in Skokie, Illinois. How about the pickles?

Le Habitant Aug 9th, 2002 09:34 AM

Schwartz' in Montreal on St. Laurent Ave is the best corned beef sandwich anywhere, bar none.

YO try Katz's Deli in NYC

Nikki Aug 9th, 2002 09:37 AM

Ummmmm - you're making my mouth water for a corned beef on rye or a pastrami on pumpernickel from Carnegie's deli (NYC) Jack's in Baltimore used to have a great one too.

Dick Aug 9th, 2002 09:46 AM

Nikki,

You ar right, Jack's USED to..but not anymore.

The same with Attman's in Balto.

Skip Carnegie Deli and go straight to Second Avenue Deli!

Jason Aug 9th, 2002 09:54 AM

Katz's deli, followed by 2nd Avenue deli, followed by Carnegie Deli.

xxx Aug 9th, 2002 09:58 AM

Jason, no no no. It is Second Avenue Deli, followed by Katz's and Carnegie is not even on the list as the aren't Kosher. Neither is Stage.

yyy Aug 9th, 2002 10:07 AM

actually, xxx, neither is Katz's (kosher, that is...)

Micheal's Deli, Harvard St, Brookline MA

Nikki Aug 9th, 2002 10:17 AM

okay so when I come to NY where do I go to get to 2nd ave deli?

Sorry guys - I'm from DC - need the directions

Dick Aug 9th, 2002 10:22 AM

Leah,

Is Michaels REALLY that good? Do the sell CB by the pound or just sandwiches.
Do you know if it's kosher or not.

I'll be in Brookline in a couple of weeks and will check it out.

Thanks

ILive Aug 9th, 2002 10:23 AM

Nikki, 2nd Av deli is 2nd av at 10th st. Take the 4/5 train to 14th st/Union sq, or 6 to Astor Place or R/N to 8th St.

leahj Aug 9th, 2002 10:36 AM

Dick-

Michaels is new and are trying to build business so thier CB is excellent! 99.9% it is kosher.

If you're going to be in Brookline, then without a doubt check out Zaftig's on Harvard Street in Coolidge Corner. THeir CB is outstanding and IS kosher.

Enjoy!

xxx Aug 9th, 2002 10:37 AM

Can't believe a place called Micheals Deli would be kosher.

leahj Aug 9th, 2002 10:45 AM

xxx- Why can't you believe a place named Micheal's can't be kosher??

Brookline MA is a very diverse community serving many ethnic populations. The restaurants serve what the community wants and enjoys...

xxx Aug 9th, 2002 10:49 AM

With the exception of Katz's, I would say that the best deli is not-kosher meat, the restaurant is merely "kosher style" in that they serve typically Jewish food. I would say that the best corned beef/pastrami in NYC is the Carnegie, and even better than that is Schwartz's in Montreal.

Dick Aug 9th, 2002 10:50 AM

Leah,

Thanks for the tip. I'll be visiting family in Brookline and make sure we check it out.

Just curious, does anyone out there remember the original Jack & Marion's on Harvard St.?

Dick Aug 9th, 2002 10:53 AM

xxx,

There really is no such thing as "kosher style". That's like saying vegetarian style.
It's either kosher or it's not.

But you are right, many places make meats and call them "kosher style".
