Where to stay in San Francisco

Hi guys,

I'm heading out to the SF GTG in a couple of weeks and I need ideas for where to stay. I'm a female who will be traveling alone so safety is a primary concern, but I don't want to sell a body part to pay my hotel bill either. I'm thinking of doing a priceline bid so what is the best zone?

Thanks a mil, and I'll see some of you at the GTG. :-)

I don't know the priceline zones, but I'm comfortable staying around Union Square.

I haven't tried staying there (yet) but I also really like Embarcadero area.

Thanks Suze.

Do you know anything about the Maxwell Hotel? It's in Union Square and it seems reasonably priced.

O.K. Could not resist a pitch for my all-time favorite Chancellor Hotel in Union Square. Wish I was going..

Thanks anna roz. It looks very nice but the Chancellor has no availability for my dates.

The location is good. Didn't know much at the Hotel until I looked it up. Appears it is going through a renovation so it can be noisy. But I stayed at the JW Marriott when it was having a renovation and didn't have a problem.

On the Hotel website, it said there were no rooms but on cheaptickets.com there were some. I think it's a great rate for the Union Square area.

When are you getting into town? I am coming from So. Cal around noon on Friday and don't really have any plans until dinner. So maybe we can meet up if you are getting in earlier. Also don't what you have planned for Sat but I think there will be some of us there for the day.

If you want to email me it's [email protected]

I think Patrick said there were a bunch of conventions so rooms were hard to come by for that weekend.

P_M Oct 10th, 2008 05:08 PM

Hi Paula,

If all goes on schedule I'll arrive into SFO at 10:03 on 10/24. I would love some company on Friday afternoon or Saturday. I was wondering if a convention was in town, since rooms do seem a little scarce.

I'll send you an email now.

PS
Suze, get your buns down to SF too, OK? :-D

I haven't stayed at the Maxwell P_M, though I know the location (I eat at Max's cafe downstairs). I have walked on that part of Geary alone at night (maybe 11 ish) on a weekend night, and have felt comfortable. I noticed when I was looking for my recent stay it was well rated for the price.

I had a car (with GPS) but the Hayes Valley Inn was very European with an amazing breakfast. Under $100. Almost all the guests were French and German. I would do it again and take a Cab to the GTG.http://www.hayesvalleyinn.com/

Hi P_M-

For Priceline, you can try Union Sq East or Union Sq West zones. My mom and I were in SF over Labor Day w/e and we won the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero thru PL (Union Sq E). Stick with 4* only.

Thanks yk, good info as always and I will try priceline first.

johnthedorf, Hayes Valley is quite reasonable and I will definitely consider it if I don't get a good priceline bid. I have a few questions. I am a woman traveling alone so what did you think of the neighborhood? I will not have a car so how close is it to public transportation? Thanks.

P_M Oct 11th, 2008 08:09 AM

I'm trying to get a priceline bid and so far no luck with those zones yk mentioned. How about the Fisherman's Wharf area? Is that good?

Also I've tried to raise my bid but they won't allow it unless I enter more zones.

UPDATE:

I appreciate all help and suggestions but priceline just didn't work for me this time, probably because several conventions are in town.

But good news: Club Quarters offers a nice discount for state workers, so that's where I'll be staying.

Thanks again all!!

Hi P_M, read Kodi's TR entitled "We had a great time in California, thanks everyone". She gave good comments regarding the Club Quarters.

P_M Oct 11th, 2008 10:16 AM

Thank you LoveItaly. I just read it and it contains a lot of good info. :-)

More information for you....
We are 2 women, and felt safe in the area. But we aren't ones to go out late at night though.
But during the day, we were able to walk to many areas. ...The Ferry Building was very close.. ChinaTown,
Union Square.
I would gladly stay in the area again. We were close to the tram line that went to Fishermans' Wharf.

There is a pub style restaurant attached to the hotel. We weren't very impressed with the food.

The staff at the hotel were really friendly and helpful. They arranged our shuttle back to the airport.

Have a great time.

Thanks for all the info kodi. I'm already looking at web pages for the movie tour and Beach Blanket Babylon, as per your other thread.

LoveItaly Oct 11th, 2008 11:08 AM

Hi P_M, I without thinking posted about the MonaLisa for you on Kodi's thread..so click on her thread again. Guess I did't know which thread I was on.

Quite all right LoveItaly. :-)
